Tee Martin (notes and summarized quotes)

Watching Jim Chaney, you've got to respect him. Ansley has done a great job he knows the system. Looking forward to everyone working together.

It's time to go We've had a good off season, if you look at the player's bodies. Marquez is up in my office right now ready to go and that's exciting.

We will lean on our experienced seniors but the best guys will play. Our identity will be tough and physical, not beat ourselves and make plays.

The guy who I was really excited about is Josh Palmer, he had a really good spring. Jordan Murphy had a really good spring. Ramel is coming, he has the talent and is really smart, but he hasn't played yet. I like how Josh and Jordan have performed.

Jarrett has a built in chemistry and leadership. It's a new system and once he plays games in the system you'll see the true potential, but the leadership qualities and the chemistry, those things you can't underestimate.

Josh Pamler in the all scrimmages he's the guy that stepped up and made big plays and that's what we're going to need.

I want to play as many guys as we can. To me it's about quality of reps not quantity.

Marquez has a skill set that's very similar to a JuJu Smith-Schuster, who was very intelligent, did everything on special teams, did everything on offense, can play inside or outside, will play hurt. I didn't know Marquez but he's always eager to jump in and do whatever you ask him to do and he loves the game. This is is last year. He ran a 4.4 flat in the summer so he's gotten faster since a season ago. I challenged all of our guys to get faster and they've all had better times. Marquez has the potential to be one of the better receivers in the league and I'm not just saying that because he's at Tennessee. His body of work speaks for itself. If he just continues to take his game to the next level he could be one of those early round guys.

I want Jennings to lead by example in a positive way and he's turned the corner. In the spring he went from a guy who talked about put me in, let me play --- he want's the ball and that's good, but he was really emotional at times. But to watch him grow and toward the end of the spring towards understanding his role. He's one of our best guys and we have to get him the ball. But the positive attitude, he took Ramel under his wing this summer. He has changed for the positive. He cut his hair and is looking like a young man again. He's listening to the things we are asking him to do. It's his last year and I think he understands the importance of him having a good year.

The thing I ask our veteran guys to do is buy in and lead by example in a positive way.

Impressions so far of Jerrod Means? Fast. 4.4 flat. Strong. And very intelligent. He picked it up pretty quickly. We weren't around as coaches, but to hear about it from veterans coming up telling you about the young guys, you know you have something special.

Marquez and Jerrod both run 4.4 flat?

But...but that’s impossible bc the Negavols said we don’t have any speed. How can this be?
It tells me that the players are actually putting in the time and effort to get better. Just looking at the difference in the size of our guys from last year to now tells me that they have bought in and are ready to take the next step

Most of the guys saying UT doesn't have speed at WR and they don't get any separation are the guys that think JG did no wrong last year. It was all the other 10 players on the field that didn't do what they should have done. I will say again like I have repeatedly. I hope JG proves me wrong and will gladly eat crow. I think JG will be improved and the entire team around him will be. If JG ends up being an ELITE QB like many on this board thinks he is, UT should win 9 regular season games this year!!!

No, our not having fast WRs that couldn’t get separation downfield last year was a fact. JJ is a 4.65-4.75 guy maybe, Callaway ain’t a burner (I know Tee said he’s run 4.4 this summer, but at NO point in his career thus far has he resembled a guy who runs 4.4), neither is Brandon Johnson. Palmer seems to be the fastest of the 3 for sure, but rarely ran past anybody either. So, we played to our guys strengths which was to throw back shoulder and 50/50 balls because our guys are physical and very good at high pointing the ball and winning those battles. 50/50 balls for our guys last year were more like 60/40 balls.

And nobody is saying JG did no wrong last year. He was far from perfect and needs to improve in getting the ball out a little quicker and “throwing guys open” with more consistency. Those of us who defend him do so against guys who say he sucks, can’t read defenses, can’t do this, can’t do that, blah blah blah, and blame him for everything. JG, on balance last year, was one of our best, most consistent players and was not the reason the team sucked....he needs to get better, but he was much better than most of our players at the others positions on the team.

Please don't turn this into a JG thread...

Back to WRs.

Callaway has absolutely looked 4.4 on punt returns. Means is a physical freak, but will he be a dog??

All around the WR group has good ability. Good veterans. Yeah let's throw to set up the run.

I like that Tee tossed a positive out to the media about JJ. He's had issues keeping his emotions in check it seems. But it sounds like they've gotten his attention and he's doing what they ask in a leadership role.

TEE: I won at the highest level and went undefeated here son. Listen to me.

Love how our new group of coaches don’t sugar coat it..They give the good and bad.”Hey JJ screwed up he knows it,but he’s turned it around”and proceeds to shoot the positives.I love the positive while also keeping it real it’s a fresh perspective if u ask me.

No. You all pretty much do what the guy says. You don't mind throwing blanket criticisms and blame on other players and groups... but cannot even consider that the "separation" issues might have something to do with JG not throwing on time and leading receivers away from coverage.

I agree with your Juan Jennings point of view but Callaway can absolutely fly as far as top end speed goes. And Palmer is prob the fastest of the group. Many of negative saying we don't have speed are prob referencing that they don't have quickness in the receiving core...where they can take a slant pattern to the endzone type player

I thot what he said was very accurate on several different points. This, not nearly as much. JMO

Yeah, you know more than Tee. Give us all a break and stop making freaking excuses for JG's inadequacies. Enough already! We all know there are several of you out there that constantly defend JG to the end and make it all other player's faults.

Coach,
Thanks for coming home and coaching up players on our current roster. Now go and do what you do best which is recruiting the next generation of VFL's in the form of 4 and 5 * SEC caliber players!

Once pad and helmets come on they lose about 0.6 speed.

All you say is true but the biggest reason JG had such a ****** year is not because he lacked talent but because he had precious little time to throw the ball on the money. the kid got bounced around like a rubber ball. Hopefully this year he will have improved his throwing time and all around ability and will have time to make the plays we hope he can make. Grandpa
