Tear jerker moments

I believe his name is Andrew Haag. I had the honor of being in a Golf class with him this past semester and he is a great guy. Very high spirited and doesn't let his physical disability hold him back.

Yep. That's him. Last name is Haag, I just couldn't remember the 1st name.

Kenny Chesney song, "Thank you John Ward." I miss listening to that old man!

I can hear him now.... "Jeff Powell just comes ROARING down the field."

"Bang" "It's Gooo-dah" "Touchdown Big Orange in the Super Dome"

"Henry just darting, dashing and diving into the endzone"

"There's no way to describe it, there is just no way to describe it..... Just rack up six and give it to Holloway"

"Your national champions are clad in Big Orange."

In 1998 I was at the Arkansas game with my a friend of mine from high school. My dad and I had season tickets two rows below the V in the vols sign. This particular Saturday, my dad went to sit with my friends dad and I sat with my friend. I promise at 15 years, I said every curse word in the world on UT's last offensive outing prior to the stoner fumble. I also assure you, that every blue hair in the place stared me down as though I was Damion born on 6/6/66. My friend joined me in my rant, he was as all vol as all vol can be. After the stumble and fumble, we were ecstatic and full of jubilation, and the final touchdown was a huge life experience.

In December 2004, my friend from the game, Daniel Harrison was killed in action in Iraq. He was riding in a Humvee positioned at the 50 Cal. machine gun stationed on top of the vehicle. The Humvee hit a bump in the road/sand, and Daniel dropped down in the all purpose vehicle. When he pulled himself up, an enemy bullet went through his armpit and straight into his heart, as it is the only place that is not covered by a chest protector.

As we all know, the Vols sign was takin away and the jumbo tron was put up after the 98 season. In 2005, during the Memphis game, the jumbo tron showed a picture of Daniel on top of a Humvee during his time from Iraq. His picture was just above where we sat for that game. I was still young at that time, I kept my sunglasses on, as I cried. I have never been sadder at a UT game. I wish I could say a lose to UF or Bamma was my saddest moment; however, a victory over a nobody like Memphis was the saddest UT moment in my life. I really doubt it will ever be matched.

Being a military man myself, currently in Afghanistan that made me tear up right here tonight.
UT fan my entire 36 years and i took my wife of 15 years to her first game agaisnt Vandy when Wes Brown scored. She had so much fun and now realizes why i love UT football so much, that made me cry. Can't wait to get home and hopefully find my way to Ktown sometime in November for a game. GOD Bless the Big Orange. Touchdown Tennessee gets me everytime. Also teh first time my son sang Rockytop. He was 4 and sang it standing on the Gator Statue in Gainesville, it was amazing people were amazed, such passion he sang it with that day

Watching my parents jumping up and down, at my aunts house, screaming to the top of their lungs, "IT'S GOING LEFFFFFFFT!" During the 98 Fla game.

And, every single time the "T" Opens, and the crowd comes alive, which, reminds me of a Ward quote, that brings tears to my eyes...

"And as the crowd begins to roar, and roar, and roar, to the deafening cheers of 95,000 screaming fans. The Volunteers coming out to the gate in Orange and White. The crowd comes alive, the Volunteers are ready! It's time, ladies and gentlemen, It's FOOTBALL TIME, IN TENNESSEE!"

God I miss that man! Honestly, Tennessee football has not been the same since his departure! No offense to Kessling but when Ward retired a part of the Tennessee football experience was lost forever.

Not sure how many here are old enough to remember but the 1985 season was one of the most magical and emotional for me.

Not because of the loss of a friend but in a sports sense after Robinson went down during the Bama game and the way the team came together that last quarter on the road to beat Bama and go on to win the SEC and the Sugar Bowl was just as special as the NC to me.

If you watch the Sugar Vols CD and the lockerroom after words and you see Dale Jones tearing up.

Also after the 1995 Bama game.

This can't be repeated enough...I grew up listening to Ward. He is what I remember more than anything else about my childhood in regards to Tennessee football.

I've cried during the CBS/SEC intro theme before...Only time I've cried due to a game result though was the '05 bama loss. That game made me reconsider the way I handle defeat in life...That's right, life lessons in SEC football.

The only time I really cried was after the Orange Bowl in 68/69 when we lost to OU. We were down pretty big and came back and had a chance to win at the end and Karl Kremser missed the field goal. I was like 12 years old and cried for 30 minutes. I thought my parents were going to take me to a child psychiatrist after that.

When T-Blow came back
Blowing the SEC Championship against LSU
Every year we lose to Bama
Joyful tears when I hear a new Dooleyism

And losing to UNC and have to hear it for the rest of my natural born life.

I started going to Tennessee football games in 1984. We had just moved to Knoxville from Atlanta and my dad's company had season tickets and an assigned parking space right across from the stadium. My dad and l loved football and UT was paradise to us and we really bonded tailgating and going to the games together. I went to UT from 1985-1987.

In 1997 my dad went into the hospital with stage 4 bone marrow cancer. He spent most of the Summer in the hospital and on Saturday, August 30 my brothers and I snuck a cooler of beer into his hospital room and watched the UT vs. Texas Tech game. UT won big. My dad passed away the next day (same day as Princess Diana, he always liked blondes). Every year when I watch a UT game I think about my dad and how much he loved going to UT games and that last game we watched together.

Wow, truly a great story. Sorry for your lose.

My 84 year old father passed away about a month ago. He was the biggest Big Orange fan I knew. He was born in Knoxville...went to Knoxville High and attended UT. He got me started on UT football in the mid to late 60's as a small child. Thru him I grew to love the Vols. We attended several home and a few away games through the years. As he got older and his health started failing we would watch the games together every Saturday and when we couldn't we would call eachother several times during the games.

In 1998 when the Vols won the BCS Championship he had just gotten out of the hospital from having bypass surgery...that was an awesome night for us.

Oh yea...that same year...at 70 years old my father who was pretty much anti-tattoo (I have a couple from when I was in the Marines)...went out and got a 'Power T' put on his calf. :eek:lol:

Yep...this is going to be a weird season for me.

Go Vols !!

Thanks for sharing that story. I lost my father to cancer last year and Tennessee football was one of the things that he and I shared such a special bond with. I cannot even begin to count how many games we watched together, how many we listened to on the radio, and how many "round table" discussions we had about UT when I was growing up and into my adult years. My Dad loved UT and is the single biggest reason why I'm such a fan today. Now that's gone forever and even though I'm still a huge UT fan, it's honestly not as enjoyable without my Dad.

The painfully ironic thing is my first son was born last year as well (my Dad never got to see him). I can only hope that I can pass down that same bond to him that my Dad did with me.

One of the biggest regrets I have for my children is that they will never be able to experience UT football listening to John Ward.

There will be other things we can share together, hopefully many many UT wins but it truly was a special time growing up and listening to John Ward call the games.

Every year without fail once the fall weather starts to turn cooler and the leaves turn and start to fall I can't help but get a bit misty eyed because I think back to when I was a kid. Before every single game was on some TV station somewhere and UT was only on TV maybe twice a year. Back then you HAD to watch the coaches show if you wanted to see the game and the highlights. A cool crisp fall day in the mid 50's with the son shining bright just about gets me everytime.
