Tariq's dad explains his departure.

Wasn't referring to you or really anyone in this thread particularly. Only one post so far came off a little sour, but if you're a regular around here and read transfer posts regularly you'll know what I'm talking about. Just didn't want to see that in this thread as it's obvious Mr. Owens is a very classy man, who didn't even owe us an explanation. Other threads regarding his son haven't been quite as kind as Mr. Owens briefly touched on.

As far as productivity, this kid was a true freshman that just lacked size and strength to be able to really contribute this season. Down the road he could have been an impact player, but bottom line is, this program has been VERY unstable since Coach Pearl left, and there's no guarantee that Coach Barnes and Tariq will be a good match. Relationships between players/coaches are very important as I previously mentioned.

I didn't mean to offend anyone on my previous post. Just hoping that some "not so considerate" members didn't make it over to this thread and be disrespectful to a players father who exhibited lots of class in this thread.

Edit- judging by the amount of posts you have on this forum, I think you can relate to what I was saying about a lot of the transfer threads. Some people are just rude, uneducated, and quick to judge anytime a kid leaves.

So it was a preemptive rant?

He's transferring.....the why doesn't really matter. Sooner or later the kid needs to stand his ground and take what he wants. No longer a vol....no longer concerned or interested.

How compassionate. I imagine the Owens family could not care less about your concern or interest in their son's future.

I still don't get him leaving.

1) any coach can promise playing time. They don't have to honor it.
2) Tariq is in a much worse situation now than he would have been if he stayed......unless
3) someone had already been taking to someone....

P.S. This is why you play for the school. Obviously this relationship with DT was one sided as he lied his ass off to both of you about his trouble. If you think DT didn't know this was coming.... I don't know what to say.

Can't make it any plainer than this to which Mr. Owens agreed 100%. "Don't you remember that Tariq felt no better coming out of his interview with Barnes than he did going in? That was a big problem in his first exposure to the new coach. Also his dad said he should have red shirted this year. With a transfer he can have a year to grow and mature that he would not have if he stayed. Smart decision and he will be a baller!"

Yeah, I guess it's tough when the new coach won't look you in the eye and tell you that you will play 30 minutes a game and that those recruiting violations will go away. If he is looking for someone to make him feel good, he needs to grow up some.

Maybe I am confused. Why could he not stay at UT and redshirt next season if Barnes overrecruited him? Don't understand either why some of you have to dis the kids because they respectfully transfer? Some of you are more immature than the young kids!

I'm not dissing the kid. I am simply wondering what he is looking for. As many posts as his dad is making in reply makes it look like they have been told something by another coach that "looks" better. I hope he finds what he is looking for, not sure that it isn't with Coach Barnes.

"Owens didn’t tell Barnes he and his family thought it would be better for him to transfer. They called a Tennessee administrator and sent the request through him. Whether everyone believes Owens himself wanted to leave is another matter, but that was certainly the desire of his family."

If true, that's garbage. Can't even tell the coach face to face? Additionally, sounds like pops may be doing what's best for him, not what's best for or preferred by his son.

Disclaimer: I have no idea where the post I quoted came from, so completely disregard my response if the quote is bogus.

Enough already people. Most of this is just speculation except what we got from Tariq's dad. Whatever the case, it is Tariq's prerogative to choose to do what is best for him. It is not ours to question. Can we please move on from this? It is not the end of the world nor is it the end of Vol Basketball. Get over it! Let it Go!

You had it right in your first post. Sounds like T's dad is driving the scholly wagon. The thread is about the decision, not about the end of TN basketball. That's for the B-ball regular posters thread.

Many thanks to you, Tariq, and to your dad and the rest of your family for sharing a year of your life with us here on Rocky Top!! With a 10 man roster, you were critical throughout the season in allowing us to win 16 games and come very close to winning some more. Without your input, it could have been much worse. That grinding practice schedule and being one of 10 were very important to this basketball team. I know that you have learned a lot this year that will help you in the future on the basketball court. Wishing you success in your basketball and educational endeavors! Hope you always remember the mountains of East Tennessee and hope we meet again in the NCAA tourney.

We wasn't told anything by another coach. I do not believe Tariq can redshirt unless he is injured being that he did not redshirt as a freshman. That option is not an option now. In reference to what you are referring to. Durning the recruitment process a relationship his formed. You are in contact a lot with the coaches you go on visits. From personal experience It's hard after someone looks in th face shakes your hand to go back on the things you discuss. Playing time is not a concern Tariq can earn that by working hard and developing into the player I know he can be. This is what's important to me from a coach that you watch over my son, that you hold him accountable, you teach what it means to be a man away from home and that your staff have some of the same core principals I have and taught my son. If my son pick that phone up and needed any of those coaches for whatever reason I can rest knowing they will come to his aid and support him until I get there. Last but not least see that he is not just eligible but getting his education in not just a degree that's not going to be worth the paper it's printed on. For him to have a real major not basket weaving. Not that I have anything against basket weaving. CDT ran into some problems but I know personally they were some good coaches and men on that staff. Sometimes good people make a bad judgement call and it cost them. Coach Barnes comes with a great resume We just don't think its was a good fit for Tariq going forward. I found that out after the one on one meeting.

Everyone has 5 years to play 4. A student-athlete can take a redshirt at any point during the first 4 years.

Volnation is so passionate and I truly love and respect you guys. Ive enjoyed this journey over this past year. Tariq has received his release to transfer today. He has some schools interested if you care to know here it is St John's, George Washington, UCLA, Louisville, NC State, Maryland, Illionois State, a few Big 10 schools. Some SEC Schools were interested but I'm to found of the VOLS to want to go against you guys. Plus found out today they restricted us we can not transfer to a SEC school. Most likely once Tariq finish out this semester we will narrow things down and see whats the best fit for him and take a few visits and decide. Thanks again for the well wishes and GO VOLS I mean that.

That's a new one on me didn't know that

Yeah, if a player sits out the one year after a transfer, most schools will use the redshirt for that season if it's still available.

Good luck to you and your family.

Peace.

Correct. So if Owens had stayed here at Tennessee, Owens could still have redshirted for the year, and if he didn't like it here (Tennessee), he would be eligible immediately because he had already sat out a year due to redshirt he would take this year. You have 5 years to play 4.

I don't think that's correct. If Tariq were to stay this year at UT and take his red-shirt then decide to transfer he would still have to sit out a year at the new school unless he transferred down (which is pretty far down for basketball). In that scenario he would burn his red-shirt and a year of eligibility at the other end and it would be 2 full years without playing in a competitive game.
