Syracuse thinks it has a chance

I am a long time lurker new poster, my wife was originally from Central NY and wanted to move back, we now live in the suburbs of Syracuse, Life long Vols fan. This Syracuse team is filled with unknowns, I believe they will be strong on at WR, RB, O line and ok in the Secondary . Weak at D line, and Linebacker, and kicker. Tennessee should be able to run the ball all day long. I think it will be close in the first half, then we just beat them down. 31- 13 Vols.

“Be careful because a backup QB for Notre Dame is playing for Syracuse now.”

I didn’t think Notre Dame was better than TN last year with both teams healthy. They only got past Georgia because Beck was out with injury. It’s crazy what an easy SOS schedule will do for a team’s health.
ND pass game sucked so if he could throw it they probably would have given him a few snaps considering their starter was basically an RB. We dont have to be better than ND we just need to be better than Syracuse on opening day.

I think we are worse at receiver. Thornton, Bru, and Squirrel did not amass some huge amount of yards, but the same people saying we improved there would have been pissed a year ago if you told them what the passing game was gonna look like last year. Given their inability to stay healthy in the offseason or to catch balls in routes against air, I am concerned with that position.

We are worse at running back. We had the SEC POY last year who broke all our single season rushing records. That will be an downgrade. People can poo poo losing Sampson all they want, but we will be worse there. I think we will be fine at running back, but if we were merely fine at running back last year, we probably go 7-5.

We could very possibly be worse at O Line. Sanders is a true freshmen. We have had some tackles who went on to be great who were not good as true freshmen. Pendleton couldn’t start at ND when they were healthy and may not be the best fit at center. I’ll have to see Jesse Perry actually do it before I am convinced he is some stud. Same with Heard really, he wasn’t good at all last year. I do believe Moe will be very good for us though, so that’s a plus.

Quarterback could be worse too. I was not a believer in Nico from the moment he ran out of bounds against Arkansas. He wasn’t good. But Aguilar is far from proven at this level, and Heupel’s track record here with QBs he recruited has been bad. Halzle’s track record as an OC isn’t good. So it’s a huge question mark.

The offense could possibly better, but when you have so many question marks, I doubt you get answers that you like at every position. And we need to like the answers we get at every position for the offense to improve.

Hahahahaha

We will be better at Oline. Our Oline graded out 105th out of ~135FBS schools last year.

We will be better at WR. We had a ridiculous amount of drops last year. Also had injuries. Our best pass catcher last year by far was Kitselman at TE.

We will be better at QB. At least a little. Nico missed wide open TDs regularly and ONLY threw for 5TD passes vs SEC teams
Not named Vandy in 7 games. FIVE TDS IN SEVEN GAMES VS SEC.

We will split the carries among several RBs but i will not be at all surprised to lead the SEC in rushing for the 3rd straight year in 2025.

We will be better at LB. Same 2 starters with a full year more experience plus Spillman and Burns as experienced backups. Also Harmon and Perlotte as freshmen.

As usual you are dead wrong about the VOLS. As much as you gripe, question, and cry about UT I have no idea why you allegedly are a fan. Seems like you would find another team that you think actually knows what they're doing? GO VOLS

Our O Line were finalists for the Joe Moore Award. Blocked for the all time leading rusher in school history. But sure, it was one of the worst in the country.

I find it funny that you are convinced that the receivers will improve because they got hurt and dropped the ball last year, since they have been hurt and dropped the ball all camp long.

The Nico bar is not a high bar to pass, he wasn’t good. But Aguilar is no given to be better.

I said running back will be fine but worse than when we had the record setter last year. That just stands to reason unless you think Star Thomas is better than Dylan Sampson, which you would have been outraged about 8 months ago.

Linebacker may be better than it was to end last season, but I doubt it will be as good as it was before Pili got hurt. To call Spillman and Burns “experienced backups” makes it look like you have no idea what the word “experienced” means.

I’ve forgotten more about Tennessee football from before I was born than you have ever known about Tennessee football during your lifetime. Only a simpleton thinks the way you do, it would be like saying someone hates America because they don’t think every single member of Congress is a wonderful statesman.

I think Fran Brown is a good coach and he will scheme some surprises that may hit on a few plays. But I think the talent discrepancy will be apparent especially along the lines. TN brings a lot of experience and athleticism on the DLine and will test Cuse’s Oline from the get go. Angeli will have to make quick decisions and be accurate. WR is an issue for Cuse as well and will be a tough matchup even with McCoy not playing.
Our secondary is as deep as it's ever been under Heup even with McCoy out of the lineup. You combine that with a great D-line and it spells bad news Angeli. He's not a runner either. He better have his head on a swivel.

Bro, this OL let Nico get sacked 28 times...28 F'ing times! That says all you need to know about how bad they were at pass blocking and how bad Nico was at avoiding sacks. We will absolutely be better at both

I don't think they are better than those 5 SEC teams. If so, UT better come to play and limit mistakes. I say UT wins 34-13! UT's D is going to be great again!!! The only reason I am saying they get a TD is becuase it may be likely for UT to turn the ball over in it's own territory being game 1 or the D gives up a big play on a missed assignment. Other than those two possibilities, the D is going to play great!!!

I personally think Tennessee will win soundly as well but we will see. It is never easy to break in a new offense against a legit opponent.

We should win. It’s college football . . . And we have unknowns at QB and WR. Syracuse probably won’t be able to stop the run . . . But turnovers could keep it close.

I've seen Wyoming, 11 Kentucky, Georgia State, SC take destroy one of the best teams in UT history, 05 Vandy, 96 Memphis, anyone can win over anyone. If there were not confident they should their program down.
Ehhh, I know what you mean, not to mention ‘75 N. Texas State. We used to play a proper schedule with Maryland, UCLA, Auburn, LSU, Bama, N. Texas State, Colorado State, Ole Miss, UK and Vandy. We went 6-5 and went to Hawaii to play the Rainbow Warriors in early Dec. to finish 7-5.
If you are over 50, you recall these fantastic intersectional games and schedules.
The banners waved throughout Aloha Stadium that evening , “The Battle is over, we need a Majors change”
I was a youngster but anyone around who made that trip out to the islands recalls a crazy good time. The flight alone was worth it, flying with the team and a bunch of Volunteers!
Edit; to this day that was the absolute longest airplane I’ve ever been on. Some kind of super stretch is all I can recall.

maybe 2024 Syracuse

hell they lost more than we did but it never gets mentioned
Yep. Syracuse had 18 Starters back last year! Plus a Senior QB Transfer from Ohio St. So 10 starters on offense Plus a better QB! No wonder they won 10. This year, 2 starters on offense, 6 on defense. Big difference. Vols should win and cover the 14.

Vols defense plays nasty. Vols offense leans on the run. JA hits a couple of deep balls. TE's and RB's grab a few.

Syracuse does enough to keep it respectable, but I like what Vegas thinks.

Angeli will be sore after this one.

Go Vols.

I agree we will be better at LB. But QB and WR? You are assuming young players/newcomers are going to come in and outperform the guys they are replacing. There's a decent chance that doesn't happen. Just don't know.

Bzzzz! Wrong answer...Hooker was sacked 26 times in 22 and 15 in 21. You will come back and say "Oh wow only 2 less" but it just proves you don't know what you're talking about.
Hendon was sacked 36 times in 2021 and 23 times in 2022. That’s with him missing most or all of 4 games those years due to injury/being a backup, and also with him sitting in a lot of 2nd halves.

Please tell me more about how I don’t know what I’m talking about.

If we don't score 45 points I will be disappointed in our offense

It’s more the timing… Nico was set for a big jump this year.. as much as vol nation Hates him, he was still the starting Qb on a playoff team in the sec… can’t undermine the experience no matter how much you think he had to do with the playoff run.. I hate we lost him when we did and I do think he would’ve had a nice jump in production this year… it’s fair for the media to have the concern but none of it matters and the players get the chance to create their own stories n legacies…
Lol, the way the Media acts like losing Nico is so devastating you would think we put up 9000 yards last season.
