Sunday observations...

I think this is fairly solid analysis. At the end of the day, we beat a team that was smaller and slower than we were at almost every position.

For me, the most important facet of the game was this team actually came out of the locker room at halftime. In a way, the 2nd quarter fumble was a great piece of adversity for this team to overcome. And they overcame it with some style.

Despite the win, I was ready to jettison Chaney during the game. His philosophy on the running game just seems anathema to Tennessee. However, on reflection:

1. For the first time in the Dooley era, the Vols put together a tough, clock eating, 3rd quarter drive that effectively put a fork in the opposition.

2. Running out of the pistol had to be some sort of subterfuge to confuse Muschamp and Co.

Judgment Day on Jim Chaney is definitely Sep 15th.

For me, this might be the best takeaway from the opening game. After the way the first half ended, I was entirely convinced during halftime that we were going to lose the game. There was nothing from either of Dooley's past teams to make me think that they were going to overcome that adversity and finish the game off. They completely proved me wrong, and I was glad to see it happen.

We may be on to something here. Given the NFL is a passing league, yet no one runs the pistol outside of a nitch play. I find that odd. Perhaps they need your expertise and insight.
Trying hard to see what you are trying to point out. They don't use the pistol in the NFL...and? I never said the pistol is some new age miracle formation. I said people who say you need a mobile QB to run it are silly because it is basically a hybrid of the shotgun and single back formations taking the best aspects of both. The fact a lot of teams don't see it can freak them out and this is its biggest real advantage. This of course would be a lot less effective in the NFL where the players are a lot less likely to be wide eyed about it. Honestly defending the pistol is not going to be a lot different from defending single back 3 wides.

Now because I said you don't have to have a mobile QB for the pistol does not mean it does not give certain advantages if you have one. But it really comes down to this the pistol is just a way to simplify things for your players in the grand scheme. Your QB has to take less of a drop so can make a quick pass faster than if he was under center in a single back but is in a better setup to hand the ball off than in the shotgun. In the NFL

Niche is the word you were looking for by the way.

Every championship team that Tennessee has ever had could run the football on 3rd and 4......that is nothing I have to argue to prove....it is a fact.

And that is completely irrelevant as to why Chaney is or is not a good OC.
