stupid question

The only stupid question is the one not asked. The West coast are all the states in the west that border the Pacific Ocean

The way somebody explained it to me is basically reversing the philosophy between running and passing. Traditional football is played by run, run, run to set up the pass. West Coast Offenses are pass, pass, pass to set up the run. Basically switching the roles of the passing and running plays. It is dominated by short, crisp passes...mostly quick slants and outs to spread the defense and open up running lanes. There usually aren't very much downfield passes. The system is dependent upon an accurate QB with a quick release.

I always thought Spurrier's "fun-n-gun" was just a suped up west coast offense.

thanks. looks like we really do need a new accurate qb running that o.

I am no genius with the whole west coast deal, but I think the best it was ever run was when the 49ers used it with Montana. :good!:

Joe Montana apparently doesn't fit the mold of CLK's offense. Joe Cool was 6'2 200 and clutch. Tajh Boyd is 6'1 205 and rivals rates him the most accurate in nation.

I am with you on the WCO origin. I believe it became famous out in SF in the late 80's. Its what Bill Walsh, Mike Holmgreen, John Gruden, Norm Chow and USC run/ran.

What does Boyd's height and weight have to do with being a QB in our system? I guarantee that has nothing to do with why Kiffin told him he would not be a fit here. Generalizing and listening to rivals is not the way to find our future leader.

Pretty much summed it up, it spreads the field horizontally and is very efficient if you have a coach and a QB that know how to run it. It gets mixed up with the Air Coryell offense which was mistakingly dubbed the west coast offense as well. Air Coryell is very different, and relies on spreading the field vertically.

Oh really. So what inside info do you have of the conversation between Boyd and Kiffin? I think your post has ignorance written all over it. You are so quick to discount my opinion with gurantees but I GURANTEE that you can't gurantee anything that was said between the two. And unless you were on 3 way with Boyd and Kiffin or know them personally, you are infact making a generalization in order to discount my generalization. Second of all, CLK has yet to ask my opinion in regards to our future leader so my opinions will not have any effect on personnel decisions. But in case he does need an expert opinion, I will direct him to you since you have legitimized your opinions as significantly better than the rest of us.

Since we got the Todd McShay of Volnation online, I would hate to waste the opportunity to discuss this further. Because CLK has turned down two QBs and yet to get a committment from any others, we can only assume what CLK's QB will NOT look like. Joe Montana and Tajh Boyd are the same height and weight and both are/were very accurate passers. Time will tell if Boyd is as clutch as Joe Montana, but he appears to have all the talent to be a top passer in CFB. But despite his desire to play in a pro style system and ability to do so, he does not fit the prototype of a LK QB. And even though Joe Montana was one of the best QBs to play in a WCO, its safe to say that the QB CLK is looking for will be taller than both Boyd and Montana.

All I was saying is this: If you need a good example of what our offense will look like, the Montana/49er teams of the 80s would be a good example. However, despite knowing that, don't expect our QB to look like Joe because CLK's ideal QB is taller than 6'2. So there is my in-depth generalization of what our QB will not look like.

I explained the rationale behind my thinking so now its your turn to justify your bold gurantee. What was said b/w CLK & TB and what will our "future leader" look like? I love it when people dismiss others ideas/opinions but offer no explanation or example to support their arguement.

From what I can tell about west coast offense is that it is spread. A lot of it is ran out of shotgun. But you will see a ton of receivers on the field.

You talking about Uncle Sam (previous avatar)??? Yeah, he became famous on the One More Saturday Night soundtrack. I thought the Christmas Bear was festive for the holidays. It came down between Christmas Bear and Jerry dressed up as Santa Clause. There is enough art out there to change it every week so I try to keep it interesting. Thanks for the compliment.
