Stripling loud and clear on potential of Appalachian State

Don't bother asking Steve Stripling if there's a danger of overlooking Appalachian State, Tennessee's opening opponent. You might as well ask if there's a danger of overlooking Alabama.

"There's two coaches on this staff who will never have to worry about that," UT's defensive line coach said. "Because we were both at Michigan when (Appalachian State) beat us."

Stripling and UT offensive coordinator Mike DeBord were assistant coaches on Lloyd Carr's staff when the unthinkable happened in Ann Arbor, Mich. Appalachian State upset Michigan 34-32 on its home field in the 2007 season opener.

Stripling loud and clear on potential of Appalachian State

Said it time and again, check the T-FP daily , esp on Sunday for Patrick Brown's articles. He's the best UT beat writer in the state.

Coaches have to say those things and as much as possible get the players to look at every team as a serious threat. But Michigan had gotten complacent and sloppy under Carr much like UT did under Fulmer.

To Michigan's and his, Carr recognized the pressure being applied and retired though he never had a losing season and performed well in all of their rivalry games. They made the program bigger than Carr.... and so did Carr.

Strip and DeBord did not have the talent they have now when they lost to Appy St. at Michigan. No way we lose. Will it be closer than most think? Very possible, but no L in the loss column.

Some people think it is a good idea to play with a copperhead. Some people think it is a better idea to smash its head flat first.

Michigan let them hang around and then made enough mistakes to lose.

Umm ... they didn't "let us hang around". We were up by two touchdowns at the half. The problem was that we let them come back. :dance2:

But for the teams in 07 that was letting you hang around. Michigan players went out there thinking they were gonna roll no matter what they did. Even when App St took a 2 score lead the players still didn't have a sense of urgency. It wasn't until the 2nd half that they realized they were going to have to actually play at a high level to win. By then App St believed they could actually win and there wasn't enough time on the clock for the comeback.

So.... you think Michigan took you as serious as they took tOSU.... and you beat them straight up? They had almost 500 yds of O against ASU.

It was an incredible game that everyone outside of Michigan thoroughly enjoyed.... but let's not make it something it wasn't.

Sorry ... forgot the sarcasm font. I have no delusions at all about App's win in Ann Arbor or about the difference between an App caliber and a UT caliber team. I've followed college football (particularly SEC football) for nearly 60 years. Reality and I are close friends.

App only played something like 29 players that entire Michigan game. Talk about a lack of depth on our side! Our kids were hyper-prepared both mentally and physically. Michigan wasn't and figured out too late that App actually intended to win after the first half.

There's even a clip of an App practice that one can hear Coach Moore saying, "That kid'll help us at Michigan if we can get him on the plane" (referring to Armanti Edwards and his lack of flying experience).

But I digress ...

Is it September yet? I'm ready for some football!

AppFan82. Don't you get it yet? You aren't even allowed to say App has a good team. Anything less than acknowledging a 75-3 loss is insulting to Vol Nation. It cracks me up that Tennessee is going to win this game, but the fan base is so insecure that they must keep beating their chest about how bad App is going to get demolished. Do you think Alabama fans do that when they play schools like Troy? Their fans act like they know they will win and wish the other team well.

You should realize that said comments about the demolition of Appy State generally are in regards to other posters freaking straight the eff out over the Michigan game from almost a decade ago? And the vast majority of the base knows we will win, hopes no injuries occur (on either team) and wishes Appy State well with the remainder of their season.

Don't go thinking a few clowns speak for the majority of the fan base.

Insecure? Ain't nobody insecure over here Nancy. We're straight up talking smack, being disrespectful. Wish Appy state well....after Tennessee whips that arse. If you don't like what you read on a TENNESSEE message board, bounce your ass on outta here. Go tell the world, on Appy State's message board, how they're gonna pull another "Michigan '07" and beat big bad Tennessee. Good luck with that champ.

Good job proving my point in spades, complete with name calling. No one thinks App is going to win this game. Tennessee is absolutely loaded this year. But apparently App and Tennessee are heated rivals to guys like you, so smack talking is warranted obviously. But not clever, intelligent smack talking. Just simple mouth running which brings me back to my original point. Call me a name again. That'll show me.
