Strictly talent wise, where do we stand now?

Objectively looking at our current roster, where would you rank us just on talent level in our 14 team conference?

I'd love to see an update from DAJ on this question. He does good statistical analysis of recruiting classes.

The only thing I'd like to see added would be consideration of lost talent (a #5 recruiting class may not remain the 5th best after two years of above-normal attrition).

It's a lot of work, so I understand DAJ's reluctance to add that burden to his efforts. But his resulting argument that "all teams have attrition, it's not a major factor" does not ring true to me.

I'd love to see where we stack up in talent with our current rosters. I think perhaps we would not be in the top third of the SEC, perhaps somewhere around center of mass.

1ST Team vs 1st team, probably 5th or 6th, if you rate it as 1st 2nd and third vs the same, prob 11 or 12

I believe there was an article on this subject a few weeks ago, the author stated that Tennessee's current roster ranked 11th or 12th nationally. In my most humble opinion that is quite high as I do not recall them taking into account current injury status - Smith, Kirkland, et. al. - but did include early departures to the NFL.

Our issue has not been the lack of talent but the lack of coaches developing the players on the roster.

Hopefully CJP and company can instill discipline and sound fundamental football so that we can improve across the board.

there's good SEC talent in the starting 22. there's some quality depth in a couple spots.

overall, quality/competitive depth-wise...across the whole roster.....definitely middle of the pack.

Want to gauge talent? How many of the players on our roster would crack the starting line up at alabubba, the barn, or jawja. CPJ &Co are tasked with closing the talent gap.

Our last 3 classes have been 7th, 7th, and 8th in the SEC. We've had subpar S&C. We've had coaching change/attrition. We've had bad technique/coaching that has led to injuries. A lot of our talent never developed. We went 0-8 in the SEC with our "talent". We have limited elite playmakers and only 1 or 2 elite playmakers on the lines. There's no elite QB to cover up talent deficiencies. We are 9th or 10th at best.

Spot on, and when you add attrition, and failure to recruit back up depth at certain positions, everything has to be re worked. Pray for ZERO injuries.

Yeah, I’m at about 10.
Only higher than Vandy, Ky, Mizzou and Arky.

Honestly no idea. When teams like Missouri, who according to scouting services, have averaged the 38th best recruiting classes the last 5 years compared to our 13th or so, yet they run over us, around us, past us, and make us look just generally far inferior to their players athletically.....just hard to know what’s what. Ditto goes for Vandy.

Great points. How can we possibly be 3rd or 4th when we were 7th or 8th in the SEC conference the last few years. Then throw in what we all saw with our eyes last year when the team played everybody from GaTech and UMass to Georgia and Alabama.....I think it’s very prudent to strongly suspect that, with a handful of exceptions, this team just isn’t very talented at all.

If Trey Smith, Juan Jennings,Kirkland, Chance Hall, TK Jr avg 8 or more starts.....you could argue we are about a 6 or 7

Add Emmitt Gooden if he qualifies and if Chyrst starts and it clicks for him...then 5/6 could be achievable.

Based on the average star ranking of the current roster of each team, including the incoming recruiting classes for each, we are tied for fourth in the SEC with Auburn

Alabama 3.93
Georgia 3.72
LSU 3.64
Auburn 3.57
Tennessee 3.57
Florida 3.39
Texas A&M 3.38
Ole Miss 3.29
Arkansas 3.24
Kentucky 3.21
South Carolina 3.20
Mississippi State 3.15
Missouri 3.11
Vandy 2.97
