Strictly talent wise, where do we stand now?

Recruiting wise: 4th behind AL, Geo and LSU with FL and Aub close by.

However, attrition has been higher than other programs, so I would say talent-wise, we are around 4-5th...pretty much dead even with Florida.

But one of the missing links have been development/S&C; and we will close the gap considerably this year and especially next year.

Based on the average star ranking of the current roster of each team, including the incoming recruiting classes for each, we are tied for fourth in the SEC with Auburn

Alabama 3.93
Georgia 3.72
LSU 3.64
Auburn 3.57
Tennessee 3.57
Florida 3.39
Texas A&M 3.38
Ole Miss 3.29
Arkansas 3.24
Kentucky 3.21
South Carolina 3.20
Mississippi State 3.15
Missouri 3.11
Vandy 2.97

Now, go back and watch last year’s Missouri and Vanderbilt games again, and then try and square what you see with the list you just posted. Also, where would App State and UMass rank on this list?

Objectively looking at our current roster, where would you rank us just on talent level in our 14 team conference?

How do we stack up against the 12 teams on our schedule?

We have better talent than 7 or 8. I expect CJP&S to make better use of the talent. At the same time their coaching will improve the play of our talent.

CJP is a football coach.

Technically Derek Dooley and Butch Jones are football coaches.

I'm taking a quick break from working on something, so I don't have time to dig out the data, but based on memory, I'd say raw talent-wise, we're behind:

(1) Alabama
(2) Georgia
(3) Auburn
(4) LSU

And we're ahead of:

(1) Kentucky
(2) Vanderbilt
(3) Missouri
(4) Arkansas
(5) Miss State
(6) Ole Miss

We're probably in the same vicinity of:
(1) Florida
(2) South Carolina
(3) Texas A&M

So, talent-wise, somewhere between #5 and #8 in the conference. Based on recruiting rankings, we're probably on the high end of that range. Based on actual coaching over the past few years ... eh ... hopefully Pruitt et al will improve things quickly.

We did have an intern coaching our team

All that really matters is the talent versus the upcoming schedule.

Therefore, based merely on past recruiting rankings ONLY the Vols have more talent on this roster to beat everyone on their schedule this season except Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia. But, we all know that recruiting is only part of the formula.

10 or more wins would be out of the question.

8 or 9 wins would be exceeding expectations.

6 or 7 wins would be on par with expectations.

5 wins or less would mean the demand for alcohol among UT Fans is ever increasing.

When 2 deeps are released that’s what you compare with recruiting rankings. Add in extra points for upperclassmen. My guess is we’re in the 8-11 range vs opponents.

I think we are in the lower tier in the SEC talent wise. Think about how many guys we have that would start on other SEC teams. I would say Smith, maybe Bituli and Warrior would be starters for the big dogs like UGA, Bama and Auburn. We may have another 4-5 players that could start for the rest of the teams. We are nowhere nearly as talented as some want to believe.

Our last 3 classes have been 7th, 7th, and 8th in the SEC. We've had subpar S&C. We've had coaching change/attrition. We've had bad technique/coaching that has led to injuries. A lot of our talent never developed. We went 0-8 in the SEC with our "talent". We have limited elite playmakers and only 1 or 2 elite playmakers on the lines. There's no elite QB to cover up talent deficiencies. We are 9th or 10th at best.

Agree with this. 8th would be absolute best case scenario. Prove us wrong CJP

Here’s a base for us to start from: We were 0-8 in the SEC last year. (As in DEAD LAST)

SEC caliber starters?

OFFENSE

- We don’t have a proven QB who would start in the SEC

- Trey Smith is the only offensive lineman who would start on an SEC team

- Ty Chandler could start at most schools

- Tight End: ....crickets

- WR: Nope...can’t think of anyone. Maybe Callaway

DEFENSE

- DL: Shy Tuttle is a player

- LB: Daniel Bitulli is a player

- DB: Still knocking on dorm room doors to see if anyone wants to play..

I would rank us somewhere between 9 and 14. Hopefully this helps.

Maybe our new coaches' new systems on both sides of the ball are the most difficult obstacles to overcome in year one. I think they will make a lot of progress in year one. How much? I don't be knowing. Hope to see some great moments. Prolly be some not so great. The ratio will determine how many games we win and lose.

Somewhere between ETSU and MTSU. 18 months they will pass Memphis and Vandy and be
back into SEC East contention.

Yeah, I’m at about 10.
Only higher than Vandy, Ky, Mizzou and Arky.

I agree. Of course, that’s just assessing talent though. Unfortunately, you can’t win games based on talent alone. You actually have to play the game. While we may have better talent than a few of the other teams in the conference, that didn’t prevent us from getting our a$$e$ kicked by them.

If Trey Smith, Juan Jennings,Kirkland, Chance Hall, TK Jr avg 8 or more starts.....you could argue we are about a 6 or 7

Add Emmitt Gooden if he qualifies and if Chyrst starts and it clicks for him...then 5/6 could be achievable.

I even passed up the delusional "we have top 3 or 4 talent in the league" posts to say this one sounds more ridiculous. Suddenly Gooden and Chryst catapults the Vols up the talent Richter scales??? Got it!
