You're the one who chose to use Saban's first season as the example. Seems you didn't quite understand how that season went. He was able to win 4 SEC games, demolish the rival SECe champs and make a bowl. Will UT get anywhere close to that level of ineptitude this season?

I made NO comparison to the teams the beat or lost to, you did that!!
Two completely different teams but same overall RECORD with a NEW COACH!
THAT was my only comparison, Stop putting words in my mouth!!!

In truth he needs 4 recruiting cycles to fairly evaluate, at that point you should be competitive and showing strides. He for sure deserves 4 or 5 years to get us there. Myself I still expect marked improvement by year 3 and after year 3 you probably at least have a fill for how it is going to go. But Pruitt deserves and will get a fair shake of at least 5 years, and I have no problem with that. At this point we need stability and to learn how to win and recruit very well. We are no where near coach shopping stage, I still have faith in Coach Pruitt and this staff to get it done. GBO!!!!!!!

We’ll know if he’s worth a damn by end of season 2.

All of us are down. Have been for about ten years. Some of our veteran players seem to be unwilling to put out the effort to change the attitude which has developed over the past few years. I believe that CJP will be able to change the attitude and drive of our football program and realized that change football coaches ever 3-4 years is not going to correct any of the problems which need to be addressed. T established coaches are not interested in jeopardizing their current status by agreeing to a football program which has fallen as far as our programs. CJP seems to have the attitude and experience at major football powers to bring success to Tennessee if given the time to do it. I am willing to ride this out for at least 5 years unless something major appears to change my mind.

See Mark Stoops at Kentucky. UT would have fired him 3 times by now.

Building a culture for 20 year old kids who have never known a great Vol football team in their lifetime takes more than a couple of years. Particularly with the administration that UT has had.

You can give him 4-6 years but that better include some continued success each year. I believe we will be happy with our coach in 3-4 years.

It's the culture with the top donors, imo. There's no interest in being somebody's "boy" by any top tier coach.

Personally would be fine paying more on the front end of these things without spending millions for buy outs to pay people to not work here if I were I'm charge.

Just might have attracted a little better caliber of candidate for the job as well.

My comment was made in pure snarkiness though.

Pruitt has his big contract and gets 3 and probably 4 years minimum barring disaster. Don't see anything changing that so not much point debating it.

Year 1 isn't passing the eye test so far and is shaping up to be an unmitigated disaster though. There are a lot of things to clean up with this team.

Nah, you can get a good idea if a guy can coach after 1 season and know for sure after 2.

A good coach can improve the play of anyone.

A great proven coach can. Not someone of Pruitts experience. He needs time, lots of it. Saban, belichick, parcels, Carroll. These guys all proved they could turn around a team in 1 to 2 years, but they were very experienced coaches. Some of them proven by having already won championships.

With a good coach you will see fundamentals getting better and mistakes getting fewer during his first season, the wins might not come but you will see the team playing better.

If the team shows no improvement after 1 year you probably don't have THE guy.

I just disagree. The culture of impatience that has swept through college football is rampant.

Anyway, year 1 of new schemes on both sides of the ball, then take into account Pruitts practice structure where the starters don't get all of the attention ( like it was under Butch ), and you might start seeing minor improvements the last game or two of the year.

If we had hired a 50 something year old guy like Leach who had years and years and years of coaching experience under his belt, then yes, 4 to 5 years is all you give that man. With all his experience, he either has it or he doesn't by then. But, we didn't hire a Leach type coach. We hired a young relatively inexperienced coach who has shown great promise. Give him 8 years to make us a national power once again

Just stop. It doesn't take years to teach the fundamentals of football, it takes vigilance to keep reinforcing them. All of these players have learned new schemes and have had various coaches during their playing careers, they know the basics. And a good coach will improve on the basics in year 1.

If you are really paying attention to the subtleties, there is improvement in quite a few areas. Consider if you will, this is a team that had completely quit playing for their coach toward the end of last season and imo had begun quitting at the end of the season before that. Yes, the last game wasn't pretty, but neither is any game where there are that many turnovers. Considering the circumstances, we are lucky CJP doesn't quit, but he won't, not in his character.

Higher expectations because of money to be made and glory to be had.

The fact that coaches are being paid more doesn't across the board mean they get less time because the money big time colleges are making outweighs the hike in coach pay. Besides, cjp and his staff aren't making saban and staff type money. Not even close. If we paid a new coach and his staff saban and staff type money, you bet we better see year 3 and 4 results. But, that is what a proven championship caliber coach can do and that's why he makes what he makes

West Va game was ugly, Florida game was ugly, next 3 will be really ugly. I don't get giving every coach blind loyalty just because he is the coach here, he may succeed in a big way but it's also possible he fails miserably. Also when someone gets paid that much results are expected, he should not get a pass. As bad as Butch was at least even in his worst year he didn't get blown out by Florida.
