What the heck happened to the VFL's I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst.

Why would some 18 year old kids deciding to go to Tennessee be the best day of your life and CBJ saying stupid things make it the worst?:loco:

Which really points to the fragility of this fanbase...and the need for many to grow a pair!

Looking at this from 10,000 feet up in the air, how would a game from last season change the perception about a recruiting class? I'm honestly asking? I don't really see a connection to the 2.

2016 is gone. The "value" of this class won't be truly measured until 2019, or so. The players coming in are the players coming in. Once they step foot on the practice field, star ratings go out the window. No one cares. It's about what you do over the next 3-5 years...not what you did in HS.

If you want to look at the ranking relative to where we stand within the SEC, that's fine. But it doesn't completely predict the future.

You assume the premise of he post is true....and it's NOT! It wasn't just 1 loss.....it was BOTH LOSSES and finishing 4-4 in the SEC and losing the East outright after being in control....

This Tennessean article is a fairly accurate description of the state of the fanbase, which isn't the program but seemed appropriate to link here: 'Five-star heart'? Vols recruiting class spins both ways

We've got one group, and I admit to being in it, that's referred to as the digital pitchfork carrying mob and another group who are dutifully screening out the shortcomings in light of the ground that has been covered in the past four years. It's not anything new to declare this division here on VN where we post and read about this stuff all the time, but it is new to have it being carried by credible in-state media outlets. There's some heat under Butch but there's also a cushion. Each side need to acknowledge the presence of the other and accept that we all want to win championships again but have some differing ideas on how that could best be accomplished in the shortest amount of time. Barring crazy off the field stuff or really dramatic recruiting developments, there won't be much to discuss on this front until after the final whistle of the GT game. I'm going to try and keep my powder dry until then and not antagonize those of you who still have faith that Butch hasn't reached his ceiling. I'm not perfect and may not be able to resist taking a pot a shot every now and then but I don't see much point in 7 months of useless arguing. Looking forward to all those best BBQ joint threads.

My Nehi-fueled reveries have some of you quick to spray-paint me sunshine pumper orange. How we pass the long off-season is our own indulgence. At this moment, between the recruits signing and the start of Spring practice, my mind drifts to the players on our roster playing beyond expectations, overcoming opponents and coaching boo-boos alike, finding ways to win - a team that clicks. Yes, I dream of a team that sweeps the East and defeats one or both of Bama and LSU.

The thing is, reality will be upon us soon enough. For now, I do not dwell on CBJ's faults, foibles, or "Butchisms." I think of the players and what it would mean to them and us, the fans, if they were to do the improbable, the seemingly impossible. Ah, that would be grand...

In less than 2 hours, I will trade my Nehi for bourbon and my thoughts will turn to other things. GBO.

Butch Jones and the Vols lost to Vandy and SCe in his 4th season as HC.

Pundits suggest that this is the reason Butch Jones and the Vols just had the worst recruiting class since Jones took over at UT.

Jones 1st class was ranked 24th, this one was ranked 17th. 24 < 17, thanks pundits, thought I understood math but guess not.

There is a good chance that we only start 1 underclassmen this year. Starting 21 seniors, juniors, and redshirt sophomores is a good indicator for success. How can so many of you miss that?

Guess the real question is when will all the haters jump back on the Butch bandwagon? When he wins in Gainesville, beats Kirby again, pulls off a miracle in Tuscaloosa, smacks LSU down in Neyland, or maybe when he drops 40+ on Muschamp?

If all of those happen next year, Butch will get a statue and be named permanent Governor.

I guess your predictions at the end make it all better even thougb there is little to no logic behind them all.

I like the underclassesmen starting numbers, but let me ask you this.
Who starts in place of these guys? Ill list their names and ask you, how starts and how that translates to a better team next year.

Cam Sutton -

Josh Dobbs-

Josh Malone -

Alvin Kamara -

Derek Barnett -

Kenny Bynum -

Malik Foreman -

Corey Vereen -

Jalen Hurd -

I'm not a hater but he needs to do at least one of the first 4 to keep his job. Dropping 40 on Muschamp is no big deal - USF did this without hardly trying in one quarter.

It's This 1,000%! There is no development of the players. If the players aren't studs their freshman year, then they don't ever grow as players under CBJ. Which is why I don't buy into this ideology that a lot of have written about. Finding diamonds in the rough or foreseeing talent in this three star heavy class and then fine tuning them into something elite. CBJ has not shown that he has this capability in his four years here. Someone posted a spot on assumption in the nsd thread. Butch just signed whoever he could and is hoping that they turn out to be something great. I mean, the CJ Lewis offer early in the off season was enough for me to question what was going on.

Cam Sutton, Dobbs, the entire OL, Jennings, Malone. I could go on. All of these players have developed in their time here.

Dropping 40 on Muschamp is no big deal? Lol in 12 quarters we have scored 57 points ans are 0-3.

What's the common denominator in those loses?

Seems to me we lost half our team and guys kept stepping in and playing beyond their years until we ran out of bodies. Are you saying we only have one chance in history? What is going here? Why are we holding on to the past in college ball?

I think Jones has underperformed. I think it's his offense (not Bajakian nor Debord). I hope like crazy that next year proves me wrong.

Butch Jones has struggled against instate rival Vanderbilt and his last recruiting class is rated 7th in the SEC, but Jones still insists that the Vols are back?:whistling:

98 team was stacked with talent dude, lets not act like we are in the same situation here.

I don't feel we lack talent. And the point is you never know how it turns out. Plus, no one thought we would win ththe national championship after we didn't do it with Peyton. Don't act like we were given a shot because we had talent. That's stupid.

Sure we have talent, but it simply isnt comparable to what we had coming back in 98. Call me stupid all you want, its foolish to think the talent level is comparable. And sure noone knows exactly how its gonna turn out, but you can predict most likely scenerios and that is no where near a championship level team. Lets not act like Manning lead teams were going 8-4 and they won the NC the following year.
