Spring Practice Updates Day 2

Weren't we all mad because Butch had his fingerprints over everything. And now we have a HC who's trying to stay in his lane somewhat and now we have folks complaining.

One thing that struck me was a couple of OL clips. While they are sliding to get in front/side of the defensive lineman they are continuing to move/block downfield. There was a north-south element I never saw with CBJ's practices....there everything seemed east-west. I like it.

What it translates into on game day, I have no idea. Hoping for the best though.

Jj watt attacks blocking sled - YouTube
Here watch JJWatt. This should help explain it.

Not exactly sure unless JJ decided to explain it, but it seems to be a drill sort of like what some baseball players do when warming up or practicing. It's not uncommon to see baseball players throwing the ball in a drill from their knees. It helps isolate that part of the upper body used in throwing. Same thing appears to be happening here. One of the largest muscles in your body is located in your upper back part of the thigh (forget its name at the moment, I'm old). This drill removes you from using it which strengthens the other parts. Hope this helps.

There is also a head coach that is MIA because he still thinks he is a position coach not to mention that he has already admitted that he is ignoring offense completely.

This isn't going to end well.

I’ve been around a lot of football.
The guys that don’t make it are the guys that aren’t busy
It’s common place for HC to help in practice
Each one has there own specialty

Saban: Defense
Meyer: Oddly enough his was special teams at Florida

Arguably two of the best to coach. Yes, I know but when his heads in the game Meyer can flat out coach with anyone

So there shouldn’t be any problem with Pruitt coaching too.

I see that the Kiffen/Butch/ Dooley apologists/ Grumor seekers have drank the Pruitt koolaid. Volnation has truly become the dumbest fanbase in america.

I'm glad Pruitt is not trying to micro manage every position like Butch did. Let your Assistants coach their groups that is what they are there for. I think we'll be a better team without the micro management. We will certainly get better defensively with Pruitt helping there.

Certainly so if the players buy what Pruitt is selling. If they don't then the cycle will continue.

What is one of the first things Pruitt has done to get us more competitive? Put players in more appropriate positions.

If you looked at highlights from Tyler Byrd and Evan Berry from High School. It was pretty obvious one was a defensive player...the other offensive.

Yet..somehow Butch had them flipped! You and others will see how badly this roster was mismanaged

Look at recruiting rankings from guys across the board on defense.
It's 4th probably....behind Bama, UGA and LSU.

Taylor, Allen, Patterson are all special edge rushers. They'll be standing up and making plays to.

Talent wise defensively we are right on par with LSU...

Not even close to LSU's talent level. Based on the players they have, UT is slow at LB, weak at DT, no proven speed rusher on the edge, no proven cover corner (none), and only one player who has proven himself to have the ability to play safety in the SEC.

I will be happy if we can just get this set of linebackers to just line up correctly. That would be a huge improvement.

I really want to believe you but there are no facts to support your post.

Your post was also one of opinion, not fact. Just a counter-opinion to the one you responded to.

I do partially agree with you, in that LSU tends to reload on D with talent from their in-state base, E. TX, S. Miss, etc.

But to say that we don't have anywhere close to their talent is an unsupported opinion. If you are basing on past production, or lack thereof, one has to point out that the guys here now are not the exact same set as the guys present and on field last year, and that's true for both Vols and LSU.

To the troll, Lyle ain't coming back and Gruden never was coming.

I believe this drill mainly focuses on leverage and explosiveness off an opponent. That's my best guess.

This drill teaches defensive lineman how to disruptively punch the offensive lineman from a leverage position. In order to disengage a lineman at the point of attack you have to have forceful and violent hands.
This is one way to practice it like the offense use it for practice to drive block the defender. It is heavy and can take the abuse.

Honest question for any coaching types out there...whats the purpose of the linemen hitting the sleds while on their knees? What is that developing?
Coaching points
1.) strike your opponent.. So your hands are the first things that move along with a gather step. (Gather step optional)
2.) explode with your hips forwards and upwards through your target.
3.) create seperation from your target.. Curl your elbows in, so you can absorb the contact and not collapse your arms allowing the OL into your chest.. You do that you lose.
4.) your feet come last.

So by being in a 6 point explosion stance or a 4 point stance allows then to work on exploding with your hips into the target.. Helps them with push back on the linemen along with creating seperation from your target to help with vision and destroying blocks.
