Butch was never going anywhere. Michigan was not going to hire Butch. Butch used the opening to get a raise.

With all the coaches represented by Creative Arts Agency, not too hard for CBJ's agent, Trace Armstrong, to dangle the rumor to Hart. It's a small bump of a raise, just the beginning of a long, long process of pulling out money across the board for all these coaches to be "rumored" for any top level opening.

I actually admire those ADs who go after one person, even not known to the general fan base, and have the "surprise hire" instead of pursuing who the agents put on the radar.

Agents are the necessary evil, I guess, in college sports.

Don't kid yourself on my man crush, he isn't the second coming of Robert Neyland but he is the best man for the job right now. There are very few sure bets in terms of coaches and none of them are coming here so I see no point in moaning 24 hours a day about it.

I wad listening to ESPN yesterday around mid-day as they talked about Michigan job and Butch was NEVER mentioned at all. Even in that second tier list you get to when you cannot get your dream coach Butch was not mentioned. Who knows what really happened?

My honest opinion, Butch lobbied for a pay raise and will end up giving it all to his assistants. No way a man making 3+ mil a year agrees to a measly 250K increase if he seriously is about the money. He's hooking his staff up

The assistants are getting a raise too if I read that post on an earlier thread correctly. He might have lobbied or just went about his recruiting business and let his agent work some angles as agents do. Otherwise, you might as well not have an agent. The other scenario was all the other hcs were getting huge raises and extensions all over the sec, one of which didn't even make a bowl game, and the AD said we need to come off of some revenue for these guys.

Head coaches can't pony up for assistants' raises out of their own pocket. Richt got dinged for trying that two years ago iirc.

Sure we all get that, I liked Phil a lot for a long time.

It's been a long time now and looking back he worked in a pretty weak SEC. He also chunked away seasons where we were highly ranked. Pre season # 3 and wound up I think with seven losses.

Butch is taking heat for going 5-7 and 6-6 thus far.

I'm not saying he is above reproach like some of his advocates. I'm not saying 5-7 and 6-6 are reasonable for this program.

I am saying we fired Fulmer for tanking down to the 5/6/7 win area. The great Phil Fulmer. Meanwhile we got people on here remembering him fondly and bashing Butch uncontrollably. Butch may have a similar record to Phil's worst years but he also didn't turn a pre season #3 into a complete debacle. He actually turned what many predicted as a 4 win season and got us bowl eligible.

I agree we could have should have beat Florida/Georgia possibly but only because of the Coach's dedication to recruiting and ability to replace a roster suffering from attrition.

Point being he has ups and downs. His use of timeouts sometimes worries me. I'm not sold on Mahoney.
He works his ass off for this University though with a work ethic I don't think we have had since Fulmer's halfway point. He is a great recruiter and has put together a solid staff. Because of that I won't hammer him for putting together similar seasons to Phil Fulmer.

Agree with everything you wrote. My comment wasn't in relation to Butch in any way......just didn't like the insinuation from the poster that somehow Phil didn't earn his money and somehow cheated UT while he was our coach.

UT shouldn't even entertain the notion of raises for a ~.500 staff in my opinion. Do what you signed on for and exceed expectations and then look for a raise.

I'm not fine with raises for the simple fact that we're trying to ward off another school from taking him.

Every team in the country, and including the NFL, knew not to even bother contacting Fulmer cause he wasn't going anywhere regardless of what type of pay increase they offered. I want that kind of loyalty from Butch.

Then How do you explain fulmer not getting a coaching job since leaving ut?

We have a hired gun as a coach, no roots or ties to the university. If someone throws money at him he will be gone the next day. It is what it is. Don't get attached to the coaches.

This is a really good post and that's not a shot at Butch at all.
People around here tend to put way too much faith into any coach that puts on orange and leads the team through the T. If you go out and hire someone with zero ties to your university, it's not very wise to buy too much stock into their loyalty to you regardless of the catchy one liners they say.

article suggests 6 figure increase as well. That'd be nice. I honestly expected Butch's raise to be more. At 3.3 per year he's still at the bottom of the SEC in salaries.

Why not the team is in the bottom of the league? When ya win the pay should be commensurate. Ya go 6-6 and struggle to get there(Vandy anyone) you should feel lucky to get any raise. The only problem is when he goes 5-7 next year they won't reduce his pay.
