I am saying we fired Fulmer for tanking down to the 5/6/7 win area. The great Phil Fulmer. Meanwhile we got people on here remembering him fondly and bashing Butch uncontrollably. Butch may have a similar record to Phil's worst years but he also didn't turn a pre season #3 into a complete debacle. He actually turned what many predicted as a 4 win season and got us bowl eligible.

I agree we could have should have beat Florida/Georgia possibly but only because of the Coach's dedication to recruiting and ability to replace a roster suffering from attrition.

Point being he has ups and downs. His use of timeouts sometimes worries me. I'm not sold on Mahoney.
He works his ass off for this University though with a work ethic I don't think we have had since Fulmer's halfway point. He is a great recruiter and has put together a solid staff. Because of that I won't hammer him for putting together similar seasons to Phil Fulmer.

I like/agree with the premise of your post but the bolded was coach speak from Butch and completely untrue.

Well SDS has them ranked 12th out of 14 SEC teams.

CFP had them at 3-9 and ranked 100th in the country.

ESPN only had them favored in 5 games and "suggested" a 5-7 season.

Anyway, I'm not saying it wasn't partial coach speak but there were 4-8 predictions many of them on this board.:hi:

Don't rewrite history. Butch didn't speak all those 4-8 predictions. There were multiple articles, sports analysts, fans, etc that predicted those numbers. The majority was probably set at 5-7. It made me pissed seeing it all before the season started. Feinbaum and others thought we could lose to arky state and utah st. In fact, what were your predictions? I'd like to see the preseason post, but don't care enough to look the bs up.

Most vol fans want a johnny 2.0 because they hate change n a coach that is avg gives them comfort but let's dont rock the boat n expect more because that would mean change n please no more change....

Dude is making 3m a year to win 6 games...at this point.. N thats a fact. Until he beats the big 3 he will never win a championship.

I was wondering when people would start parroting that line back as the truth. Was it Goebbels that said "tell a lie often enough and people will start to believe it"?

Nobody in their right mind thought this was only a 4 win team, but I guarantee that before the next season starts that's what the majority of people will be claiming.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I never heard anyone claim we would only win 4. And if anyone did, we should all agree that they should never be listened to again.

I posted some sources and I agree they were horrible predictions but I don't see the wrong in a coach mentioning those nay Sayers as a rallying cry.

I was talking to a close friend of mine today about the raise that CBJ is getting and he asked me an interesting question and what I thought about it. He asked me if I remembered CBJ publicly stating that he was not interested in the Michigan job, loved it here, was going nowhere and that he was going to be here for a long time. I told him that I did. He said "well if he said that and he meant it, why all of this about raises, extensions etc. if he has no intentions of going anywhere?" "Did he lie?" He asked me how I would feel if it came out that he used the Michigan job to negotiate a raise after he made that statement. I told him that I wasn't sure. Hadn't thought about it.

I've been thinking about it and I'm still not sure. This is a totally different thing than asking if he deserves it or not.

Wow that's crazy. I can't imagine someone looking at a schedule with USU, ASU, Chat, all at home, and saying we would only win four games total. If Butch had only won four games, we would be having entirely different conversations lol.

Doesn't bother me a bit.

Mike Gundy did that with us to get a raise during our coach search. Have you ever tried to leverage your skills to get a raise? This is no different.. the numbers are just bigger.

Agreed it is crazy, but there were many predictions that had Utah st beating us and upset alert against ARKY ST.

UT was only 6.5 point favorites at home against Utah st. (Utah St by the way has proved to be a pretty good team despite amassing a number of injuries to starters at key positions like QB and LB)

I think most rational people and predictions had us at 6-6 but again I don't see the harm in pointing out the "under" for 2014 season wins. I am sure he used that line on may recruits.

Probably, but I'm sure I wouldn't publicly say the opposite. I would be concerned that it would raise a question about my integrity. But that's just me. I'm not saying that's what he did. But yeah, the more I think about it the more it would bother me if it happened.

And you know this how? Read it somewhere? Can't be speculation because you stated that its how things work. You an agent? Have a degree in sports management?

Read that back to yourself and you'll see how condescending it sounds.
