Some thoughts on what has transpired....

Trust me, he doesn't want to see what a "breakdown of the relationship" would really look like and the effects it would have on the program should the PD declare open season on the program.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Dooley start a ride along program to improve relations and teach the kids the cops are not out to get them?

It just seems like this is kind of petty to have the press it has had. This kind of stuff happens in Gibbs all the time, and this is the one that gets publicized. I'm sure it's just the roll of the dice in some aspects, but this should have been handled a little quieter is all I'm getting at. It's not like he went to Pilot and held someone up for a cheeseburger. :)

That was part of it yes, but the other part was to try and mend the ties between the KPD and UT, if I'm not mistaken.

"There have been several key team members over the years that have done this exact same thing, just wasn't publicized like this has been"

Didn't know we have had a huge problem with athletes stealing over there? Fights sure, but stealing not so much.

So you are saying the the police are at fault for this being out in the media?

residents of Gibbs go to jail "all the time" and we don't hear about it? Interesting

That information is always out there......just so happens Cam is a UT football player so people actually give a rip. He shouldnt get any more protection from release of information than any other student at UT who would be arrested.

Its public record and the media decides what they report. There are multiple DUI arrests a day but which ones get the media attention? In todays social media world nothing gets swept under the rug.

I'm just trying to remember all these other times a UT player got arrested and it was swept under the rug or we found out months later

he was arrested on campus anyway so it would have shown up in the crimelog. No one is safe from that one

But....but.....he should be given special considerations since he plays football. Its so unfair to him and the police are overstepping their power here

I didn't say that, nor wanted to infer that. It's obviously public record in the end, but it just seems like this is something that could have been handled more internally than it has been.

you only get that when you're winning and the sports writers have stuff to cover. As it is now....

What the hell does this mean then?
There are ways to handle things like this, especially when it involves UT athletics in Knoxville, but it's obvious that a little discretion is almost impossible for some of today's law enforcement to use.

I'm not picking on you Eric, but what would you suggest they have done?

So are you saying that he shouldn't have been arrested at all when found with stolen property? Because once that happens it becomes part of public record and there really isn't a way to handle it "more internally" from that point.

It's a serious charge. If he's proven guilty he's probably gone. You really can't handle that internally. That was going to get out one way or the other. Sad that maybe another player has made a potentially bad decision cost him a shot at playing big time football. Seems to happen a whole lot these days.

I just know that if some of the things that happened in Gibbs in the '90s came out in the open back then, there's no telling where we might have been as a football team then. This is a laptop, not drugs or anything crazy like that, so I guess I just don't see why they don't get the kid's laptop back to him, and deal with this internally with Cam. That could have been done here.

I know. It just seems as if this whole thing could have been handled differently is all I'm saying. I was probably a bit too forward in my original post.

Im all for letting the facts settle out for the kid before he is hung out to dry, but the picture is bleak at best for him. He made some really bad decisions and this is the real world he must deal with now. Media, cops, coworkers, coaches, and all.
