From Athlon Sports: "I don’t know with Dobbs. In my mind, he’s the one question they have offensively. He’s probably not as good as people make him out to be, but he does a solid job in their system."

From Athlon Sports: "Schematically, they do a good job of attacking you. They do some really unique stuff with their offensive line, pulling both guards opposite directions, stuff you don’t see week-in and week-out.”

From Athlon Sports: "Jalen Hurd is terrific and the other guy, Alvin Kamara, I thought he was strong as well.”

From Athlon Sports: "They’re just OK at wideout, nothing special, but they get a lot of production out of their tight ends.”

From Athlon Sports: “I think on defense they will move up significantly with Bob Shoop. He’s one of the best in the country, and he does such a great job teaching his system. They’ve got it down.”

From Athlon Sports: “Getting Cam Sutton back was huge because he’s just so good in coverage; your guy really has to make a great throw to beat him."

From Athlon Sports: "I would think the expectation for them should be to win the East, but they have to get over the mental hurdle of beating Florida. They don’t really have any excuses. They’ve been the better team the last two years and haven’t gotten it done.”

From Athlon Sports: "It’s probably a make-or-break year for Butch , especially with some of the off-the-field stuff they’ve been dealing with.”

Everything said was accurate except the part about getting a lot of production from our tight ends and the last statement about Butch....that was just ignorant.

Its not a "make or break year for Butch", You're telling that if Butch goes 9-4 again we are firing him?? Please.

Not much meat on those bones......

But I do expect our opponents will bring 8-9 into the box from disguised run-stopping blitzes...and zone blitzes....Press coverage to keep our receivers from getting off the LOS....Force Dobbs to make quick decisions and beat us with his arm....

NO rocket science to that formula....

and it was OBVIOUS last year that our Coaches didn't trust Dobbs to make the throws late in the 4th QTR to get first downs and extend drives....esp. against OK and Fla....USCe game was not a good performance at all for us on both sides of the ball....

It will be interesting to see if Debord shows the off-set I package with Dobbs under center that he ran some against NW....that would allow us to run some counter-action plays to take advantage of the run blitzes and zone blitzes....and keep defenses a little more honest with the threat of throwing the ball over LBs heads off of play-action..... like he did to Ellis in the bowl game....

I don't think we're gonna be able to line up against the SEC defenses and just impose our will at the LOS....we're still a few years away from having an O-Line with that developed ability.....:salute:

Seems like everyone agrees that at wideouts we are just 'OK'. I know Butch loves to say its just not receivers and its on all offense but honestly it is very rare to see any of our receivers getting open. We have athleticism there so it has to be scheme !! Azzani is not getting it done

I didn't expect any other coaches to bow down to us. We have to rip respect from the teams that have owned us for the last decade. Only then will we be feared. And the notion that this is a make or break year for Butch is laughable.

I don't think it's fair to say we are "just OK at wideout". We obviously have the talent in Josh Malone and Preston Williams. I think it would be more accurate to say "for whatever reason they haven't been able to put it together in the passing game."

That was probably a Florida assistant. Wolf had 4 catches for 55 yards against them including that jump pass.

The line about it being make or break for Butch because of some off field issues sounds like something that would be posted here by a rival.

Disagree a little bit with you. I think it is a make or break year for Butch. We lose so much after this year from a player standpoint and we are catching Florida at their weakest. This is the year to get it done because we will probably take a step back next year.

I don't think that's it at all. I think he means if Butch & UT can't get it done this season, when will they? This is as bad as the SEC E will be for a while. The schedule sets up "OK" for a run. Certainly having UF & Bama at home helps...theoretically.

If a HC in the SEC knows as much about UT as most of us, he's paying way too much attention to us & not enough to his own business. He'll have a short ride at his current school

Outside of a major scandal, Butch isn't going anywhere after this year. Even another average type 8-4 season won't have any affect on his job security IMO. The fanbase will be fit to be tied and will be screaming from the rooftops, but the power brokers who make the decisions won't come close to pulling the plug on him. Jmo.

There are flaws with this team and they will have to win some close games to get to Atlanta. Can't afford to have injuries at DT, OL, and LB. WRs will have to make some plays down the field and Dobbs will have to improve in the passing game. Vols also need a LT to step up and play well at that important position.

This team is much improved but they will not overwhelm top teams on their schedule (UF,UGA, UA, TA&M) on pure athleticism. They need to be able to make plays at crunch time. This remains to be seen.

Sounds Sabanesque.

From Athlon Sports: "Schematically, they do a good job of attacking you. They do some really unique stuff with their offensive line, pulling both guards opposite directions, stuff you don’t see week-in and week-out.”
Probably a HC who was a DC.

From Athlon Sports: "Jalen Hurd is terrific and the other guy, Alvin Kamara, I thought he was strong as well.”

From Athlon Sports: "They’re just OK at wideout, nothing special, but they get a lot of production out of their tight ends.”
UT's TE's had 31 of the team's 220 receptions and 418 of over 2500 yds.

Kamara had 34 receptions and Pearson had 38.

From Athlon Sports: “I think on defense they will move up significantly with Bob Shoop. He’s one of the best in the country, and he does such a great job teaching his system. They’ve got it down.”
Mason?

From Athlon Sports: “Getting Cam Sutton back was huge because he’s just so good in coverage; your guy really has to make a great throw to beat him."

From Athlon Sports: "I would think the expectation for them should be to win the East, but they have to get over the mental hurdle of beating Florida. They don’t really have any excuses. They’ve been the better team the last two years and haven’t gotten it done.”
Absolutely true statement. My guess would be Stoops.

From Athlon Sports: "It’s probably a make-or-break year for Butch , especially with some of the off-the-field stuff they’ve been dealing with.”

Wishful thinking by someone... Bielema? Muschamp?

Our wideouts have been "just OK" the past few years. Having the talent and showing it on the field are two different things. Dobbs may not be the best downfield passer, but a lot of catchable balls are dropped. If PWilly and Malone can step it up like they've been doing in practice, and if JSmith and JJ are healthy, it will be a non-issue.

CBJ does need to show he can turn great recruiting into big wins. While not "make or break" in terms of job security, he will incur a lot of negativity if the team underperforms in rival games or fails to make it to the SECCG. Next year will be tougher, and there is a win-now mentality around the program.

We may have a few "flaws" now, but the narrative likely will change by midseason.

Speaking on Vanderbilt: "I'm not exaggerating when I say this. Derek Mason is as good a defensive coach as there is in this world." Yeah, okay.

LOL.... not trying to bust your chops but every team has flaws.

True of Bama.... and everyone else.

Can't afford to have injuries at DT, OL, and LB.
Who can? Maybe Bama?

WRs will have to make some plays down the field and Dobbs will have to improve in the passing game.
And about 9 teams either have questions about their QB or don't know yet who it will be. As far as raw talent is concerned, UT is better off than most of the SEC.

Vols also need a LT to step up and play well at that important position.
UT replaces only one OL. This team has deeper OL talent than any team in this century. There are at least 2 and probably 3 guys with more physical talent than Kerbyson had.

This team is much improved but they will not overwhelm top teams on their schedule (UF,UGA, UA, TA&M) on pure athleticism. They need to be able to make plays at crunch time. This remains to be seen.

Again, true of every team with the talent to compete for the SEC. This is where coaching separates champions from also rans.

.

To be fair.... quite a few open receivers were missed as well.

I agree with you. I guess I interpreted the use of the term make or break differently than you. No way is Butch's job in jeopardy after this year, but this is the year to do something special. That's how I read it.
