Some SEC Coaches See Flaws in UT

But I do expect our opponents will bring 8-9 into the box from disguised run-stopping blitzes...and zone blitzes....Press coverage to keep our receivers from getting off the LOS....Force Dobbs to make quick decisions and beat us with his arm....

This will not be a popular thought but I think it would be good to practice for a QB rotation. If a particular D is giving Dobbs a rough time, throw one of the others in for a change up. He might have some success or at least give Dobbs a chance to watch the D from the sidelines to figure out an angle.

I agree with you. I guess I interpreted the use of the term make or break differently than you. No way is Butch's job in jeopardy after this year, but this is the year to do something special. That's how I read it.

We're definitely in accord there. It all lines up this year for team 120 to do special things.....nobody else has a proven QB in the East unless you count Lambert at UGA and that's a stretch...3 new head coaches with Mason and Stoops still at Vandy and Kentucky respectively. We're talented and experienced across the board. No doubt about it, it should be a special season and if it's not, absent of a large number of season-ending injuries to most of our best/most important players, it'll be incredibly telling of and not good news for Jones. We certainly agree there. Looks like maybe I misunderstood where you were coming from.

Its not a "make or break year for Butch", You're telling that if Butch goes 9-4 again we are firing him?? Please.

No, of course not, he won't be fired. He'll just be 100% exposed. 9-4 will be an incredibly disappointing season.

I don't think it's fair to say we are "just OK at wideout". We obviously have the talent in Josh Malone and Preston Williams. I think it would be more accurate to say "for whatever reason they haven't been able to put it together in the passing game."

More about their performance instead of potential

Speaking on Vanderbilt: "I'm not exaggerating when I say this. Derek Mason is as good a defensive coach as there is in this world." Yeah, okay.

I'd happy to have Mason as the UT DC in a couple years after Vandy sacks him and Shoop takes an HC job somewhere.

Gonna need him to grow a neck first. I think any Power 5 DC should have a legit, functioning neck. It's a pet peeve.

I agree. If he cant win 11 and make it to ATL.....if main guys are healthy....with this roster then we will just be avg to a tad above. I want TN to be great personally

If a HC in the SEC knows as much about UT as most of us, he's paying way too much attention to us & not enough to his own business. He'll have a short ride at his current school

Who knows. But, if you read the quotes above again, you'll see they are doing a lot of generalizing. Each team has 12 opponents to study each year. Better not be ignorant about any of them ... b/c that's what gives a short ride.

Time to put the hay in the barn.

The landscape will most likely never be as favorable than it is right now.

That's the long and short of it.

Never is a long time... Reminds me of some discussions I had about the future of UT football after Peyton played his last game.

Wasn't there a quote from the coaching staff saying of the top 4 most athletic receivers 3 are freshman. If that is the case then we are just "ok" at receiver. Malone disappears in games and Williams was injured/held out of valuable training time last year and unable to really catch up. The truth is this coach was throwing shade at coach Z and our pathetic receiving numbers over the past 3 years. Also funny that we had a WR leave early for the NFL and wasn't drafted.

Other coaches find weaknesses in UT............well DUH! every frigging team has weaknesses, but who has the fewest? what a bunch wasted time to type this article, I usually like Athlon, but please, tell one team that does not have weaknesses, and I call you a liar.

UT is good enough to go undefeated, the schedule is setup pretty good to make a run, and that is about how every team has made it.........favorable schedule......just ask Urban Cryer.

Go Vols!!!

"...as good a defensive coach as there is in the world." per an anonymous SEC coach (and with no exaggeration either).

I hate to admit it but IMO he is as good a D coach as there is. Like Shoop, who is considered as good a D coach as there is, he has taken a very underwhelming defense and made it a top D and in the SEC no less.

Not to mention the immediate difference from when he personally took over was night and day.

I wouldn't say he is the best but he is as good as any I can think of. Enough so I'd be worried having to play a D full of 5*'s coached by him.

My comments on Alabama have as much creditability.

Question at QB: can they pull a rabbit out of their hat again? Don't know but when these guys played LY, they sucked.

Question at RB: strange that Saban didn't play Harris or Scarborough much ly when game was somewhat in doubt. Neither had many meaningful carries all year unlike prior seasons when backups played critical downs.

Question about discipline: a lot of off the field issues there could mean lack of focus by the players.

No, he hasn't. Tennessee had 335 yards rushing vs Vandy last year.

Every team has flaws, including UT, there isn't an unbeatable team in the SEC this year. UT has question marks at wr, and linebacker. UGA has a first year head coach, question marks at rb, qb, and on defense. UF has question marks at qb, wr, oline, and in the secondary. Alabama has question marks at qb and rb.

That was probably a Florida assistant. Wolf had 4 catches for 55 yards against them including that jump pass.

The line about it being make or break for Butch because of some off field issues sounds like something that would be posted here by a rival.

The TEs have been productive blocking IMO so all it factored in...

Yea but we're Tennessee! That's just gona happen vs us.

Look, you don't base a season on 1 game and I'm sure you already know that. Look at their defensive body of work with him as the D coach. Their rankings and how they held good teams to low scores/yardage for the season. Actually they were better than their stats cuz they haven't had ANY offense to go with it the last 2 years.

Watching them the last 2 years with him as D coach, they've been good on that side of the ball. That's not really an opinion, plenty stats to back that up. Figuring in "vandy" talent with poor offense and he's done a great job IMO.
