1. Tennessee had the youngest team in the SEC this year.

2. Tennessee lost its starting quarterback the day before the spring game and got our new starter on campus at the beginning of June

3. Tennessee lost massive production at the runningback spot

4. Despite those losses, Tennessee put up insane numbers on the offensive side of the ball and turned Joey into a superstar and a clear upgrade over Nico.

5. Tennessee's defense was devastated by injuries this year, opening SEC play without its starting rotation in at defensive tackle and cornerback.

6. Tennessee's best linebacker was battling turf toe for most of the season

7. Despite those losses, we have one of the most disruptive defenses in the SEC, at or near the top of the league in turnovers and defensive touchdowns.

8. Despite all of that, we are as we speak 2 missed fields goals away from being a 1 loss football team.

Now I know this was a disappointing season and this team, especially the defense, has frustrated fans to no end. But just thinking it over a little bit, I don't think its time to cut bait on this staff or put Heup on the hot seat just yet. Its clear that change is needed. Specifically, we need:

1. More Depth, especially on defense: The drop off in experience from starters to backups undeniably hurt us this year. Our program doesn't have the depth it needs to weather the storm of a long season. Coaches need to be more aggressive about adding experienced depth pieces in the portal and much more aggressive about knowing when to retain talented players and when to let guys walk. I think we would all trade the 2025 version of Boo Carter for Jakobe Thomas.

2. We have to fix special teams: We need to do something at the kicker spot. Whether thats putting Gilbert through intensive sports therapy or making a change at that position, it cost us in too many situations this year. Getting a reliable kicker is absolutely worth the investment. Its the difference between a playoff run and playing in the Citrus bowl this year. Surely Danny can do the math on that one. Our kick return game was also a massive disappointment and punting is subpar. In an era of broad parity in the sport, the hidden yardage of special teams is more critical than ever.

3. Stay the course on Offense. The staff saw the problems last year and fixed them, leading to one of the best attacks in the SEC. With an offense this good, we'll always have a chance.

In short, I think if we can keep this team together and keep the fans together, this season, while disappointing, will leave us in a strong position to make a run in the next few years as our players get more experince. Edwin Spillman and Edrees Farooq took their lumps this year, but I believe they are both going to be great players for us! Go big orange!

Everyone is frustrated rt now - very justifiable. Most said 9-3 or 8-4 preseason. We saw what we had with Joey and the receivers so naturally expectations increased to playoff or bust.

The Defense has been putrid - poor coaching- which is surprising. But, the D showed up vs. Oklahoma. Our offense choked vs. Bama and Oklahoma while Joey reverted back to App st last Saturday.

I think Heup has us on the rt track. He must keep this class together. The staff is aware We are gonna lose the kid who visited Ohio state. But, we must keep everyone else we want.

Portal - spend the $$$ on safety, DL, LB, and D linemen. Also, upgrade in coaching. Banks and Martinez must go. Heup knows it’s an inside.

We must have a stout D to go 10-2 next year.

This is a very well, thought out, assessment of our team. But you have to know that there's no place for logic in this looney bin :) :) :) :) :),

Get out of here with your logic. Don’t you know that Urban Meyer, Gruden, Saban, and a few NFL coaches are beating down the door to coach at Tennessee right now? Fire HOO-PUL!

OP, I think your post is very well written and fact-based. It goes give me some measure of hope. I agree with most if not all of your bullets.

However,....

We can't analyze our Vols in a vacuum. Other teams with a new coach or a 10-year veteran suffer from some of the same misfortunes in pre/during season. Why do they have more depth and UT is the "youngest team in the SEC"? We're in year 5 with CJH. YEAR 5. A quick Google search reveals that many elite coaches (making slightly less than, same or slightly more than) CJH, have at least won their conference by now or played for it in the championship game. Some have won it all.

Very good post. To use an automotive analogy, it just seems that somewhere in the 12-cylinder engine that is Vols football, there is a piston not firing, wire crisscrossed, clogged hose, etc. which doesn't account for your any of your items above. I'm not sure what it is.

Great summary, OP. Yes, we are frustrated, but we need to recognize that the SEC is a tough place to play, and there is little margin for error. I agree with the need to be more aggressive in the portal, but there is only so much money to go around.

Nonsense, fire the entire staff and start over. We should win every game by 60 points and be national champions by now.

There are some nuances you are missing by looking at the just the totals in the last 5 years.

CSS made CFP 2 out of 4 years and has a record of 2-2 in CFP with a high of CFP Semi-Finals '24, CFP in '23 & '24
CJH made CFP 1 out of 4 years and has a record of 0-1 in CFP, CFP in '24

CSS has a record of 14-13 (0.519) vs Top 25 teams, since 2023 CSS has a record of 12-6 (0.667) vs Top 25 teams
CJH has a record of 10-13 (0.435) vs Top 25 teams, since 2023 CJH has a record of 4-8 (0.333) vs Top 25 teams

Although totals are similar there is a definite disparity of progress since '23. Hence why TX is much more optimistic than TN at this point.

Nuance cuts both ways though. Which one stepped into the tougher situation? Which one lost the starting QB in the Spring and has played without the top 2 CBs all year? I agree we need to see improvement, especially on D, and I agree with your take that the last 2 years is why some are higher on Sark, plus he just has more overall experience. The whole point was that we need to be a little more patient and forgiving with Heupel. Let’s see what he does from here.

How many have won the SEC? Winning the ACC, Big 12 or whatever isn’t the same.

Heupel in no way should even be on a hot seat, much less canned. That’s just silly stuff.

He has navigated the team’s deficiencies fairly well….Nico/Joey, injuries etc. He seems to excel in this department.

My big gripe, and this one IMO is not defensible, and that is his refusal to address his own deficiencies, liabilities, and blind spots. And he has some real doozies to get a handle on, starting with the clock, and situational play calling, and ending with his refusal to shake up the staff when needed.

Thank you for this. I have been shocked by Vol's fans. Did they forget about 2017? Heupel has us back in the conversation and this year does seem cursed. Preseason was chaos which Heup handled very well and honestly got us a better QB in the deal. Our two best defensive guys get injured. Our normally reliable kicker misses against UGA. We dominate the time of possession against Oklahoma but can't seem to get points on the board. Yes, we looked like absolute garbage against Bama so no excuses there but they have more depth than we do which is changing every year.
