Some Perspective

I’m aware.
Random dipsticks get crushes on me all the time. You’re just the latest, although less intelligent than the normal stalker.
We’ve interacted in two threads, I think. Something tells me that a guy with 100,000 posts has been in more than that. I skim the board. I respond to the more ridiculous things I see. Congratulations, you got noticed twice. Maybe the conversations got you a few likes. Hope it improves your life.

Like I said, you have a crush. And that’s ok but I have friends already so I don’t have a need for a follower right now.

It’s not you. It’s me.

Steve Sarkisian:
5 years at Texas
Took over a 7–3 team with deep NIL pockets
45–19 overall record
→ “Top-5 coach”

Josh Heupel:
5 years at Tennessee
Took over a 3–7 team with scholarship limitations
43–18 overall record
→ “Not good enough”

Our fan base has some fans that need a reality check.
Yeah but Sarkisian is a former alcoholic so it makes for a better story, the underdog. Heupel has just been a good citizen all along, you get no points for that in this world.,

now add Brian Kelly to that list.

also tell me what would happen to Kellen Deboer if he had that record after 5 years at Bama.

different programs have different expectations.

OP, I think your post is very well written and fact-based. It goes give me some measure of hope. I agree with most if not all of your bullets.

However,....

We can't analyze our Vols in a vacuum. Other teams with a new coach or a 10-year veteran suffer from some of the same misfortunes in pre/during season. Why do they have more depth and UT is the "youngest team in the SEC"? We're in year 5 with CJH. YEAR 5. A quick Google search reveals that many elite coaches (making slightly less than, same or slightly more than) CJH, have at least won their conference by now or played for it in the championship game. Some have won it all.

Very good post. To use an automotive analogy, it just seems that somewhere in the 12-cylinder engine that is Vols football, there is a piston not firing, wire crisscrossed, clogged hose, etc. which doesn't account for your any of your items above. I'm not sure what it is.
Part of the reason we (and some others) have so much youth this year is the impact of the free COVID year and NIL money…both of those allowed us and others to have an older, more experienced roster - especially along both lines. This is the last year of having players who got a free COVID year (we have 2) so that’s gone but NIL and the transfer portal both help players stay in college longer vs taking their shot at the NFL after their third year.

As to Heupel not winning a championship in year five - we’d all like to have seen that happen but things didn’t line up in our favor…Fulmer won his first championship in his fifth year but Majors didn’t win his first until his 9th year…in todays climate Majors would have been fired after 4 seasons.

Heupel is pretty safe right now but like all coaches, his record will determine his longevity. Injuries, youth and transfer losses can be used to explain this as a rebuilding year but our goal is to build a program that reloads vs rebuilds.
