So what happens when we stink next year.

Personally, I think Cuonzo knows enough about basketball to be a good coach. Where he needs to step it up is in recruiting. Have you considered that some of our current players may not be as good as what you need to win the SEC?

As far as next year, I don't think we will miss McRae, Maymon, or Barton. The real key is whether Stokes comes back.

Shi te happens! Most teams have to rebuild every 3-4 seasons(unless you're Kentucky and you have to rebuild every season).

Wasn't the original title of this thread "What happens when we don't make the ncaa tourney for the third straight year?"

Year one we were picked 11th in the conference. We finished 2nd. Year 2 we were without Maymon and still won 20 games and landed a five star recruit. Oh and we were one team away from being in the tournament. 290 other teams wished they were as close. This year we did have some bad losses but Memorial and luck played a role in that. We made it to the Sweet Sixteen and some good halftime adjustments almost had us in the Elite Eight.

Why are you so sure next year is lost?

I do not expect next year to be lost. I am happy we made it to the sweet 16. If you are happy to win 20 a year, just miss the NCAA last year and finish 4th in the SEC this year behind Georgia, then I am happy for you. Happy, Happy, Happy. For me, I just want us to be better than that. Maybe we will, we'll see.

If we make a big financial commitment to Martin, we better be at 22-24 wins and talking about seeding in late February. Otherwise, things will be hairier than a Bama football player's Momma's mustache.

Never going to happen. We won't be in the vicinity of the bubble next year. Would love to eat crow on this one.

My initial response was to BOT. I was agreeing with him, and saying it wasn't even a miracle because we simply beat a bunch of nobodies.

And how is our recruiting looking this year and next year. he has shown no ability to recruit at a level necessary to compete for conference championships. Not saying it is impossible, simply saying there is no evidence presently available that he can. A single 5 star last year can't outweigh our current 50th ranked class, behind such luminaries as UTEP, Utah, Bama, Vandy and you guessed it, Marquette.

We just came off a Sweet 16 (should have been Elite 8 if not for poor officiating) and we STILL have the "Farr Counzo" negavols infecting us with their stupidity.

Didn't you hear? The Sweet 16 run isn't legitimate because we didn't beat Florida, Arizona, and the Miami Heat to get there.

(Of course these same people never say anything about the lucky draw we got in our Elite Eight run.)

We got a 2-round bye in the SECT but you're bent GA finished ahead of us.

umm..okay

I for one am supportive of both, but do I have to be happy being a mid level SEC team that is constantly on the bubble, compete hard (or not) for the NIT and maybe make an occasional NCAA run? Should I be content with CCM chastising me as a fan when I want the team to evolve into an elite program, but get upset when the team under performs and remains mediocre?

All I want is for my Vols to be a top SEC program, win enough to be a fixture in the big dance, be a top 10 or 15 program and fill TBA with energized and happy fans. Maybe CCM found the key to start a winning trend with our finish this season. I sure hope so, but the proof is yet to come. The question is....am I expecting too much?

I don't think that is asking for too much; I wouldn't want a coach who isn't striving to be an elite program.

It looks like CCM will be our coach for the forseeable future. He's still young - I'm hoping he realizes that he can improve himself as a coach. If that means hiring an experienced assistant coach, do it. If that means studying more film, do it. If that means stepping out of his comfort zone and demanding more of his players and working the officials during games, do it.

I don't think anyone was HAPPY. Simply thinking a dose of realism and less "legions of the miserable" attitude is in order.

Devoe went to the tourney 6 out of 11 years

DeVoe went every year for 5 years, then the shot clock came and DeVoe stopped for 5 years in a row. Overall he went 10 times in 31 seasons, so about 1 out of ever 3 years.

Instead of getting rid of Cuonzo and collecting 1.3 million it looks like we are probably gonna give him an extension. What happens next year when we go to the NIT or worse. We will probably get rid of him anyway but instead will pay a big buyout. This may be one of the dumbest moves in Tennessee history. :banghead2:

Meanwhile, Pearl will be at the Dance with Auburn..

many were under a different format. No different than people who use tourney results to claim Pearl was clearly superior to Mears

Pearl will be lucky to have Auburn at the NIT the next few seasons. Auburn sucks and has been hit by NCAA probation. CBP will not do as good at AU as he did at UT.

We won't suck next year.

(1) Martin returns.

(2) Stokes may sneak in to the late 2nd round of the draft, so he will return for his senior year and improve his draft status.

(3) Richardson will improve ALOT over the summer and will replace McRae, as a leader

(4) The foward from TSU will transfer to U.T. and he will fill in where Maymon was.

(5) Team has gotten a taste of the NCAA & of the Sweet 16 and will be hungry for more, so they will play more disciplined and have better results.

(6) thompson will shine because he will be the starter and not coming off of the bench.

(7) Hubbs will be healthy.....
I'm amazed at how few realize this.
With a consistent PG that actually scores and an improved front court with Rhett we could be pretty damn good by mid season.

That's depending on a perfect storm and everything going right. How often has that happened to UT basketball?

Won't happen for at least 3 years, if it ever happens. He's not inheriting another Chris Lofton.

I suppose he had Lofton for all 462 games he's won. I have no idea how on earth anyone can doubt his coaching. He's won 20+ games in 17 of 19 years as a head coach. He has a 76% career winning percentage in those 19 seasons.

It's fine if you want to hate him, but I don't understand the doubting his ability when we've saw it up close and personal.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'd say AU will be better than UT two years from now. Hell, possibly even next year.

is this because Bruce was always known to be an outstanding recruiter?

You know what I don't understand? Why Bruce Pearl is continually brought up in threads having nothing to do with him. The level of infatuation that some people around here have for him is truly disturbing.
