So we're 6-4....

If you want to argue that, it's very possible that a couple plays result in losses against South Carolina and Georgia.

It's almost like the team is currently in riding that fine line of being competitive in every game, but sitting at the threshold of the next level. Perhaps that thing I said about next year being even better is like...a real possibility.

Or are you, a fan, going to explain again why Tennessee isn't going to be good enough?

I'm not angry he's coach. I was angry Dooley was coach.

Butch just can't win the big games.

You've made it very clear endless times that you're a buTch hater but you've also made it very clear that you know nothing about college football and how a really good program is built from the ashes of nothing up to a Championship level.

FYI Mr Know nothing at all...buTch has ONLY 2 recruiting classes that are all his since the 1st class was CDD and buTch and his staff adding what they could really fast before NSD.

The 2 real buTch classes are right now Sophs and true freshmen and lots of them have been well coached up fast and are standing tall and damn near beat Oklahoma, FloriDUHHH and alaBummer, all of which are ranked in the top 10 right now kid.

Some of our good true freshmen like Boulware and Drew Richmond are redshirting, great recruiting is the only thing that allows a team rising from the ashes to finally redshirt some really good, highly ranked guys coming out of high school.

Yes, we had a chance to Win 3 games against what are now top 10 teams and that is solid PROOF of good progress of our program.

HELL YES, it hurts like hell to be so close to being a top 10 or better team but all the realists knew we still had O line problems and we lost some starting O linemen too and losing Maggitt was a huge loss when the heart of our D is suddenly gone for the season.

Several of our WR's have been hurt and that hurt us bad too plus Piggbeing a moron and throwing his football career away as our top WR.

Realistic with solid football knowledge predicted in the Summer that we should be a 8 win team this year and we're right on track for that which IS progress from last year and very good considering how many top 10 teams we almost beat.

I haven't ignored you kid because I like to laugh at you making a complete Idiot of yourself on here.

I really look forward to what you have to say next season and the year after when buTch has 3 and 4 full classes of his recruits on the hill.

I'd damn sure like to be undefeated and ranked # 1 in the country but we're just not there yet with really good backups for depth.

Have a great day wylo, LMAO @ you kid!

The reason is clear. Butch is a choke artist. He blows double digit leads with regularity. Anyone can see that, fan or not.

I can see this thing going either way, 8-4 with a possible trip to Tampa and playing a quality opponent, or 6-6 and going to Memphis for a lack luster bowl game. Of course, we could end up somewhere in between.

But I am worried about the backbone of this team and the coaching staff with all of the injuries and some of the perceived off the field issues. Not sure how they will react to a ramped up Missouri team and a Vandy team that will be playing their bowl game in Neyland in a couple of weeks.

Butch's best coaching job to determine the outcome of his program has to start this week. I think 7-5 is treading water and 6-6 is a total failure for where this program needs to be.

After this season the rape trials will begin and the negative pub will start hitting this program again. He really needs that 8-4 and a good bowl win to demonstrate we are on the way up.

If we dominate in every remaining game and beat a quality bowl opponent, then possibly. But IDT it's a given. JMO, though.

You people put way too much emphasis on "dominating." The only game that will matter in that respect is the bowl game. And, if we play a quality opponent like Michigan, then any margin of victory will impress the voters. If it is a lesser opponent, then a dominating performance could help.

But, the voters will not be going back to check margin of victory over North Texas or Mizzou. They will look at our final record and the result of our bowl game. If we are 9-4 out of the SEC, then we most likely end up in the Top-25. I will agree that nothing is a given, but we most likely get there.

Is he a choke artist because arguably the best team in football finally broke through against us? Or because 3 defensive backs took atrocious angles on a 4th down play? Perhaps it's just the way the game goes, and support your team going into next year, when you can expect even better results?

He's a choke artist because he blows double digit leads at alarming rates.

Tennessee has had two score leads in eight games this season. The opponent has erased that deficit in four games. The other four are Toledo, Western Carolina, Kentucky, and North Texas.

If they play hard these last two games, I think bowl committees are going to see this:

They went 8-4... who'd they lose to?
#1 team in Big12, #1 team in SEC, #1 team in SEC East, #2 team in SEC West... by a combined 17 points...

Say what you will, but I still think we usually have too hard of a schedule.

Who were those teams' opponents? Perhaps it's less blowing a lead and more playing very good opponents and being better for a substantial amount of the game, but just not quite the entirety.

I know you won't accept that as even possible, though.

You can look at this glass half full or half empty and both make a whole lot of sense.

Hall full

Tennessee has only lost games to good teams and could have won each of them. With a little bit of luck or the right bounce of the ball, Tennessee could be 9-1 or 10-0 all with a pretty young football team. Tennessee was able to run the ball well for the first time in years.

Half empty

Tennessee found ways to lose. Again. You can put lipstick on the pig all you want, but they pulled defeat out of the jaws of victory. Sometimes in mind numbing fashion because of highly questionable coaching decisions. Worse still, a team that Tennessee hates that most thought would be lucky to be bowl eligible is sitting where Tennessee could be. In addition, the QB still can't throw the football and WR talent has been completely wasted

Your last sentence is what really hurts me. We cant get those guys the ball period.

Tennessee completely choked at least two games away. That will always be the case, even if Oklahoma and Florida share the national title this year. It can be forgiven, but he has to earn it.

Is Butch Jones the reason 3 defensive backs took a bad angle on the 4th down play? Is Butch Jones the reason Baker Mayfield seemed to have vaseline on his legs to the point he kept slipping out of sacks? The game went our way early and not late. The team will be better.

I wish the negavols would switch over to Alabama fans. We are 17 points from being undefeated. We played the 2nd hardest schedule in the nation. If we played Ohio States schedule, we could be undefeated too. Anybody that doesn't see how good of a job CBJ is doing is blind. I think some just don't want to see it. They didn't want to hire him from the beginning. They have some illusion that all the greatest coaches in the country were fighting each other to get the great job at UT, with all the talent we had. CBJ will take us to the playoffs next year, but it will still not be good enough.

Funny how games tend to do go that way under Butch. I guess our depth just kept catching up with us every fourth down against Florida and not at all in between. I'm sure play calling had nothing to do with that second to last offensive series against Florida, and the poor clock management was probably just poor execution in disguise. Butch is just super unlucky.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume this is satire.

In all seriousness, there isn't a program in our conference I'm more wary of in the near future, outside of Tuscaloosa, then yours.

Your trajectory is only going up, WAY up...We're gonna run the East, just like old times...We're gonna be thorns in each other's sides, and pain in each other's asses for years to come.

we be kicking some western heinie

FWIW...I thought 9-3 was the ceiling and 8-4 was expected; anything less will be rather disappointing. Win out and I'm satisfied with the season and our progress. If we go 7-5 I'll feel like we underachieved somewhat but not ready to jump off a bridge.

High expectations for next year. I think the pressure will be real. I just hope those kids don't feel it as much as the fans and coaches will/should.

So, in review......

a) We've beaten UGA and nearly no one saw that coming....

b) We're currently 6-4 and practically no one thought we'd be here at this point in the season....

c) We lost in OT to Oklahoma which is currently 9-1 and just beat #6 Baylor and now ranked #7 in the nation

d) We lost to UF in the last minute of the game and UF is now #1 in the SEC East and sitting at 9-1 and ranked #8 in the nation

e) We lost to Bama (late in the game) which is also 9-1, ranked #1 in the SEC West and ranked #3 in the nation

f) We got spanked against Ark - but that team is re-surging big-time and just beat a top-10 LSU team and previously beat a ranked Ole Miss team

Now I'm not promoting "moral victory U" but we're closer than we think (or at least some think). We may have stunk up the locker room with N Texas, but considering the competition thus far and the 2 SEC games to play.....it should have been somewhat expected.

If we win out with broken streaks over UGA and MZ and end at 8-4 with a nice bowl game, I think had this scenario above been placed in everyone's crystal ball on August 1st, there would have been more smiles than frowns in VN.

Blast away if you will...

Who didn't think we would be 8-4 this year? The schedule was set up for a minimum of eight wins just like Dooley's 2012 schedule. That was the consensus projection. Using DAJ's recruiting analysis vs the schedule we should be 9-3. The teams we lost to would not be #7 and #8 if we had beaten them and held on to double digit leads in the 4th quarter. This isn't blasting away but back to back top five classes usually leads to winning seasons. This season is about at the bottom of possible outcomes based on the talent we have vs our competition. The only frustrating part is looking at how special this season could have been.

OP your post is very solid. Except we didnt get spanked by Arkansas.

I honestly predicted 9-3 this year. I was wrong.

You were about right and that was my prediction as well. We didn't get spanked by Arkansas looking at the final score but they dominated the contest in the second half and I believe we had a hangover from the Florida loss.
