So we're 6-4....

I'm not angry he's coach. I was angry Dooley was coach.

Butch just can't win the big games.

Why make false statements like that if you're a Tennessee fan? Last year on the road in Columbia was a big game. The team that we absolutely stomped in the gator bowl last year is 10-0 and ranked 6 in the country. I could go on. There are so many facts in your way that your post is just silly.

Most people projected 8-4 or 9-3 with big time players like Maggit, Gaulden, Robertson, Jackson, and North still in the lineup or playing in a significant compacity. I guarantee no one would have said those records if they knew those players wouldn't be playing at all this year. Our losses came against 3 teams with one loss and a team that matches up with us perfectly. Not sure why everyone is down, it's like people would have been more excited if OU and Bama blew us out because it would prove we aren't there yet

But there's also no reason to act like a spoiled little brats regarding the coach. The current coach has done what even Fulmer never did: built a roster from scratch. He's fixed the trash we became (which started under that coach). Get your damn head out of the damn clouds. Be happy that the team's trajectory is steadily going upward. We're a stock that everyone wants to buy. You'd think after all of us went through such horrible times that you'd be able to appreciate substantial and steady improvement, development, and results on the field.

The argument isn't about whether he makes things better. The argument is whether or not he can win championships. Tennessee can and should do better than Butch Jones.

I had predicted 8-2 at this point preseason. I thought Ark and Bama would beat us, but I truly did not see OU or UF beating us. I think a lot of people were in that boat and that's why all the raging about those two losses, both of which were still inexcusable. By the time of the Ark game I assumed we would beat them, but we came out totally flat. Had Berry not run back the opening kick they would have completely embarrassed us.

We jumped out 14-0 and 17-7 in the Arky game. One thing we did not do is come out flat. Do we have a drug problem on VN?

Get real.

I don't get it either, especially after YEARS in the wilderness. Butch has made us better every year and I fully expect next year will continue that trend.

We do not yet have a championship caliber roster. Next year we might if we can catch some breaks.

Interesting. Why do you think we should and can do better, if we really never have? We hired a reputed elite coach only once - Johnny Majors. And the only reason we got him is because he played here. And all this elite coach did was dilly dally around for 9 years before he got the fans really excited for a little while. Battle was a 28 year old kid when we hired him. Kiffin was a 33 year old proven loser when we hired him. Dooley - no need to explain that. Fulmer was an insider that had no head coaching credentials when he was hired. You all are living in a dream world. There are only a few elite coaches out there. They aren't coming here. Like most other programs that aren't OSU, Bama, ND or USCw, we are stuck looking for diamonds in the rough. You find those once in a blue moon.

And we should be 8-2 right now. And "nobody thought we'd be 6-4 right now"....lol.
KB way back before the season started I liked one of your posts about this year's record and to paraphrase it went some thing like this, 8-4 is where we should be and anything better is beyond expectations, 7-5 is under performing, 6-6 or less is unacceptable. I agreed then and now as well.

because elite athletes from Tennessee never leave for Florida State or USC or Notre Dame or Alabama or Ole Miss or Georgia
Saw a >300 lb kid out of Memphis starting on Auburn's OL this weekend to assist if this was blue font or shade if not.

There is no reason to think that Butch Jones can't add 2 more wins next year, be 11-1, and be in the SEC Championship game with the ability to go to the Playoff.

Vols fans, though, will be the first ones to tell you that Tennessee can't.

So, in review......

a) We've beaten UGA and nearly no one saw that coming....

b) We're currently 6-4 and practically no one thought we'd be here at this point in the season....

c) We lost in OT to Oklahoma which is currently 9-1 and just beat #6 Baylor and now ranked #7 in the nation

d) We lost to UF in the last minute of the game and UF is now #1 in the SEC East and sitting at 9-1 and ranked #8 in the nation

e) We lost to Bama (late in the game) which is also 9-1, ranked #1 in the SEC West and ranked #3 in the nation

f) We got spanked against Ark - but that team is re-surging big-time and just beat a top-10 LSU team and previously beat a ranked Ole Miss team

Now I'm not promoting "moral victory U" but we're closer than we think (or at least some think). We may have stunk up the locker room with N Texas, but considering the competition thus far and the 2 SEC games to play.....it should have been somewhat expected.

If we win out with broken streaks over UGA and MZ and end at 8-4 with a nice bowl game, I think had this scenario above been placed in everyone's crystal ball on August 1st, there would have been more smiles than frowns in VN.

Blast away if you will...

One of the best analytical posts of the season, 74. Thanks and well-said, my friend....

But, we're not undefeated and the UGA game doesn't count this year. Debord is old. Dobbs can't throw. We're playing xxxx on the O-line instead of xxxx. Butch is too conservative. Our team plays down to opponents. Ugly wins.

/end thread

Got in before the negavols...

I wish we all really knew if it is truly Butch or Debored that is so damn conservative/unimaginative.

There have been many years when a win would cure most problems but now we sound like Bama fans when we don't blow an opponent out. Take the damn win and relish and revel in it,and be thankful it's not an L. Playing down to an opponent is easy as we saw this past weekend, but this team knows they can win now as where before they didn't before. We will take care of business Sat, and I'm willing to bet we get the W. If it's ugly I don't care. We don't have to worry about style points, just wins. Take care of the wins and the bowl execs will take notice as we as a fan base travel well, and they know tickets will sell.

We could be ranked preseason next year. We have two unranked opponents left on the schedule, and we'll probably play an unranked bowl opponent, so ending the year ranked is a long shot, IMO.

Even those programs you listed are almost always forced to look for diamonds in the rough. The Saban/Meyer/Harbaugh type hires have little to nothing to do with prestige and mostly just boil down lucky timing.

That said, Tennessee can and should do better than Butch. He's just not very good. Lying about it won't make it better.

No reason? We're 6-4 having played one team that had a clear talent advantage.

There's no reason to think that 9 times out of 10, our DB takes a better angle against Florida on 4th down. There's no reason to think that our defensive line can grasp Baker Mayfield's legs a little tighter. Yeah, it's actually possible that a play or two could go slightly different that would positively impact games we've lost. Acting like that's not the case shows that you don't believe our players could execute like...2 plays better.

If you want to argue that, it's very possible that a couple plays result in losses against South Carolina and Georgia.
