Smokies Stadium

You sure about that? Randy Boyd is the President of UT and also owns the Smokies.
I agree that this likely wasn’t Danny’s call. Regarding Boyd, he’s also a billionaire and this one game meant absolutely nothing to him from a financial perspective. It was a good decision for UT to grow their fan base and obtain more exposure. Ultimately, UT will lose more games this season but hopefully peak during tourney time. If they do it again next year, my preference would be treat it like a normal mid week game and use metal bats. No need to deviate...

Are you more offended that Boyd may have made a buck off the game than anything else? Is that why the animosity to playing the game in this park?
Uhh… that is textbook conflict of interest! And the fact that this game shouldnt be played in the middle of the season. If we played Virginia tech in a mid week game in Bristol or something then fine. Not TTU 20 min away from our own ball park

You seem to have the mentality that this game harmed UT because they lost. My point was they are going to lose several more games. This isn’t 1998 Vols football.
Losses count in all sports but this one comes in a game that should have been played in our own park

College teams play neutral site games all the time. Vanderbilt played Lipscomb at the Sounds stadium in Nashville several weeks ago. Neither the stadium or wood bats are why we lost. TTU was simply better tonight. It happens. It's called baseball.

Like you golfballs, but you're wrong on this one. Getting a win for the record in our park vs playing a team in a neutral park isn't comparable. If we can't beat TTU in a neutral park, shame on us. Baseball is like basketball, it all depends on when you get hot. Losing well played games here and there won't kill us

We played TTU in our own park earlier this season - and they played us close in that one until it was canceled due to weather,

The Smokies Stadium neutral site game was scheduled awhile back. TTU was the better team last night and won the game. Credit to them. It was a great environment last night that was good for the state.

Our guys were going to take a loss at some point. It’s baseball. Any team can and will have an off night. Silver lining is that this loss came in a midweek non conference game. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter much especially if the guys use it as a learning experience and have a sharper focus to get ready for Bama this weekend.

I can guarantee you that TV had a plan when he scheduled game. He went to Western Carolina last year to be in a hostile environment. I don’t know exactly what his plan was for last night but the fact that we played in front of that many people in a neutral stadium was good. I have a feeling we are going to look back on last night and say it was a pivotal point in the season. Great wake up call for guys.

Yeah I’m not taking issue w the fact we lost. It will happen. I don’t like playing this gimmicky game in the middle of the season. Like an exhibition game except one that counts.

All these replies and nobody has touched on my only complaint of the night- the parking! I should say, the lack of it. This must have been a significantly larger crowd than they've ever had up there. Took well into the 3rd for the stadium to fill up due to people waiting in line to get in the parking lot. Buddy of mine had to come late and had to walk one mile to get to the stadium :D

As for the game itself, we played it like we wanted to get the pitchers some work. Blade looked like the Blade of last year and he goes to the showers after the first inning. If we were going to win it would need to be with the bats and it just didn't happen. If V is happy with the work the pitchers got I guess that's what matters in the long run. Dread the panic if Alabama beats us this weekend. They are playing really well right now, I bet they get one of them.

I think it was the largest crowd ever at Smokies Stadium at over 8K, That’s incredible for a Tuesday night midweek game.

I have to admit, I was one of the ones caught in traffic, but only missed the first inning. Coming to the stadium on I-40 westbound, I was surprised when traffic was stopped about 1/2 mile short of the Sevierville exit. I initially thought there was a traffic accident. It took about 30 minutes to go less than 1/2 mile. It was a very dangerous situation(eastbound exit had the same issue). Very surprised that they aren't equipped to handle this crowd. Very poor planning, and as I said, it created a terribly dangerous situation on the interstate. I must say, the police were doing their best getting pedestrian traffic across the highway, and getting the parking lot emptied.

If it hadn't been for waze bailing me out I would have missed those three innings. It routed us south toward Sevierville and the we looped around an came in on Dumplin Valley like we were coming from Jeff county. Quite a scene. I still think it was worth it. Thousands of people that can't get in LNS got a chance to see the Vols when they otherwise wouldn't.

Are you saying we wouldn’t have lost if we played in LNS? Because a loss to TT in LNS would have hurt us more. I could understand an argument against using wooden bats, but that part doesn’t seem to be part of your beef.

Nope.......we will play there again at some point. CTV likes to cover the area when it comes to games which is why we played 2 fall games away, Chattanooga and Memphis area.

I think it’s great community outreach by him. It makes the team more accessible for fans not able to get LNS during the season.

I'm from Johnson City and attended last night because it was closer and I could actually get a ticket. Also had it been played in Knoxville I couldn't have gotten there by game time. Had we blown out TTU like everyone thought we would it would have been dubbed a huge success.

Next time, we have to make Tennessee Tech promise not to throw curve balls. Someone get that in writing.

If they refuse, we could play Pellissippi State.

We may have, especially w that kind of plate discipline. Who's to say though. Moreso it's the combination of the two. An exhibition game played in the middle of the season. Also, a loss to any mid-week team is going to hurt us more at home, that's not really an argument IMO to play more of them at neutral sites. And one 20 min away. I don't mind at all playing teams at their own parks like we did w WCU last year. If we want to play in front of fans in the tri-cities area then play a game at ETSU. And not w wood bats. Lol
