Simms upset according to Rucker

I think it is weak to attack Simms the way people are attacking him in this thread. I think Bray won the starting job today - mostly because the coaches were waiting on him to win it (a la EA in 2005 from RC).

I know timing has a lot to do with this, but if and when Bray starts Homecoming, Simms will have been used as a human shock absorber this entire season and basically ZERO glory for it. It wasn't his fault we lost to LSU. It wasn't really his fault we lost today.

It is not fair to pile on Simms. He has put it on the line for his team this season, and he's about to get benched for the four winnable games. AND WE STILL MAY NEED HIM!

Great post Gibbs.

We will still need Simms. I think Bray also contributed to the loss yesterday with the pick six. This season boils down to keeping the KY streak alive and not losing to Vandy. Anything else is just gravy as far as this season goes.

The difference is Bray has had about 3 quarters of playing time in college football. Simms is a 4th year junior who's been giving us 12 pts a game in SEC play and has had a chance to get better.... but hasn't. He transferred from Louisville after crying about PT and now he's doing it here.

Bray is playing backyard football right now about as well as Simms is playing in the "system". Once Bray gets more game film of himself, he will be hands-down better than Simms.

Too much of a talent gap between those too and it's very visible.

For the record: Simms has made some nice plays for us. Just nothing that really scares our upcoming opponents.

I'm not saying he's the worst QB we've ever had. Don't get it twisted.

Rick Clausen..... :shakehead:

Glad he is upset, he should be, I would be if got benched. He is a gamer and plays hard with heart. He just doesn't have the skill needed at this level. The line is young and doesn't block very well. He is at fault for alot of the sacks too, holds the ball way to long looking at the same receiver hoping he gets open( It's called Progressions Simms) Daddy didn't teach him that part. He needs to get rid of it or learn to scramble a little bit would help rather than just lay down when they get near him.

this is where i kinda disagree. IMO, Simms is set in his ways and will continue to stay the same and not improve on arm strength, throwing motion, etc. but bray can only get better and better

If Bray can't get it done, and we need Simms for anything other than to relieve Bray when we have a big lead so he doesn't get hurt, then we won't go 6-6 and make a bowl IMO.

Denarius Moore’s Response:
“Actually, (Bray) came to the wide receivers and told us to calm down and keep our heads in before we actually had time to talk to him. That right there lets me know his head was still in the game. I think it probably is pretty rare for a freshman. He came in with confidence and then he also kept his head in the game. I was real proud of him for it.”

Bray’s Response:
“I went to the receivers, the running backs and the line and said, ‘Guys, don't worry about it.' It's my fault. We're going to move on from here and let's put a drive together.”

Bray on Simms:
"I thought (Matt) Simms was doing great. He was moving the ball downfield, making the right reads. I was fine with sticking with Simms as long as he was doing a good job."

Simms’ Response:
“It's unfortunate that they took me out. I feel like I played really well. I feel like I could have made all those throws because we had guys wide-open down the middle of the field. So I feel like I'm a good enough quarterback to make those plays and I'm just a little upset that I got taken out like that.”

More from Simms:
“Nothing much I can do about getting hit in the back and the guy stripping the ball from me. That's one of the better defensive lines in the conference and you know, hey, if you get hit a lot, sometimes the ball comes out. Other than that, I thought I played really well. Didn't turn the ball over besides those. It wasn't like I dropped back and threw it to the other team.”

Simms Last Week after Alabama:
"They [the coaches] stayed true to their plan, and I respect that, and I thank them for being honest with me, but at the same time those drives right there, I feel like I need to be out there, because I feel like I'm missing out on plays that could have been made or penalties that could have been avoided.”

Why do some idiots feel like they need to destroy Simms to promote Bray?

I favor starting Bray too, but jeering and tearing apart Simms with feigned indignance of his character is dishonest crap. Simms is a competitor - that's why he got this far. He made a huge committment and has worked his butt off. He's taken wicked physical and mental punishment through the worst of the season and is understandably frustrated at seeing the rug jerked out from under him. He is just a kid and his comments showed his frustration as he perceives his committment to Tennessee going down the toilet. Feigning indignance with Simms comments in frustration is dishonest crap.

You people who stand on the sidelines attacking his character trying are just trying to tear him down to build up Bray. That's how schoolyard bullies and immature jerks behave.

Anyone understanding of human nature and an ounce of honesty should cut Simms slack.

the guy is a True Freshman and he already gets it.

That is what a Leader does.

Simms should be upset. If he wasnt I would not want him on our team. Now he should not use the media to vocalize it though. He gives us just as much a chance to win as bray therefore bray should start because he is going to get better with playing time. We are not gonna go to a bcs game next year with him being a sr. If simms was as good as cam newton then yeah u play him but unfortunately he is not

Disagree. This team should resolve to win out. They're good enough to do it, if they eliminate only a half-dozen mistakes in each hour of play. I'm sure that Dooley has emphasized this to them, so maybe they are just not smart enough to get it or ready enough to do it. But I think they are. All mood-making cool aid aside, winning every game left is something they CAN DO.

I never once attempted to build Bray up. I'll let the coaches decide who plays. Simms damaged his reputation by making the snarky remarks to the media far more than any message board poster could do. Do I think he is an evil person? No. He is gutsy and tough. But if you think that players will just shrug comments like that off where the world can see them, then you haven't spent a lot of time in a locker room with a team that is struggling. I wish the best for Simms and Bray. My main point is that you don't air team business in public especially when you are struggling. You don't make yourself look better. You make yourself look like a spoiled selfish player whether it's true or not.

Most of the comments have referred to his shortcomings physically and his actions, not his character. If he wants to be upset about being replaced, that's okay with me, but shut up and perform better next time. Crying to the media does not gain respect from the team or staff.

He has done an admirable job, but his skills are lacking for the SEC. Bray has shown more ability in his limited opportunities and if you can not recognize that, then you have a problem.

GO VOLS!!

Simms isn't a teenager; he's a 22-year-old adult who has been around football and the media his entire life. Even high school quarterbacks know not to air their grievances in the media like Simms has done two weeks in a row.

Calling out his coaches, belittling his teammates and putting himself above his team is embarrassing to Tennessee. Did you see Stephen Garcia do that when Spurrier put in Shaw after Garcia’s turnovers? Have you seen it from McElroy, Brantley or Aaron Murray? No. And I, for one, am really sorry the entire country had to see it from Simms.

Simms will start next week. It's not right that if he makes a mistake enter Bray. You can't play looking over your shoulder. Bray played good but he's not the starter. Simms has to get rid of the ball, make a decision and go with it.

It's not just about a single play. It's a pattern over the season that the staff has been working with him on.

Hold the ball too long and bad things happen. He's showing little improvement in that regard. Two big fumbles that cost UT a score and turned into USC'jr scores.

I believe we've had enough talk about the QB's. Sim's a tough guy! He can take hit. Bray looks to have a strong arm. I would like to see them taking snaps with a good offensive line in the same color uniforms as theirs.

The team has a lot of heart. I am going to keep cheering for them. Some fans always gripe.

Bray has shown impressive accuracy and speed of delivery downfield. We also have tremendous talent at receiver positions. Bray will allow us to spread the field, throw between the hashes and score big - including opening up the middle for Poole.

Trashing Simms for his understandably frustrated comments is dishonest crap - and the guilty consciences here know it.

Simms isn't the problem, nor the answer. We are playing all freshmen on offense so why not play a freshman at qb. It will help in the future with timing and confidence..

Matt Simms needs to "QUIT WHINING." The coaches decide who plays and when they play. If you had played well enough to get all the snaps you would get all the snaps. Tyler Bray needs a chance also. Beside Justin Worley may be the starter next year since he plans to enroll early.

Sorry guys i missed the game...i read some statements about what Simms said after the game. Can anyone fill me in on what he said. Thanks and sorry for any duplication..Go Vols

It went something like this......

"Waaaahhhh. My daddy. I want my daddy. Coach doesnt like me. It wasnt my fault. Wahhhhh.

I didnt screw up like he did. Waaaahhhh. I only fumbled twice and created a 14 pont swing for the other team. Waaahh. Neither were my fault. Waaahhh. I'm calling my daddy. Waaahhhh!"

Or something lie that. I dont know. I was a little drunk when I read his crybaby crap.
