This is reason number 1 why he's inaccurate. Find another good QB he A) holds the ball like that B) has that 'push the ball' throwing motion.

The "Simms palm grip" is bad, but I would never recommend the "upside-down stranger."

Honestly, if you can throw the ball, then you can throw it. Nate Davis (from Ball State who had a great season) throws without laces. Apparently Gus Malzahn was trying to install no-lace throwing with the Barner QBs. Who cares, as long as you can make a spiral.

He can THROW it...he's got a cannon...but he can't pass very well. Im just saying, this grip leads to inaccuracy and I finally found some good pictures showing it.

Laces are overrated, but proper finger/hand placement does matter.

I can only guess that he learned that specific grip from Phil. If that's the case, I'm cool with it.

Well, he and Chris grip the ball completely different. And Phil gripped it traditionally.

Matty has a small hands grip. And he's bad.

Oh good grief.

People. We have what we have at QB. Instead of b*tching and CONSTANTLY MOANING about it, just deal with it and get thru to next season. It kills me how many of you think you know more than the coaches who see these kids play every day. Sheesh.

You've got it in your head that Simms is bad. Simms is inexperienced and needs reps. You will find any little nuance no matter how small to criticize him to make your point. You were probably on Crompton's case until he broke out and played well last season.

Next criticism is that he didn't cut his toenails before the game.

The coaches believe Simms is the best choice for now. I will agree with their decisions over yours any day of the week. When they decide Bray is better and put him in, that will be OK by me.

I've said before that I think you are on to something - his grip and pushing the ball screws up both his accuracy and timing which also leads to poor decision making.

Was the second picture from the interception in the endzone?? Man - fantastic protection - he appears to have all day and either could have walked into the end zone or taken a little more time and gotten it to an open receiver. The palm hand throw makes him rush throws imo because he has to wind up a little - like throwing a frisbee. He also has very little touch on the short throws or fades gripping it in that fashion imo.

Again I really think you are correct here. I can't tell you whether the coaches are aware - have tried to correct it - don't care or what but this is a huge mechanical flaw imo and creates most of his problems. I am neither a Simms fan or foe but have a son who is a pitcher and would seek help/advice if he was gripping the baseball wrong. I also played some qb and that is not the way to hold and throw a football.

I think that you need to stay on this.

So...logical!

There is so much I don't know about football on a technical level. Not that I am wholly ignorant, but I didn't play on a college level and I'm not a coach.

One thing I do know however is that coaches and players want to win and especially new coaches want to win so they than continue to coach.

The staff sees these guys every day and they play the guys who give us the best chance of success. That is apparently Matt Simms at QB.

It really isn't that hard to "get", but I guess we have to have something to talk about...

They think they do but they don't. The coaches know way more than the posters.

What proves it is, that big picture is from the UT Martin game not Fla. Coaches know what they are doing, the fans are legends in their own minds.

He grips the ball strange, no doubt. Phil must have been okay with this because he probably had been doing this for years, The thing that bothers me is the way he stares down his receivers before throwing the ball. A good safety knows to watch the QBs eyes to see if there will be some sign of where the ball is going. If Simms can stop staring, he will be much more effective.

Does anyone realize that Simms completed 62% of his passes for 260 yds against Florida. His stats were better than his opponent who is predicted to be one of the better QBS in the SEC.

His mistakes were big ones (2 ints.) which had to do with bad reads and had nothing to do with how he gripped the football.

Absolutely.

Besides, at this stage in his development and specifically during the season, you can't just completely change that part of his mechanics. It is what it is.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who found his grip to be weird. It would be kinda difficult to try and change it now, though. It got him this far and I don't see him adjusting now.
