Simms Palm Grip

Has the OC or the QB coach made comment of his grip? It's unique, if it were a problem wouldn't they have tried to correct?

He can THROW it...he's got a cannon...but he can't pass very well. Im just saying, this grip leads to inaccuracy and I finally found some good pictures showing it.

Laces are overrated, but proper finger/hand placement does matter.

This is why his middle range long ball has no touch. He has to change his mechanics depending on the throw. He dips his shoulders back for the long ball and pushes the ball like you mentioned. I throw the ball the same way because my fingers aren't quite long enough. I've got the short fat kind. :)

I've said before that I think you are on to something - his grip and pushing the ball screws up both his accuracy and timing which also leads to poor decision making.

Was the second picture from the interception in the endzone?? Man - fantastic protection - he appears to have all day and either could have walked into the end zone or taken a little more time and gotten it to an open receiver. The palm hand throw makes him rush throws imo because he has to wind up a little - like throwing a frisbee. He also has very little touch on the short throws or fades gripping it in that fashion imo.

You went so far into your analysis you didn't even realize that it was UT-Martin in the 2nd picture. And no, he couldn't have run in as there was a LB playing spy (#41).

Simms has a similar grip/throwing motion to Jay Cutler, from what I've seen of him.

This also doesn't look like a "pushing the ball" motion to me:

So basically he's your prototypical "gunslinger". Watch Cutler or Favre play and he's pretty similar. He'll put touch on the ball when he thinks he needs to but prefers the odd grip:

for more velocity on the ball. QBs have different throwing styles. Simms, once he calmed down a bit and stopped making bonehead reads played a good game without his #1 WR and having his #2 WR and TE gimped with injuries while under pressure almost the entire game and against a good Gators Defense.

Let him play his game the way he's comfortable and get back to your actual job instead of trying to play analyst.

Yes sir, right away sir. Actually, I'm leaving for work in about an hour. And none of your pictures show the same grip that Sims has. They just show 2 other random qb's gripping a football. Doesn't even look close.

They aren't even in the BALLPARK. Let alone their throwing motions are drastically different. But showing those pictures does make it look like Simms does actually have small hands.

C'mon guys think about this. Matts dad is phil simms. To even get to the divison 1 level at qb takes complete dedication, weekend training camps, and frankly the means $.
The middle of a soph or junior campaign is not the time to change a throwing motion. I'm sure that either his father or training coach, or one of three collegiate programs would have asked to switch by now.

I'm not a big matt simms fan. But, I do wish him success. And in order for that to occur he needs to have good blocking, good routes being run, and help from his rn game. At least two of those did not occur on sat.

This team is young and has talent. There are a lot bigger problems than his rlease that cause our problems. Inexperience is one, and youth.

Now, mattie does stare down his receivers. He looked one off this past wekend w a pump fake and threw a td. Fancy that?

Thank God, we're saved.
We've found Hinshaw's replacement.
Is there a defensive line coach in the house.

Reminds me of how Danny Weurful used to throw it. That guy was not the dregs.

If we had Manning or Breese had made the same decisions last week, we would still have been picked x2. He never saw 52 in that end zone throw, completely misread the safety on the other, and hit another Gator in both hands another time. Now the opening play to a wide open Moore. Shoulda been 6.

He's not consistently accurate after watching the missed opportunities against the last two real teams and the warm up. Hopefully, he'll settle down and get in a better rythm. I was surprised by the zip on more than a few balls Saturday.

Our coaches have almost as much expertise as us who post here, and they feel the guy is our best chance to win. So, we'll just have to trust em'. :)

Interesting. Matt has different throwing mechanics than Phil and Chris. Could be that he has small hands.

Agree, his screen passes are line drives....not much toch on the ball. Long passes seem to require way to much time to execute. Like a baseball pitcher...windup and throw, with a bit of shotput touch.
