Sidewalk alumni necks

I live 10 mins away from the stadium and have my whole life, I have been a fan from as long as I can remember. I have never been a student at UT but that doesn't mean that an alumni of UT is any more of a fan than I am. I've been to lots of games and have supported them through thick and thin. If it were only former alumni and current alumni the we would have a bunch of fans sitting on their a** afraid to be to loud so they won't disturb there neighbor sitting next to them.

What's the difference between "former alumni" and "current alumni"? Are former alumni deceased?

Tell me why?

because he says he is a better fan because he has a diploma from UT and you claim to be a better fan because you "bust my a** in the heat rain sleet or snow just to be able to have the money to see my Vols at neyland stadium"

What about guys that go to schools like Ohio State with MUCH better football teams than ours currently, but are still Tennessee fans anyway? Seems like that would take more stones than just going for your school...

That does require a certain amount of fanhood but the fact is your fictional fan still didn't attend UT and obtain a degree

Degree not required for fandom. Those hung-up on fans being graduates are usually young and dumb. Most will outgrow it. I did.

It's like a Michelle Malkin-Rachel Maddow debate. Both participants look like fools and the audience is the real loser.

At least Rachel Maddow is some high quality eye candy, right?

Not to mention the assumption that all college graduates are "pencil pushers".

Until you have sat in the student section as a student of UT you will always be on the outside looking in.....thus the sidewalk fan.

You can be a fan without a diploma...just to a lesser degree. UT is a school not a professional sporting franchise.

To say fans with and without diplomas are the same disregards the effort it takes to be an actual student of the university.

Non diploma holders can change allegiance for the cost of a new ball cap at wal mart. Diploma holders for good or bad are forever linked to the university therefore have a vested interest in the success of the university.

My diploma is worth the same regardless of how the athletics are.

I need something clarified:

I am an alumni but not a graduate of UT. I will eventually, however, attain my MS from UT.... where do I fall in this equation?

I'll hang up and listen.

So when you are an actual alumni of UT and have a diploma you will have a vested interest in the success of the university. Until then you are on a lower tier of fandom than diploma holders.

And to answer an earlier question a diploma in and of itself does not make a fan.

Not fictional. There is a guy that posts here that's a tOSU student but a huge Tennessee fan.

What about this?

Guy attends Tennessee as a freshman, can't afford out of state tuition and graduates from Ohio State. He's sat in Tennessee's student section as a student/fan. Is he a "real" fan?

I will say it's a good thing I graduated when UT football was on top and my diploma was worth more. Kids getting their UT diplomas now are really SOL

We should be friends.

Everyone should now compare what they got their degree in and from where.

Who is going to measure?

I see your point, thinking on it we both make or made sacrifices but damn it he just rubbs me the wrong way

I was reading comments on YouTube between auburn & alabama fans and the auburn fan told the bama fan that their fan base were mostly mad up of sidewalk alumni necks. What does this mean?

Sounds like a qoute Basil Marceaux would make. I stop reading at that point.
