Sick and tired of our delusional academic administration!

Athletics department donates to academics | The Daily Beacon

I do realize that this is an old article. It is my understanding based on different articles that the AD has given anywhere from $6 Million every year, to 17.5 Million the year before Hart arrived.

I have no beef with Cheek's goal of being a top 25 institution, and apparently many of those top 25 recieve no funding from the AD.

If the AD can expect no help from admissions or tutoring, then the academic side should expect no finacial help from the AD. As with most things in life, this is not about ACT scores, higher standards or playing by the same set of rules. It's about money.

I don't pretend to know all that is going on behind the scenes, but if we can't attract the best coach because of percieved problems between the AD and the Administration that needs to be addressed.

I don't think they "expect" it, but however, with so much that the athletes get free from the university, I don't think a yearly check is asking too much. Maybe that is just me, though.

Actually, I believe they do "expect" it. I also believe that back in 2009-10 the set up was changed in terms of reporting and the tennessee fund/vasf was changed as well.

The University of Tennessee Athletic Department receives $1 million/yr. from student activity fees to support Title IX sports. That is it. The UTAD receives no money from the state of Tennessee.

As for" athletes get for free"...ask Inky Johnson how free his education was.

So.... you're going to pull one extreme example from a group of guys who chose to take the risks that football has?

The University of Tennessee is a school, not just a football team. It's time to get over that. The two would not exist as they are today without one another.

I think it's an extreme thing to say that players get "this for free". They take great risks everyday to get the education that most of them will definitely need. What exactly do they get for free that someone on an academic full ride does not? Nobody is sending that young man or young lady death threats if they do poorly on the calculus test.

I agree that the two must exist together and for a very long time they did. My only point is this: If we are going to have a successful Athletics program it requires that the football program be healthy. If there are reasons, financial reasons or other that prevent the AD from hiring the coach of his choice, or that coach has reservations regarding the current relationship between the AD and the Administration, it needs to be addressed.

They take great risks to play a game for your entertainment. This isn't some ****ing noble cause that they're enduring.

Rule and law infractions get swept under the rug and they get a full ride that ends in what? 80-90% of them doing absolutely nothing after college because they don't make it into the NFL. And they pissed away their time here on a philosophy or sociology degree so they could 'focus on football'.

Also, they have every single resource possible once they get here. They have their own center for academics with free printing, research assistance, tutoring. People can get paid to take notes for athletes. And our standards line up with other institutions in the SEC (That are ranked better than we are).

To say that they get it for free is an overstatement. But, to say that they don't get every single advantage possible... Is naive.

It's not the academic administration's fault that they've(the AD) been paying millions of dollars on buyouts the past few years. It's not the academic administration's fault that the UTAD can't hire a coach and turn a large profit when they bring in over $100m a year.

Sounds like ****ty management on the AD side.

Isn't this duplicated at schools everywhere...not just us

You'll get no argument from me on Mr. Hamilton's performance, by all accounts a good fund raiser and now the AD has the worst or close to the worse reserve in the conference.

I won't address the issue of football players and your opinion on them other than to say the $100 million you bring up comes directly from their participation.

My post is in regards to the perception that exists, that UT football is not playing on a level playing field in regards to the other SEC membership in terms of players getting into school and that the profits are not under the control of the AD and a myriad of other things. I've heard/read this is a big reason UT has had trouble hiring a proven coach.
