Should Josh Dobbs forgo the NFL?

The guy is so smart why get banged up. I'm sure he would make a good satisfying living using his brain as much as his brawn.Just Saying.

He is smart to give it a try. If he gets drafted high enough he gets enough money that if he is smart secures a solid financial future for himself.

The average contract for a second round NFL pick in 2015 was 4 years at $1.2 million a year, with half of that guaranteed. That doesn't include a signing bonus that will be mid six figures. So just by being drafted and signing, Dobbs will be guaranteed a minimum of $2.9 million.

Worth the risk for a couple of years. Invested properly, he'll be set at 25.

I personally think skipping the NFL would be a good choice. CTE is serious business and can ruin the rest of your life. Dobbs could make big $$$ working as an aerospace engineer. Why risk your mind and body for a short-term payday? I guess that's the "American way". I sure as heck wouldn't play football except as a last resort.

So given the opportunity to make a minimum of $2.9 million for two years of work, you wouldn't take it? I call BS on that.

He's already addressed this in the Gruden interview. He said he's been playing this game since he was 5 and loves it. His degree and that career will be there when football ends. For now, he wants the shot in the NFL for as long as it will have him. Logical so why do people continue to question him on this?

No BS. We all know if you go to the NFL you aren't just going to sign and then quit in 2 yrs unless it wasn't your choice. I'd much rather work 25 years at $100-200k at an occupation that didn't risk my mental health, debilitating pain, etc.

Another great thread from the OP

Why he is the ONLY ignore I have.

From a family member that attended class with him....he is an average to above average student. He will make more in one year in the NFL than the next 5 fresh out of school. 5 years in the NFL with his smarts and if he saves his $$, he owns his own company and pays AE's to work for him. You guys are impressed with the BS in Aerospace....it's a fancy ME and they just don't make that much to start.

He skipped baseball for which he was arguably better to play football which is his true passion...so NO!

He will do both, a little engineering and additional learning on the side while playing in the NFL.

And when he is ready, he will design the jets and spaceships that NFL executives ride in for those god awful interleague games with Martians, Aliens and Predators! (on a side note, I think you can find all 3 in Nashville).

He is a QB. Your fears for him would be more valid if he was a RB or LB.

Dobbs should do what Dobbs wants to do. Some people just can't understand why he would want to try pro football when he can build rockets. First and foremost he has to what makes him happy, to heck what the rest of us think. I don't blame him one bit for pursuing football, his degree will be there for him when he quits or retires from the game. It's just that simple folks, freewill is a great thing. GBO!!!!!!

Not to put a delicate point on it, but it is his life, not yours. Maybe you need to get one. Just saying.

I had already had this thought; Manning is a perfect example. How many c-spine surgeries has he had? I've lost count.

From the engineering view he has about 3-4 years to begin to apply his technical skill. After that he will need a refresher or change direction. Masters in engineering or MBA. I think he was headed for the MBA anyway. Given his leadership skill he would make a great project manager.
No one engineer builds a rocket. You have teams of engineers, each one getting a small part of the pie. In manny cases the work is subcontracted with the in house engineering managing a subcontractor or two.

IF he plays one year, he makes enough to set himself up well to begin a career in building rockets. It's like a business loan to sit on the bench and learn a playbook

he just won the lottery basically. even if he doesn't get a 2nd contract and flames out, you can't pass up the pay day he's going to get, even if it's short term, it's the kind of money that can set you up for the rest of your life, while then doing what you're trained to do outside football.

he'll still have to work, but imagine the flexibility and security you could have if you have a couple million in the bank, in less than 2-3 years......

it takes most of us a lifetime to accumulate that kind of wealth....if you're trying to accumulate it as you go that is. and many don't, sadly. it's a head start that very few get, but we'd all take in a heart beat.

Good grief let Dobbs live his life, go skydiving if you want, learn to bungie jump if you want. Don't never let anybody tell you what to do. It's easy to second guess somebody else, let the man play football. Freewill is a wonderful thing, never let nobody take it away. GBO!!!!!!!
