Shooting in El Paso

CNN's Jake Tapper fires back at ‘Squad’ member Rashida Tlaib: ‘I never said that’

CNN’s Jake Tapper fired back Monday at “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib after she ripped him over comments he made Sunday on “State of the Union.”

Tapper was discussing the tone of leaders amid the tragic mass shooting in El Paso, Texas when he said something that apparently bothered Tlaib.

“You hear conservatives all the time, rightly so in my opinion, talk about the tone set by people in the Arab world. Palestinian leaders and the way they talk about Israelis… justifying,” Tapper said. "You can’t compare the ideology of Hamas with anything else. But at the same time, either tone matters or it doesn’t.”

Tlaib noticed a tweet from someone who objected to Tapper’s message and took things a step further.

“Comparing Palestinian human rights advocates to terrorist white nationalists is fundamentally a lie. Palestinians want equality, human dignity & to stop the imprisonment of children,” Tlaib wrote. “White supremacy is calling for the *domination* of one race w/ the use of violence.”

Tapper fired back on Monday with a tweet directed at the freshman congresswoman.

“You're 100% right, Congresswoman @RashidaTlaib, it's a lie. Because I never said that. What I said was those who believe Palestinian leaders bear responsibility for the incitement of terrorism cannot then let US leaders off the hook and act as if words don't matter,” the CNN host wrote.

Well, if you're perpertually offended then you've got a lot in common with the male Trump supporters on this board.

Yep, you're a hardcore lefty. No sense of humor or apparent ability to detect massive sarcasm.

We don't normally use blue font in this forum but we may have to make an exception for you.

Because Bjorn is exceptional.

Or is that "special?"

Not a red hatter, but I certainly thought Hillary was guilty as hell. BTW, thinking Hillary was guilty does not equate to supporting Trump. It's possible to dislike both, I do. But if put on a continuum, IMO, Hillary surpasses Trump as a horrible person. That's how opinions work. We were set up for "worst ever" no matter who won.
I know you're not a redhatter, but the chanters at his pep rallies are.
I also know that you are among the many who felt Hillary was even more despicable than Trump.
We do at least agree that Trump is the worst ever.

Beto O’Rourke Tells Trump: Stay out of El Paso

2020 White House hopeful and former Rep. Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke (D-TX) is calling on President Donald Trump not to visit El Paso in the wake of the mass shooting in his former district.

GettyImages-1124261394-640x480.jpg

“This president, who helped create the hatred that made Saturday’s tragedy possible, should not come to El Paso. We do not need more division,” O’Rourke wrote on Twitter. “We need to heal. He has no place here.”

“He is a racist, and he stokes racism in this country. And it does not just offend our sensibilities, it fundamentally changes the character of this country, and it leads to violence,” he told reporters. “And again, there are still details that we are waiting on, but I’m just following the lead that I’ve heard from the El Paso Police Department where they say there are strong indications that this shooter wrote that manifesto and this was inspired by his hatred of people here in this community.”

Appearing on CNN the following day, the Texas Democrat accused the president of being a white nationalist, who uses rhetoric “reminiscent of Third Reich.”

Booker: I Don’t Welcome Trump’s Statement on Condemning Bigotry – Healing Starts With Saying ‘I’ve Made Mistakes’

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “Inside Politics,” 2020 presidential candidate Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) stated that he doesn’t welcome President Trump’s statement that America must condemn bigotry, and that “reconciliation, the kind of healing that we need, starts first with someone standing up and saying, I’ve been wrong. I’ve made mistakes. What I’ve said before has been unacceptable.”

Cory_Booker_c0-6-900-530_s885x516.jpg

Booker said, “You know, the president, in his remarks, were weak — was weak and he was wrong. There can be no equivocation in a time like this, where we have a serious crisis in our country, and for the president to imply that video games and mental illness was the reason why a white supremacist with a gun did what he did, mental illness didn’t kill the people of Dayton. A man wielding a high-caliber, high-capacity rifle did.”

Host Kate Bolduan then asked, “Senator, another thing that the president said in his remarks today…’In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy.’ That has been something — hearing that from President Trump has been something that I know a lot of folks have been waiting for and looking for, not just in the past 24 hours, but for a very long time. Do you welcome that acknowledgment?”

Booker answered, “No. Look, reconciliation, the kind of healing that we need, starts first with someone standing up and saying, I’ve been wrong. I’ve made mistakes. What I’ve said before has been unacceptable. So, you can’t speak out of one side of your mouth about the need for us to come together as a country, but consistently do things that divide this nation and pit us against each other, that fuel racial bigotry and hatred.”

If the price of bullets went up to $1,000 a piece we'd have a lot less mass shooting situations.

Well there you go. You've solved all sorts of problems with one sentence. But why stop there? Let's save the world, you and I...

Let's raise the price of a can of beer or a mixed drink to $1000. That should take care of the thousands of victims of drunk drivers each year.
Same for a joint, crack rock, or 8-ball. There go drug-related deaths.
Cigarettes? Same. Think of all the money we'll save on health care.
Prescription pain meds? Same. That should stop the opioid abuse, right? Screw your Rx card, it's a grand a pop.
Ammo? Only the Feds can afford it now. Glocks and AR's become obsolete overnight. No more gun-related deaths within a month, or 100 rounds, whichever comes first. Although, and I have to tell you this, at $1000/round....I'm sitting on a gold mine. A really big one. I like your plan.

Genius, I tell you. Pure genius.

But...y'know, the more I think about it, and what a great idea it is...I dunno...there's just something about it that says "this won't work". Can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm sure you'll figure it out and explain it to us all.

Meanwhile, on any given weekend in Chicago...

I have Jimmy Carter in my top 5. His presidency clarified a lot.

Those of us on the left issue just don't buy into the argument that an improved lot in life for black and brown people has to come at the expense of, or to the determine of, white people. The only people who think that have an outdated view of the economy and a bigoted view of races in general.

He's right. Trump cannot act as a leader or have moral authority until he confesses his misconduct on this point.

Until then he is part of the problem, not the solution.

Chinese State Media: ‘White Nationalism Is Deeply Rooted in Trump’s Mind’

China’s state-run media quickly seized on the obsessions of their American counterparts over the weekend by linking President Donald Trump to “white nationalism” and blaming gun violence on the large supply of firearms and loose gun laws in the United States.

ModernLeaders.jpg

The Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times worked the “white supremacist” angle on Sunday, citing the manifesto left by El Paso, Texas, alleged mass murderer Patrick Crusius:
A hate crime is motivated by prejudice, and the victim is targeted because of their social group or race. Many US states have their hate crime laws. However, the number of hate crimes has increased in the US in recent years. This shows that US social conflicts are rising and the problem of racial discrimination is especially serious. The El Paso shooting has worsened fears of the increasing white supremacist threat in the North American country.

More importantly, although US President Donald Trump called the El Paso shooting a “hateful act” on Twitter, he has not yet recognized the seriousness of the white supremacist problem. What’s worse, white nationalism is deeply rooted in Trump’s mind. This can be seen from his attitude toward immigration, his insistence on building a border wall and his racist tweets. Instead of resolving the problem, he is even inciting white American people’s hatred.
The astute observer will note that China is not exactly eager to take in large numbers of migrants or refugees from beyond its borders. China takes border security very seriously, especially for the parts of its border that occasionally move further away from Beijing, deploys hardcore nationalist political themes on a daily basis, and is not gentle with minority populations or respectful of their beliefs.

One area where Communist China cannot be accused of hypocrisy is its advocacy of stricter gun control. The Global Times declared the U.S. “urgently needs gun control,” although it acknowledged that “if the shooters’ hatred is not eliminated, they can still use other weapons to vent their anger on innocent people.”

China’s state-run Xinhua news service published a lengthy article advocating gun control on Monday, quoting U.S. advocates who claim the “ubiquitousness of guns is the ‘prime problem’ behind gun violence” and calling for “stricter background checks.”

Xinhua concluded by quoting the prediction of Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Darrell West that “gun violence is unlikely to change until Democrats hold the House, Senate, and the White House” because “most GOP lawmakers fail to take action because their constituents favor gun rights.”

Trump forfeited the moral authority of the position before he was ever sworn in and has done nothing but allow it to further erode since.
