It's true, we need shooters, but just as badly, we need ball-handlers. Games like this are why I cautioned those picking us to finish 23-8, or better, this year.
We really struggle to score anywhere, consistently. We have no go-to guy that can score at will, like Williams could, and our one clutch player is playing with a perpetually bum shoulder.
I had us winning 18-19 games for a reason. We will get hot from outside and beat a couple teams we shouldn't, but we will also see some extended cold spells, especially from the perimeter, like we have the last two games that will cost us wins. Additionally, I don't see many, if any, alpha personalities out there. Turner probably is, but again, is wholly ineffective with a bad wing. Add in that we are playing with a short bench that is low on experience, and this was always going to be the kind of season where we had little margin for error against the better teams on our roster.
So, far, I still have us a game ahead of where I thought we'd be. Preseason, I had us at 6-4 at this point, losing to Washington, so hard for me to complain about where we are relative to my personal expectations, but those who had us winning 23+ are probably disappointed, perhaps on the verge of panic, even. This team should improve, and hopefully Vescovi, and perhaps Plavsic at some point, can help out. We just lost too much talent, scoring, ball-handling, and experience to expect to not hardly skip a beat.
Every year Turner has gone through some retry bad slumps. First year it was near the end of SEC play. Second year it was to start the season. Last year he went through a slump at the end of SEC play through the SEC tourney. Fortunately then he wasn’t so relied upon as he is now.
There is a dip in percentages, but not nearly as drastic as Tennessee’s...Turner's shoulder woes are hurting us, and also no GW down low who drew an auto double and would almost always make the right pass.I'd bet that there are a lot of teams that are struggling to knock down the longer 3s this year. Unfortunately TN doesn't have enough post offense to counter defenses that cheat into the paint.

Not sure I believe the first sentence. Playing PG seemed very natural to him at the end of last season, where he actually outplayed Bone over the course of the postseason, and he looked very good playing PG to open this season.Playing PG really impacts his game in a negative way.
If Bone had stayed or we had a legit PG with Turner playing SG, we probably are undefeated right now.

I think what negatively impacts Turner most, is his shoulder injury, first, and then the fact that he feels like he has to score for this team to win because no one else seems ready and/or willing to step into that role of go-to offensive player when we need a bucket. It is hard for him to play PG and be a distributor to a team of guys who can’t or won’t go score the basketball.
Bone would likely struggle with the same issues, except he is fully healthy and would have Turner at his disposal off the ball. I think it is often underestimated just how shallow and inexperienced this team really is, and how slim the margin for error is, offensively.
This is going to sound mean but people are really stupid sometimes. It’s like Lamonte forgot how to be a good shooter because he moved to PG. Moving off the ball doesn’t magically fix his shoulder. This narrative can’t play point is the dumbest “storyline” of the season.
