Butch's offensive style puts a defense at a disadvantage, especially in the SEC
A defense cant stay on the field and take as many snaps and 1) stay fresh and 2) stay healthy
If we stopped going 90 to nothing and run 25 less plays a game on offense, our D would be healthier and better
Those guys are just worn slap out
HUNH kills your D
agreed. and when your offense continued to go 3 and out and turn it over in the 1st halves of most of the games we played, it takes a toll.
and as the injuries started to pile up, it just exasperated the issues that were already there.
he was forced to use the position coaches already here, and i for one can't think of any reason why Martinez still has a job. we haven't had a single DB progress in their development....you could argue that MF, EM, JM all regressed. the secondary is awful.
your best LB all season was Colton Jumper, and by the end of the season you have only 2 DT's on scholarship taking meaningful snaps, rotating reserve DE's on the interior.
you don't know who's playing week to week, so development that you might be able to do under normal circumstances turns in to just getting the new guys up to speed on the game plan etc...and you're having to do that every week....makes it difficult to find out what anyone does well, what they don't do well, and adjust scheme for it.
we played a 4-2-5 all season, not by choice...
i'm not defending the performance. this defense was ALL TIME BAD. i just don't think you get to that level of pitiful performance just because Shoop arrived in Knoxville, and that be the only reason it happened. and that doesn't mean i think he handled everything correctly either.
i think all of the above handcuffs any coach and you don't truly get to see what he's all about from a game planning and development standpoint. i think you got to see glimpses of what he's about in situational football, and most of that was pretty good.
there are issues...once we get blocked, we stay blocked, we can't cover to save our life, and we tackle high has a matter of process it seems. we are out of position too much, and we continue to see the same errors out wide. no one ever seems to have cut back or back side lanes, and even if they do, they're out of position and take bad angles. RB's always seeme to fall forward for another yard or two after contact.
but most of that to me is teaching issues. and who does most of the teaching???? position coaches. so he either needs to get more involved in that with those guys, or he needs to be allowed to go get the teachers he wants teaching his defense.
long story short...i just don't think Shoop all the sudden, given his track record at his previous two stops, sucks out loud because he put a power t on his hat.
