Any Chance we could get Charlie Strong as DC? Or do you see him getting a Head Coach Gig this season?

texas's defense this season? Nobody can play defense in college football anymore. That's the bottom line. It's an offensive game--score 40 if you want to win. We didn't tonight and lost.

The defense is soft..... toilet paper soft. The secondary gets man handled and can't shed a block or cover a route.... any route.

The scary part is who is going to drastically improve and step up next year? Where are the LBs needed? DBs?..... I've never seen a softer group of defenders on the field at one time for TN.

The DBs NEVER look back for the ball either.....wtf? Is that how they're coached? If so..... Martinez can gtfo.

The defense as a whole looks confused way too often.... very poor.

Terrible way to coach em up... no way to pick the ball, and as we saw, not likely to bat the ball away.

This is as much a recruiting failure as it is Shoop just outright sucking

It's both for sure. But Jancek was much better with less talent last year. What Shoop has done with this defense is shameful and should disqualify him from ever getting a head coaching job. Hell, no one should ever hire him again to be a DC.

I disagree. We have plenty of people with talent of 4*'s in the secondary from the 2016 class. Where's Warrior at? Martin has failed us tremendously or you could say the coaches have failed him tremendously.

Plenty of talent back there. It's not recruiting there. Maybe you could say that at the LB position because we only got two & one didn't even see the field this season in Blaklely.

Amen again brother. We are very soft. Can't tackle. Players are almost always in the wrong position or missing assignments. To let a Vandy team throw like that against you something BAD is wrong in the secondary.

Secondary is where we supposed to have the most depth for 2016. That's turned out not to be true or our coaching staff is failing our kids badly in how to play their positions. I think it's more of the bad coaching myself.

They all probably need to go like you said. Vandy putting up that type of yardage against us? A team that was averaging 18 pts/game & scores 45 points on us? That proves there is a big problem & it's not on the players.

Injuries are gonna be blamed for our 8-4 record & possibly rightfully so but even with injuries we shouldn't lose to either USCe or Vandy period. I can see Bama & Texas A&M but not those other two teams. There are no excuses for it.

God D*mned them all and those who wanted Filmed fired. The horse S#it we have dealt with since 08 has not been worth that firing. Sorry but it's true. We haven't been "Tennessee" for a long time.

Butch's offensive style puts a defense at a disadvantage, especially in the SEC

A defense cant stay on the field and take as many snaps and 1) stay fresh and 2) stay healthy

If we stopped going 90 to nothing and run 25 less plays a game on offense, our D would be healthier and better

Those guys are just worn slap out

I raised questions about him early in the season and, after some debate it was determined that I was an Ole Miss fan.

Something has smelled bad from the get go and I thought Shoop was a goner even before tonight

No, you're a Miss St fan.

I've said it 4-5 times before on VN and I'll say it again now. I was 100% wrong about Shoop. Thought it was a great hire and it would be the move that put us over the top. I couldn't have been more wrong. I'm in a virtual state of shock over just how awful this defense is under his supervision. He's literally worse than Sal Sunseri.

I did too. I thought hiring Shoop would be the piece to make us instant SEC Champ contenders. I was at the game and you just can't appreciate how bad we are on D until you see it live. We gave their receivers 10-15 yard cushions and could not under any circumstances shed a block. Over, and over, and over it was the same thing. Our secondary is lost.
Guys.....it ain't injuries here. Kessling interviewed someone on D(I did not catch the name) and asked the player if the Vandy offense was a different look than UT expected to which the player replied " No, we'd studied this on film, it was nothing we'd not seen". Call it soft, lack of talent or whatever you want but plain n simple it's poor technique and very, very bad coaching. It's almost like Shoop set out to run the D into the ground

Spot on. But some idiots on here thought he needed to go because of 2 losing seasons in 16 years. Its worked out fantastic for us hasnt it?

Bingo, watching a ton of B12 football I can concur with ease. Oklahoma goes a million miles per hour on offense and they let up 854 yrds. They slow the game down (against a better team might I add) and we hold them down for most of the game (until the offense disappeared b/c we cruise controlled to early). OU has a 6-7 minute drive and lone and behold a 3 and out by the defense.
This is easily explainable b/c these offenses a determined by defenders making mistakes. When you're tired, (or they have hurried up) a defender makes more mistakes. This is why the first first down in a drive for a HUNH is a game changer.

I don't think anyone will touch Strong as a head coach right now, what happened at TX probably soured a lot of ADs on him. But you will seem him as a DC next year. AR and Ole Miss are both looking, along with several other programs. May as well throw UT in that mix if Shoop decides to bail or he gets fired.

The long pole in the tent for UT is Jones, most coordinators can't work for a micro-manager and in my opinion that's what Jones is. Orgeron did the same thing at Ole Miss before he got fired, he learned his lesson from that failure will Jones?

I now am in complete agreement with your second paragraph. I think Butch Jones is the problem. Why is that Shoop flourished under Franklin and not Jones?

I was dead wrong about Shoop as well. Although I didnt crown him the next big thing like a lot on here did, I did think he would improve the defense. I never thought in a million years I would ever see a defense worse than Sunseri's. Boy was I wrong.

I seriously wondered when people were going to talk about him like they've talked about Debord. He has been a disaster. I thought some insiders knew something about him I didn't know. He has never been a dominant coordinator. Best Vandy ever did was what Butch put up this season. And it was during a very down time for Tennessee. Vandy's QB eyed his receivers down all night and it was obvious when he was handing the ball off because he would turn completely around and run towards the back.

I still have a theory that these players were used to their DC on the field and not in the box. I think certain players respond better when they can actually talk to the DC while the offense is playing. There is no real communication.

I don't understand where you get this. There is no way that you can know this. What's your opinion based on? Is it because Butch hired DeBord? That seems to be where everyone gets this theory. But its quite a leap to say he's a micro-manager from based on one actionof which you probably don't truly know the rationale.

I feel like you've brewed your opinion up in your frustration.

Well... good as any, I just feel there is more to this mess than injuries.

I think the same, but what the hell is going on ? we will probably never hear anything, but something is going on,it is like the defensive players don't won't to play for him

or they flat out don't understand what he is trying to get them to do
