Shoop

Honest Question, What is wrong with Shoops defense? I thought he did a great job at Vandy and Penn State. But his players looked out of position all season. I just don't understand what happened, but it was horrible to watch all year. Is this just a fluke year or were his other years a fluke?

Honest answer?

He coached at two schools that have higher admissions standards.

I think his scheme requires smarter players than we have.

It appears that James Franklin was running the defense at Vandy and Penn State and Shoop was just a figure head that implemented it. When everything is going good then he is ok, but when things like injuries pop up Franklin was the one making the lineup and play call changes.

I think the same, but what the hell is going on ? we will probably never hear anything, but something is going on,it is like the defensive players don't won't to play for him

or they flat out don't understand what he is trying to get them to do

The offense looked like garbage when the other players thought a guy (Hurd) was taking snaps from more deserving players. Maybe the defense feels the same about Jumper.

I think its Butch. Shoop and his players flourished under Franklin.

The most pathetic thing about tonight is how much we heard that Vandy's run game would be a threat. Instead they threw all over us. They didn't really need their supposedly best weapon. They just did whatever they wanted. I just don't understand what happened to make the defense fall off so quickly. The players look lost most plays. They have had more and more film on each opponent and they get worse. Makes no sense.

I agree with the one poster.

I think Franklin was the actual DC which is why they are even better this year.

We got fooled.

It probably doesn't help that guys recruited and projected to play on the defensive side of the ball at the college level are being switched to offense. Byrd and Jennings... seems like Butch sees a guys potential in offense and he takes them. Our secondary seems to be paying the price. If I could replace one coach on this staff that I think would have the biggest positive impact for us it would be willie Martinez. He is terrible and our secondary is terrible. Bring back Terry Fair

That answers your question

Butch's offensive style puts a defense at a disadvantage, especially in the SEC

A defense cant stay on the field and take as many snaps and 1) stay fresh and 2) stay healthy

If we stopped going 90 to nothing and run 25 less plays a game on offense, our D would be healthier and better

Those guys are just worn slap out

HUNH kills your D

If the defense could force the other team to punt every once in a while, they could " get off the field". These last 3 games the opposing teams didn't even need a punter.

At the beginning of the season, if someone would have told you Tennessee would give up 2000 yards of offense to Kentucky, Missouri, and Vandy down the stretch no way you'd believe them. But we did, we gave up 1 entire mile plus another 2 1/2 football fields worth of offense to those 3 offensive juggernauts.

Shoop has proven to be a top DC in the country at past schools and he could be great here. I think Butch tries to get to involved on that side of the ball and he needs to give Shoop full control and that means brining in his own coaches. Martinez is garbage, Thig seemed to have our first sting LB's prepared but once they went down we were lost, Stripling had one of the best DLs UT has had in a long time but we rarely got pressure with our 4 down linemen. Let Shoop bring in real coaches and not Butch's buddies and I think we will be fine on that side of the ball.

Well... good as any, I just feel there is more to this mess than injuries.

There has to be.

Shoop has produced Top 10 defenses in this league with Vandy. In other words, he's produced Top 10 defenses with our scout team talent.

He can't produce a Top 100 defense here? With Derek Barnett?

What... what could be the problem?

I'd prefer Shoop as head coach over Butch Jones. Blast me if you want, Jones is a joke of a coach and he isn't getting performance from the Best Staff In America nor 90% of the players on his team.

Dave Clawson gets a lot of blame on this site for Fulmer's demise. Fulmer made his own bed long before Dave Clawson was hired. Clawson has been offered 2 head coaching jobs since Fulmer was fired and has done pretty well as a head coach. I think Shoop would do the same compared to Butch.

This is dumb.Bob Shoop is a fraud, and Butch is right behind him. Something smells on Rocky Top and this defense could not have been worse. Really disappointed.

Did not snap and clear, lacked eye discipline, lacked resiliency, did not play complimentary football, got ass kicked by Vandy.

Wake up, Vol Nation. Coach Jones cares nothing for defense and he and Shoop are a bad alpha-male mix.

The first overhaul must be with the strength-and-conditioning program and practice routine. These injuries stem from terrible off-season conditioning and faulty practice habits. Jones is clueless as how to build a championship team = Defense comes first, with stout toughness.

David Blackburn should clean house after he's hired. Get rid of Hart's stench from top to bottom in the athletic department. Hire an experienced top-tier football coach, say David Cutcliffe, for example. Put certain boosters, say like the Haslams, on blast that he, and he alone will run UTAD. Keep the sharks at bay.

And no, Peyton shouldn't coach on the Hill. He needs to run the Titans organization. This type of NFL power within the state would influence any young man considering playing at Tennessee = instant access to the NFL pipeline. And if Coach Cut is hired, Peyton will be his biggest booster.

Jones is NOT the answer. He needs to go into politics and make lingo-ism great again.

Cutcliffe? Really? If the best we can do is a washed up 4-8 coach from Duke count me out.

I've said it 4-5 times before on VN and I'll say it again now. I was 100% wrong about Shoop. Thought it was a great hire and it would be the move that put us over the top. I couldn't have been more wrong. I'm in a virtual state of shock over just how awful this defense is under his supervision. He's literally worse than Sal Sunseri.

We jinxed ourselves saying he couldn't be worse than Sunseri lol

Penn States defense is actually better this year (after Shoop left)

They're actually marginally worse, but the lack of noticeable drop-off still raises the question of whether Shoop was just riding Franklin's coat tails. Not saying it's so, just saying it raises the question.
