Is the worst Def. Coordinator to EVER coach at UT, including Sunseri. Our defense has given up historical yardage (1,900 yards) the past 3 games against KY, Mizzou and Vandy. Vandy just scored the most points they ever have in an SEC game in 45 years tonight. Shoop should be fired before the bus gets back to Knoxville. We paid him $1M for this??

Honest Question, What is wrong with Shoops defense? I thought he did a great job at Vandy and Penn State. But his players looked out of position all season. I just don't understand what happened, but it was horrible to watch all year. Is this just a fluke year or were his other years a fluke?

I raised questions about him early in the season and, after some debate it was determined that I was an Ole Miss fan.

Something has smelled bad from the get go and I thought Shoop was a goner even before tonight

Penn States defense is actually better this year (after Shoop left)

Wondering same thing. Injuries killed us, but this went way beyond that, the last 3 games were a breakdown in basic fundamentals.

I'd prefer Shoop as head coach over Butch Jones. Blast me if you want, Jones is a joke of a coach and he isn't getting performance from the Best Staff In America nor 90% of the players on his team.

Dave Clawson gets a lot of blame on this site for Fulmer's demise. Fulmer made his own bed long before Dave Clawson was hired. Clawson has been offered 2 head coaching jobs since Fulmer was fired and has done pretty well as a head coach. I think Shoop would do the same compared to Butch.

I agree original poster. Shoop should be a one year & done DC in my opinion. He hasn't shown anything. He is not an SEC caliber DC period. We've been terrible on defense all year long when we were supposed to be one of the best in the SEC.

Yeah, everybody can holler injuries all they want but he still can't coach SEC talent type defense. We need to consider an awful lot of coaching changes if you ask me starting at the top too.

Shoop has said multiple times that he was hired to beat Florida. Now he knows he can take the rest of the season off.

I think there's a chance. Not a lot of head jobs open he could get right now. He a southerner with excellent recruiting ties and a lot of SEC experience. He would tear it up IMO

I don't think anyone will touch Strong as a head coach right now, what happened at TX probably soured a lot of ADs on him. But you will seem him as a DC next year. AR and Ole Miss are both looking, along with several other programs. May as well throw UT in that mix if Shoop decides to bail or he gets fired.

The long pole in the tent for UT is Jones, most coordinators can't work for a micro-manager and in my opinion that's what Jones is. Orgeron did the same thing at Ole Miss before he got fired, he learned his lesson from that failure will Jones?

The defense is soft..... toilet paper soft. The secondary gets man handled and can't shed a block or cover a route.... any route.

The scary part is who is going to drastically improve and step up next year? Where are the LBs needed? DBs?..... I've never seen a softer group of defenders on the field at one time for TN.

The DBs NEVER look back for the ball either.....wtf? Is that how they're coached? If so..... Martinez can gtfo.

The defense as a whole looks confused way too often.... very poor.

This is as much a recruiting failure as it is Shoop just outright sucking

I've said it 4-5 times before on VN and I'll say it again now. I was 100% wrong about Shoop. Thought it was a great hire and it would be the move that put us over the top. I couldn't have been more wrong. I'm in a virtual state of shock over just how awful this defense is under his supervision. He's literally worse than Sal Sunseri.
