I'm not 100% sold on him either, but last year he tried to keep Jancek's terminology, and translate it into his own system so the veterans wouldn't struggle with communication. It's safe to say that turned out to be a poor choice, and probably played into some of the defensive staff changes that occurred at the end of 2016.
Just a reminder Hoke if you'll recall was hanging around before the start of last season, His coming aboard and Stripling in his new role must have been in the cards for awhile. Not sure. I wonder if it was pushed for by Stripling, and that played into Hoke coming on board. Regardless of who came up with the idea, it was definitely a bad one.
So you're saying it's not ok to complain about giving up 600 yds to Vandy unless you can provide your own defensive game plan?
I'll have to disagree with that. That was an embarrassment for TN football

Besides the fact that there's a know rule that losing to vandy gets a coach fired, this chart points out why vandy loss, for me, was much more frustrating than SC. I think even though played SC coming off break week, that team was physically and emotionally exhausted from the four game gauntlet, and then you throw on some of the team chemistry stuff w/ Hurd, Dobbs played his worst game, and we got a loss. The vandy loss was more on coaches than SC...imo.
After giving up 600+ yards to Vandy..not really going to buy into anything this guy is saying yet..
Yeah... because Shoop has never been truly successful in P-5 football while Jones has, right? Who recruited the roster Shoop had to coach last fall? The answer... is who you blame.

DT is a rotational position, there are starters but the 4 listed play a lot of snaps. Week one Vickers was our smallest DT at 295 and only DT under 300 lbs. By Vandy he was our heaviest DT, smallest being 259 lbs. That is a huge difference. Those guys weren't large enough to clog the middle of the line so LBs had to play up to try and stop the run. This means safeties were responsible for the middle of the field and also helping on running plays. This puts corners on an island. This is hard for a lot of fans to understand who have never coached or played the game.
