The track is moving toward being a lot more like Hugo now...actually even a bit more east. It could punch the outer banks in the mouth and then head on up the coast toward New York / New England.
Hatteras could be devatated by a Cat 3. If you have never been there, there are sections that are less than 1/4 mile wide. Probably be several new inlets cut in the chain. Hope it's still there in May for my annual post school year fishing trip with my buds.

Tornado
Effects less area than a major earthquake and far less infrastructure
i mean you personally. either in a major earthquake or take a direct hit from a f5. and you don't have a basement or storm shelter. take your pick of a closet or bathroom.
not sure which would be worse, but personally i think i'd take my chances of with the earthquake. if i can make it outside i'll be good
I think I would agree. Tornados are so unpredictable.
Tornadoes are far more predictable than Earthquakes.
Granted, you cant predict when and where one will form, but we at least know that one could happen when you look at the dynamics of a supercell thunderstorm. You can at least prepare in case one forms from a supercell by paying close attention to warnings prior to the event
Earthquakes just happen out of nowhere
true to a certain extent. however in a super outbreak things are drastically diff. example on 4/27 power was out at my house since 11:45 that morning due to the 2nd tornado that came thru my community. the f5 didn't show up til 4:45, and i honestly had no idea it was coming. sure the sirens were going off, but they go off for the whole county. i knew it wasn't good by the color of the sky right before it hit. also the complete calmness outside was weird. but then i heard the roar and had about 5 seconds to hit the closet. then 20 minutes later a f1 hit. again had no idea until i heard the roar
I have been to the north side of the outerbanks, bit not down toward Ocrakoke. I came away with the impression that that area could take a punch in the mouth. Between the sand dunes and the house construction, it looked like they would handle it better than a lit of places.

Ever seen aftermath pictures? I go to the Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras sections have gone every year for the last 18 years. A Cat 1 storm cut a new 3/4 mile wide inlet between Frisco and Hatteras a few years ago. Those dunes don't help as much as you would think. Plus, lots of the damage comes from water being pushed out of the sound. No dunes soundside.
