Seth Davis: "[Barnes] had reached out to express his interest"

OK,,,, And?

It means he saw that UCLA had an opening and called them because he wanted to be the coach. I, and I'm sure most others were under the impression that UCLA needed another option once Dixon fell through, so they contacted Barnes. If Barnes reached out first, then UCLA didn't try to steal our coach, they just opened up the door and Barnes walked in himself.

Personally, I think that's a pretty big deal. Is Rick going to try to leave every time a blue blood needs a coach? If Bill Self gets fired for NCAA monkey business, is Rick going to call and express interest? If the NCAA finally drops a bomb on UNC and Williams is shown the door, is Rick going to express interest?

And why is he expressing interest? He's at a school that loves him, he's got great recruiting classes coming in, he's coaching in one of the best current basketball conferences, fans are selling the arena out night after night....

Is he worried because he's losing so much talent this year? Is he worried because Lanier left?

I'll support Rick, still, but that is alarming to me.

Assuming that Barnes reached out to UCLA, how is that any different than a person responding to a job position on LinkedIn?

He expressed interest because UCLA is a better job, a more prestigious job, the PAC 12 is lousy, a $5MM salary, and because he did not feel as appreciated as he thought he should have been....

Now, I do have an issue with the way he handled the press conference last week since that put his current job in a bad light.......

I guess this is going to morph into another topic that will bring out the "beat the dead horse" emojis. What a miserable lot this fanbase is. Does it really matter? Were all of the facts in this article correct, or pure speculation? Will you no longer be his friend? Enquiring minds want to know.

Enquiring minds asked me if you read the last sentence of the post.

If you don't think a Tennessee coach expressing interest in other jobs is a big deal, then more power to you. Some of us see the opportunity for a stable basketball program for the first time in a decade, and find it alarming that the coach behind that stability could have set the program back AGAIN by his own choosing.

I think it’s more the fact we all knew this over a week ago

Not a fan of Seth Davis or Atlantic. Atlantic only wants you to pay for information and subscribe to their site....Seth Davis = Drama Queen that acts like he knows everything at the party but who knows? Maybe he subscribes to Atlantic.

We all want to know, Rick Barnes shoots straight and maybe he just told it like it was and People can't handle the truth. Believe what you want and you still have the bottom line:
Tennessee is improving, Rick Barnes is getting paid, and he is still the coach.....Game Over.
What is done is done......

I see both sides but I’m not upset with Barnes regardless. He is in his 60’s and at the end of his coaching career. Competitive people seek new challenges. I love UT but it’s easier to recruit in LA vs TN and surrounding areas. Either way, I’m glad he is still our coach regardless what the future holds as our program is stable.

So, first, it's called The Athletic.

Second, publications asking readers to pay for content is not a bad thing.

Don't blame him even one little bit for being interested in UCLA. It's the original blue blood and he wouldn't be following a legend. Recruiting wouldn't be difficult and if he put them back on the map he'd probably earn $100 million or more in that market.

Wait...Barnes was interested in coaching UCLA? No way.

Of course he was interested. The article states that Barnes called them, not the other way around. That's what makes this different than just saying he was interested. Barnes actually sought the job out. He doesn't have an agent, so he himself called to say, "hey, I don't know if you've thought of me or not, but I want your open job."

No wonder UCLA didn’t ask permission to talk with Barnes. Barnes has already contacted them.

Either way, whatever side you take, it seems pretty obvious there is a disconnect between Barnes and Fulmer.
