SEC Expansion What If - SDS Article

I know most decisions are revenue-driven. I just don't see how teams from the mid-west belong in the SEC. Next thing you know Clemson will be trying to get into the PAC12. SMH
I just wish we could go back to the way it used to be. If we are going to expand, it should be with a team from the Southeast. JMHO

I think there was a point and time where rumors were circulating that Clemson, FSU and Miami were being courted by the Big 12.

Why was Missouri invited to the SEC?

The television markets of St. Louis (23rd largest media market / metro area in the country) and Kansas City (32nd largest).

Combined with A&M bringing the city of Houston (8th largest), they helped increase the SEC media market’s value. Both raised the value of the then still-being-negotiated SEC Network quite a bit along with any future TV contract negotiations for the conference (netting each of the conference schools and the front offices more money).

When the TV contracts come up for renewal in 3-4 years it's a good bet that OU will either be on the move or will agree to the Big 12 expanding and adding 6 PAC 12 teams...SC, UCLA, Arizona, ASU, Oregon, and UDUB. Now that BOREN is no longer president, OU will kick the Pokes to the curb. I think it's 50-50 that OU would either go to the Big 10 west with Texas or go to the SEC west. Mizzou needs to be in the Big 10. Kansas is also an option with OU whether to the Big 10 or the SEC.

UCF would be an interesting add. Flame away but its still South, its East and in a critical recruiting ground. It may actually sting the Gators a bit and couldn't be worse than Vandy...... lol

Seeing as how UT can’t sting us...sure, go ahead and add UCF.

Can we throw in Memphis too?

They just need to go to 14 team superconferences. Everyone plays everyone. Top dogs play in the playoffs. #2's play #2's in bowls, #3's play #3's, and so on.

Conference with the best bowl records gets home field advantage in all bowls the next year, and in playoffs.

JMO. I think it'd be awesome. Little schools would lose out, but nothing that says there couldn't be a smaller version, or that they couldn't be included in the super conferences.

I don't want to add anything else to the SEC. Heck, nobody asked for A&M and Missouri.

It's laughable to consider Pittsburgh part of the wvu market anyway (tv contract negotiators don't). Pittsburgh is a Steelers market, and a penguins market, and a pirates market. And then Pitt and Penn State much further down the line.
I couldn't speak to that other than to say Penn State fills a 100k stadium every time they play.

To expand the SEC's TV footprint mostly.

Missouri has one major college program and a larger population than SC, LA, AL, KY, AR, and MS. IIRC, Mizzou's enrollment is about 5,000 higher than UT.

Yep, it was all about the money!

Amen. I would say as a current Charlotte/former Pittsburgh resident there are by far more WVU fans in Charlotte than Pittsburgh.

What's this Pirates team you speak of anyway?

Never happen...After they start getting demolished by SEC teams the attendance will fade...not that they are a big draw anyways.

Nope. Houston is no different than Memphis. Urban commuter school and there’s not one in the SEC now. Memphis at least has a following in Shelby County. Nobody in Houston cares about the Cougars. They can’t draw flies.
My wife is from Cady, Tx, near Houston. She says they call The University of Houston "Cougar High".

It was for Mizzou too. I think most around Mizzou were realistic about football and were pleasantly surprised when the had some early success. I think they thought they would do much better in other sports- particularly men's basketball.

The Big 12 is dominated money wise by Texas. A lot of schools didn't react well to the "Longhorn Network".
