Scott, Hendrix and Helm gone (officially per Butch)

I don't want Coach Jones begging kids to stay. I believe they didn't like where they were in the pecking order and decided to leave. I wish them luck but we are recruiting talent and this is not a big deal.

This. Its going to happen at every school.

Did you argue that Jones should get a pass because of depth? You can't have it both ways. Either these losses were acceptable or UT has a depth problem. It can't be both.

There is an issue if these kids were promised starting positions and were lied to. Hendrix is the bigger loss. Scott was being recruited over. Helm is a bit if a mystery but I suspect it had something to do with Alex Ellis.

it would be nice to keep every player that is recruited, especially those with good talent; however that would be perfection which is not expected nor realistic. Those on here acting like this is something coach can and must control to be successful are half empty types. Negative reaction is just how they deal with things that dont suit them.

not alot of DL's are ready to be big contributors coming out of hs

hell even most 5 stars need a yr
Would you rather them stay and hate it here? You ever gone somewhere you thought you'd like but once you got there you didn't like it? Well it happens to athletes too. If they stay and hate it, then they can become cancers or worse. they likely wouldn't help out in recruiting. So calm down and it will take 4 years to build depth. We are in year 2.

As a VFL, I hate that these kids decided to leave the program. However, our coaches are bringing in elite talent. The talent will be replaced. We should not bad mouth these kids for chosing to leave. It's their future and they will have to live with this decision. We as fans have been use to bad recruiting and losing seasons. The future is bright and I feel our program is heading is right direction.

I don't think any coach promises starting positions. I believe it is the normal - you will get your chance to start as a freshman based on practice etc. I'm looking forward to the bowl game and another top 5 recruiting class. I imagine there will be a few signees in next years class who will be disappointed also.

You are stating that my logic is flawed when you base your entire argument on hear-say and non-tangible on the field evidence?

I think they all had potential, as you like to point out. I never said they sucked. At the same time, they were beaten out by other guys in their class. If they are that unhappy about it and not man enough to stay and win time, they wouldn't have done much if they had stayed.

There, I used some of the same conjecture you've been using this entire time.

Vic Wharton got more playing time than Hendrix. That means Wharton is better than Hendrix, right? That's basically what you're saying. Hendrix couldn't possibly be one of the best players because one freshman at his position started ahead of him and lots of other freshmen started at positions that he doesn't play. There's the flaw in your logic. Hendrix might not have been the best, but I have no doubt he was one of the biggest wins in the last recruiting class. Losing him is a huge kick to the nads. Doesn't destroy our class. Doesn't mean the sky is falling. It is a big loss though.

Dude, give it a rest! You sound like a broken record. Butch will be here at least five tears and if you don't like it, go cheer for someone else!

While I am in full support of CBJ and the program I can't stand it when people say things like that. Just because you aren't happy with something doesn't mean you abandon it to find something else. That's like saying my 3 year old pissed his pants in the mall today guess I better go find another kid.

Losing Hendrix hurts, but you have to think that he left because he was jealous of Barnett. There was some rumblings about that anyway.

Then WHY did Hendrix not play more then the other DE on the depth chart other than Barnett.

There is nothing we can do about it unless you want to run out to the parking lot before they finish packing their cars and beg them to stay. We should be happy no starters are leaving and another top 5 recruiting class is coming in. I bet Coach Jones pushed these guys harder than they have ever been pushed in their life and they were backups to other freshmen. It probably is a tough pill to swallow but if it is that or if it is something personal - oh well. Drive on.

Dude, give it a rest! I'll say whatever I want and if you don't like it then go find another place to talk Vol football.

Some of you hang your hat on Butch's recruiting because he has yet to prove he can get it done on the field. Now we see defections from his Top 5 recruiting class and instead of wondering about what the coaches are doing, you attack the players. What the hell kind of sense does that make? Is the sky falling? No, but damn, please stop pumping rainbows out your ass and look at this realistically. It is never good to lose highly rated prospects after their freshman year. For those saying they didn't do much, they're freshman for crying out loud. Guys like Barnett and Hurd are the exceptions, not the norms. Most recruits don't contribute big their freshman years. Most need a little time in the S & C program.

It's not the end of the world, but it's certainly alarming to lose three so close together, and hearing of other possible departures just adds fuel to the fire. Maybe it is as simple as the young men are homesick, or afraid of the depth chart. That's possible. It's also possible the coaches screwed up and did something to provoke the response. For the love of God, stop worshiping all things Butch and remember he's just a man.

Hopefully we bounce back from this quickly with no more defections, and hopefully Butch keeps this year's class together. I have to say, I honestly don't understand the Butch love or the Butch hate. I've been accused of the latter, but honestly, I'm just waiting for him to put together a body of work at UT. When that's in place, it'll speak for itself.

two of the three thought they should have gotten more playing time and it just didn't work out.... then they take a look at the class coming in and see that it isn't going to get any easier.... some folks look at it as a challenge in life, while others quit when faced with adversity.... the hard facts are these are all high profile kids coming out of high school use to being the star and center of attention and playing all the time. Some can cope with sitting and earning a spot while others are not mature enough yet to understand that just because you were a star in high school, doesn't mean all of a sudden they are just going to "give" you a starting role in college.... we will be OK and they will be replaced with someone else.
With all that said, I will truly be shocked if Sawyers bails after one year....

You do understand that under the recruiting rules UT probably can't use those scholarships in the next class, right?

This IS a big deal. Whether it was something that happened at UT or just a flaw in the recruiting profile being used by the coaches... this hurts. It hurts depth if nothing else. It hurts the "experience" of the next two teams at a minimum.

The main excuses for not winning more have been youth, depth, and talent. Well, this hurts ALL OF THOSE.

So if you are looking for an excuse in the future... you can't have those... you said this wasn't a big deal.

Losing Scott? No. Not a big deal. One player. Unhappy. It happens. Losing Henderson? You're going to lose guys to academics. But Hendrix and Helm leaving are nothing but bad.

Helm and Scott were injury prone. Neither showed that spark when they did get a chance. Hendrix I am not sure of, but when a walk on beats you out for playing time when you are touted as a 4 to 5 star TE, then something is amiss, and not with the coaching staff.

If our OL play doesn't improve next year, I'll cry a hell of a lot more than five tears.

We are building depth. Not sure what you mean. How much depth did Scott provide this year? Jones has one official recruiting class. Look who came to practice today. Kumara for Scott and Phillips for Hendrix. With Tuttle and Mack on the way... We have to look to the future. Butch gets a temp pass. He has to make team 119 count! Go Vols!!

I can tell you right now Scott would never be a feature back at tennessee.

And you got this from 5 minutes of watching a true freshman play behind an absolutely porous offensive line? I'm not saying he was going to be an all time great. I'm just saying I seriously doubt you saw enough to make any assumption.

Nah, he was liberating. I now realize that there is no harm and potentially much good in respectful criticism and honest recognition of things that are not good.

Eh, I'll be an eternal optimist, but I try to keep things in perspective a bit better in regards to UT football.
