He recognised he no longer had the passion and decided to hang it up. Shouldnt have done it mid season like he did but it was time for him.

Spurrier was able to do that because of a once-in-a-generation core of talent that came out of the state of South Carolina starting in about 2009. Marcus Lattimore, Alshon Jeffery, Stephon Gilmore, Clowney, etc. People kind of forget that Spurrier's first 5 years there were pretty middling, and many (including myself) were wondering if he had it anymore. Then the state put out a relatively incredible amount of talent over about a 3-4 year period and Spurrier got most of it, to his credit, and they went on the best 4-year run in the history of the program.

The problem for South Carolina is that 1) that surge of in-state talent happening again anytime soon and 2) even if it did, most of it would go to Clemson and Georgia. That is a very, very difficult job. They are not a traditional power, play Clemson and Georgia every year, and they do have some level of expectation. It isn't like UK where they are just happy to make bowls. They started warming up Muschamp's seat after his 3rd season, and he had made a bowl every year to that point.
