SC Paper suprised TN is EAST Pick?

I hate to go there, but you do realize that for much of the last decade the Tennessee athletic program has been a complete dumpster fire.

Now we have Gator fans sticking up for Tigers. If that's not proof Tennessee has taken the spotlight this year, I'm not sure what is -- and it's glorious.

They're trying to get some last few jabs in before we take over. They see it coming.

The AD who just left was a joke. He botched an investigation of our softball team.

Even the great Jeremy Maclin (not a very outspoken player) said he was glad the AD Rhoades was gone. A few other former players agreed.

This is not a bad day for MU nation, to say the least

No...part of the collective "bad day" dating back a year. :)

So it's impossible for Tennessee to get back to the top where they belong after being down? And how stupid to think we can turn the corner after losing 4 games by a combined 17 points (3 of those losses to top 10 teams). UT also returns 17 starters on top of all of that. I don't see any reason at all why UT is being picked to win the East........

Nope, no reason at all :whistling:

I'm going to just go ahead and apologize now for what Mizzou football is about to become for the next decade. Your pinnacle wasn't that high, so the fall won't hurt too badly. But even Vandy's 4-5 win teams are likely going to look forward to playing Mizzou for awhile.

Nobody's out-Vandying Vandy.

Except for maybe South Carolina, proud owners of the only 0-11 season by an SEC team in conference history.

Remember how terrible Arkansas was because they lost 16 straight SEC games over those 3 seasons? The Razorbacks at least still beat their out of conference opponents. The Gamecocks just flat out went on a 21-game losing streak against all of their opponents.

I agree with the record but I think UF will win it again. I think we lose to UA, aTm, and SCAR.

We've won the last 3 games by a combined 8 points. For those wins we need a miracle catch, a miracle comeback, and a miracle fumble. Laugh all you want but until I see us blow them out I'm going to worry our miracles have run out. Oh and Butch is 0-2 against Muschamp

And Muschamp's taking over a pretty depleted program. Depleted enough that even Steve Spurrier just threw his hands up in the middle of the season and said "F this. I'm done with this sh-t" and left (heck, it was depleted enough that they even made Missouri's awful-beyond-words, Division-II-level offense look like it was actually FBS level).

I see this being more honest than condescending. We have some sensitive folks on this board.

I guess I've just seen a whole lot worse on this board from opposing fans. I just didn't think this post warranted such Jimmie rustling and teeth gnashing. But if that's your thing, go for it.

Yeah, after reading, am a bit inclined to agree.

Take it easy on the Missouri fan guys. I'd be in a bad mood too if my school had no chancellor, no president, an AD who just left for Baylor (of all places), and a first year football coach.

And wasn't their basketball program recently in trouble with the NCAA?

Yeah, they enacted a postseason ban from the NCAA tournament.

Not that it mattered since Frank Haith managed to wreck that program, from conference champs to like 9-wins total level in just over 3 years.

I'm just surprised they read the paper in SC!

EXACTLY what the people in South Carolina say about the people in Tennessee, and the people in Georgia say about the people in Alabama, and the people in Alabama say about the people in Florida, and so on...I've lived in three southern states, and I've learned ignorance doesn't recognize state lines.

yeah just like when they were up 2 tds late in 2014 and especially in 2013 when we beat them when they was a top 20 team and we was a top 50 team.

Come on now guys. Some of us live in SC so its not all bad. The last 3 games against these guys were all nail biters. I hope we can pull out more decisive wins this year and against FL and Bama too.

If Bob Shoop makes as much difference as many think he will in improving the defense and the Vols are not decimated with injuries (you just never know)
I see a 10 win season if not better

Only 2 things can stop us this year, lots of injuries and lack of a decent passing game. This Tennessee Train is leaving the station & it will blow right on through Atlanta. No reason, other than what I stated, that we won't be a playoff team. We don't have to be a great passing team just enough to keep from being one-dimensional and predictable. We did a good job last season opening holes up for our backs and blocking and we should be stronger & better there too. Take care of the ball & off we go. The turn around in our special teams from only a couple of years ago is tremendous.
This team will be rolling. :dance2:

Jimmie status:

[ ] Rustled
[x] Unrustled

I didn't mean your original post. Really was referring to the Mizzou fans post that stated pretty much what I've heard from everyone else around the country. Can this team close games and play at a championship level? I tend to believe they can and will. But saying we haven't shown that yet isn't cause to get so bent out of shape.

Have to disagree with some of those points. There would have,or should have, been a pass interference call on North's catch as you could clearly see the defender holding his other arm down. Also, that wasn't a "miracle fumble", the ball was stripped and was an excellent play by Foreman. The comeback can be debated either way honestly, to me it looked like we adjusted and Carolina choked a bit. Losing to Muschamp had everything to do with Florida and nothing to do with him. Imo

After living in Nashville, I moved to Columbia, SC in the late 80's they did a much better job than The Tennessean covering HS football and athletics in general.

Don't knock the state too much because your momma and daddy's relatives may have come thru that way originally. Just saying because the east coast is generally where most of us likely originated that settled in TN.

They bring valid points that can't really be argued. Love me some Vols but they gotta start beating their rivals.

Go Vols :rock::rock::rock:

The fumble was a good play but you can't and shouldn't expect turnovers to stop drives. They were driving and the D didn't have an answer until that play. Foreman made a great play but that ball comes out maybe 10% of the time.
I think the miracle in 2014 was not being flagged for roughing the QB when Barnett dragged him and then O'Brien pushed him. Luckily the officials didn't want to decide the outcome of that game, but if happened against someone like Bama there would have been a flag

Columbia SC paper is skeptical of TN as the East pick:

Tennessee Volunteers football favored to win SEC East | The State

This mirrors the attitude of the fans down here in SC. They think TN is way overhyped and will likely win 8 games again.

While I think we are better than that, I do believe this team is a little over hyped.

Let me ask you this; If a sports writer for a newspaper in Columbia, SC was not skeptical of Tennessee, how many people would continue buying that paper there, or reading his column? This guy is just playing to his audience during the off season. Just like his counterparts in Gainesville, Athens, or Lexington would. They all have to stroke the fans interest a little in July.

Take it with a grain of salt, and let us know what he is saying in October. That is when it matters.

All of mine came down from Virginia, so I have a license to knock.

But of course they do a better job covering HS sports than the Tennessean. The Tennessean is more focused on it's agendas rather than actual news. And it will continue as long as enough "sheople" subscribe.

But yes, it is high time some streaks were broken.

Solid things to point out. I agree that up until the strip it dang sure looked like it was going to atleast go to overtime and even then it shouldn't have had to come to that. I still think the biggest reason Barnett didn't get flagged for roughing is because Dylan Thompson was flopping all game and nagging at the refs, otherwise that flag prolly gets thrown.

I'm surprised that they have newpapers in SC! Do they really?

They do now. Last town Cryer retired in Columbia this spring. They had to replace him with something. Things are starting to move quickly though. They have plans to open a telegraph office by 2019 at the latest.
