"Running up the score"

One of the announcers today went well out of his way to say he didn't agree with Tennessee throwing the ball around and running up the score with the game in hand (I think there was about 3-5 min left in the 4th).

I'm sorry but Dormady busts his ass way too hard in practice to come in when the game is over and hand it off 3 times. Also, the same announcer made the comment "why don't you work the back ups in earlier in the game (before its essentially over)." Well, dumb*** you answered your own question. The game isn't over and we need our best players on the field to ensure we win. The other announcer totally got this concept and I really think I could hear him making a "pffft (can you believe this guy)" type sound under his breath while the other idiot was blabbing.

Who cares? It's football. Our 2nd string doing its job and getting some reps against another team is a good thing. Also, bringing in the 2nd string with 10-ish minutes left was plenty early.

There is no running up the score. Ever. The difference between you getting ranked higher or looked at by scouts is in the extra throws or returned interceptions late in a game. This is a game.. And you play to win. If you don't want it to happen to you, stop them from doing it.

WTF are they supposed to do when they get to the goal line, take four knees? Get the announcer a participation trophy so no one hurts his feelings.

If you don't want us to run up the score, stop them. If not......TD TENNESSEE

The other announcer chimed in about giving the backups a chance a play. Besides, at the rate we play NW it'll be 2035 before we see them again.

What the heck else are we supposed to do? We were standing on their 3 yard line with about 5 minutes left. Just stand there and take a smoke break? There was nowhere else to go except the end zone. If you don't want us to score, stop us. We've got our backups in for pete's sake.

Completely agree. Also I believe in QUALITY reps for the backups. That means throwing the ball and executing the full offense. The classy thing to do is to take most of your play clock prior to snapping, which we did every time.

I believe Palmer responded saying he had no problem with it, and it is the defense's job to stop them from scoring.

Then one of them, don't know which one, said "You shouldn't play football if your afraid of getting your feelings hurt."

I actually laughed when I heard that.

Lol yes, I almost forgot about that comment - it was great. All around great day to be a vol

Well watching the Rose Bowl I'm pretty sure I saw a scrolling banner that said our water boy just threw a touch down pass to one of our cheerleaders (a female cheerleader...) and they are now changing the official score of the game to 52-6.

Might have mis-read it, not sure

I don't believe in phoning in drives when the game is in hand. Put your second string in and show them some respect and play your full game. This is a chance for those guys to go out and make the fans and coaches say "Wow that kid can play, let's get him on the field more."

If Northwestern had the opportunity to get a win over an SEC team in blowout fashion they would have done the same thing. We expected to win this game. A Northwestern win would have been a "program defining" win for them

Stanford is up 38-16 with 2 min to go in the game and they just threw a 50+ yard bomb for a TD...

If you don't like being scored on, then play defense and stop it.

If you don't want the team beating you to keep scoring then you should stop trying to score as well. If you only run the ball into the line and the other team is still throwing deep then I'll agree that they are running it up. But if you are still attempting to score and are throwing the ball into the endzone then you are agreeing that the game is still on and everything is still fair, including defensive touchdowns.
