Ruby Whitehorn dismissed from the team!

She was never suspended from school on the other charge, only from the team. It did not rise to the level of the student conduct board because the behavior did not involve another student and did not occur on campus. Slight possibility that this would because she was cited by a UTPD officer, but it’s still a fairly minor charge, one that hundreds of UT students faced last year.

I really hope your right that she gets to stay with the team. I really can't see it happening because of the closeness of the incidents. There is no charges filed in a lot of states unfortunately not the case in Tennessee. My thinking is that the majority of the team would totally be for her to get to stay. All the talk about how she has been a leader through pre-season practice. Still my first thought is that Coach Kim will dismiss her from the team. I totally want to be wrong on this.

Volfan2012, I think you are right. CKC made it a point of emphasis that she really considered not reinstating Ruby and that Ruby had to do a lot of work to earn her spot back.

In this context, a minor infraction is actually a big damn deal in terms of team discipline. Barring some extraordinary set of extenuating circumstances (like she was rushing an emergency shipment of medical marijuana to her ailing grandmother), I can't see how CKC keeps her on the roster without undermining her entire disciplinary structure. Better to lose one good player than an entire team.

PS, I just thought that Ruby much praised leadership role could be a mitigating factor in CKC's decision but "being a leader" also implies having the responsibility of setting a good example. Just not sure how you square that leadership role with this legal infraction.

Violence, (yeah, kicking in someone’s door is violent), drugs, (yeah, getting caught with illegal marijuana will get you in trouble), weaving while driving, (yeah, doing this, especially at 4:31am, will almost certainly get the attention of cops), all of these stupid choices, especially while on probation, will bring trouble to you and any friends that may be with you at the time. If you are a parent, you probably don’t want your kid hanging out with this type of person, good player or not. Yeah, it could almost certainly affect recruiting, and yes, it’s a bad look for the school that excuses it. I hated to lose Zaay, this is much more. There are schools where winning is all that matters, we’ll see.

Since Ruby was not charged with a DUI, her alleged "weaving" could have been due to being distracted on her phone or the like (PSA - don't drive and text) but, we should also acknowledge that Ruby would not be the first young black person who gets pulled over for a "questionable" probable cause.

Look, I got a white Boy son that was stopped by Knoxville’s finest at 2 am in the morning after dancing and HAD not been drinking. He was headed to cookout on strip and officer said when light turned green he did not go quick enough and he thought he had fell asleep. My son said he had went as soon as the light changed and he verified nothing in intersection.

Point, it don’t take much for a cop to stop any kid regardless of color/sex in KnoxVegas after midnight.

Way more important things here than whether Ruby plays basketball again anytime soon. Such as whether she avoids a sentence for blatantly violating probation. And most of all what in the universe caused her to make such a brain dead, self destructive decision as to be riding dirty at 4 a.m. with literally everything at stake.

Obviously lessons were not learned before. IMO, basketball doesn’t enter the conversation until the way more serious issues are worked through. I wish Ruby and her family good luck.

I see it the opposite way. If they boot a player over a weed ticket whose only other offense was an agreed dismissal of an ultimately bogus domestic charge, it'll do a lot more to wreck the locker room and recruiting than keeping her would.

Somewhat related, I saw documentary on racial profiling and they interviewed several cops (identities disguised of course) who all stated that they can find a reason any time they want to justify a traffic stop. Your example of taking "too long" to move when the light turns green nicely demonstrates how arbitrary these so-called traffic infractions can be.

In our family nothing good happens after midnight so there is no reason to not be in by that time. Additionally, break rules and the car keys go away. I realize Ruby is not a teenager but she is acting very immaturely and if the car had been under “parent impoundment”. We would not be having this conversation. Just MO.

There is no way at college they are never going to be out after midnight, the question is what does yours do after midnight. I mean come on can’t even go to the 9 pm basketball game that ends in OT and still be home by midnight.

Teach them right and hope they never slip up and pray a lot is all you can do.

Heard a well known national preacher on FamilyLife one time say he raised two children both the same way and one didn’t stray and one made very bad choices but fortunately came around. The Bible shows us this principle in the prodigal son, sometimes the parent did everything right and kid still makes bad choices.

It’s not about a bag of weed, or how much weed was in the bag. It’s about doing whatever you want and ignoring the possible consequences, ignoring your warnings that you need to avoid trouble to stay on the team, and it’s about a lack of respect for authority including your Coach, and it shows a total lack of appreciation to be so lucky as to get paid for playing basketball at Tennessee.

Our seniors voted no on allowing a member back onto the team after missing summer two-a-days to work to support a child. Adult decisions…

@chuckiepoo i would agree with you for first offense but now it is up to University then Coach then team.

The first time maybe the team is primary now they get last say.

Ruby had her divot now it is more serious. We are what, 30 days from her absolution and resumption of activities?

I’ve never said to boot her or keep her. I don’t know enough about the situation to have an informed opinion. I’ll leave that to people who are informed and are in position to make a decision. My only concern at this point is for Ruby the person, not the player.

Everyone has an opinion on matters like this when they happen. Some want it to be a clear cut decision every time, lots of that going on here. I have found in life, however unpopular it may be, every situation is unique, and therefore the response has to be well measured and appropriate for each situation. I also think you have the right coach to determine what is best in this case, for everyone involved. Let her make the decision and then support it.

I think the coach will have an input but the ultimate decision will be the AD's. Athletics and athletes are representatives of their schools. That is especially true for high visibility programs like UT.

Whitehorn was changed and arrested I in August for aggravated burglary and domestic assault.

In court , she pleaded guilty to trespassing and aggravated vandalism.

She was granted judicial diversion which means she needs to stay out of trouble for 11 months before her charges are expunged.

All of the three paragraphs was in wbir article.

On the comments in Facebook articles some where saying Ruby might have face August charges and the new simple possession when she goes to court.
Which I believe might be case also.

Tennessee cut lose a point guard think her name was Green.
And she went to another university and didn't have anymore trouble. That we know of.

Maybe Kim will not play Ruby for 1/4 1/3 /1/2 of the season if her legal trouble gets solved or she cut her lose.

Most important she doesn't get in more trouble and turn her career around like Green.
Here or somewhere else.

If her parents had that power, maybe it would stop this form of self-destruction. However, her arrest is just a symptom of something larger, so it would come out in other ways like it has before. Also, Ruby very possibly makes more money than her parents, so she probably has more power than them in these things.
