Ruby Whitehorn cited for simple possession after game

I hurt for Ruby, because something inside her is so unresolved that she's being self-destructive sabotoging her future.

I hurt for the coaching staff, because you can't coach without being deeply, emotionally invested in each of your players. They'd do anything to protect their girls, but when a player is hurting herself, about the best you can do as a coach or teacher or counselor is to not become an enabler.

I hurt for her teammates, remembering in the postgame presser how eagerly and emphatically Barker and Pauldo defended Ruby and bragged on her leadership. Their loyalty, love and support weren't enough to save a friend, and that's always devastating the first time you realize that as a young person.

I've lost students who I'd counseled and encouraged, who seemed to get it together and I believed they were going to make it. It's always a gut punch followed by days of heartache. But the best outcome that comes to memory was such a boy, who got himself kicked out and sent home to the other side of the country before Christmas. But dadgum if he didn't show up for graduation that May, positive and smiling, just so he could see his friends and classmates graduate! And they loved seeing him again, too!

I don't think Ruby can finish at Tennessee playing basketball. But if she can keep the relationships while she figures out what's going on inside, that would be about as good an ending as the middle of this story will allow.
Sad, sad evening.

Not Hayes I'm talking about. This girl went on to play for a couple of other schools.., at least one was sec school. Someone will remember her name.
It was Zaay Green. I think she was busted smoking pot at the SEC tournament and given another chance and then she was arrested a few months later and was dismissed from the team. It was during Kellie’s tenure and Kellie didn’t have a choice. She was dismissed by administration

I just don’t think weed is that big of a deal. But I understand that she already was on thin ice and it makes her and the program look bad. I’ll support whatever Coach decides. Selfishly I hope she is just suspended for a month or two.
I’ve seen a lot of posts on Twitter saying this same thing (about weed). To me, it’s not the substance as much as the being stopped at 4:30 am cuz weaving in & out of lanes. So she drive while impaired. Weed was the charge but a lot of bad choices here.

Way more important things here than whether Ruby plays basketball again anytime soon. Such as whether she avoids a sentence for blatantly violating probation. And most of all what in the universe caused her to make such a brain dead, self destructive decision as to be riding dirty at 4 a.m. with literally everything at stake.

Obviously lessons were not learned before. IMO, basketball doesn’t enter the conversation until the way more serious issues are worked through. I wish Ruby and her family good luck.

Agree I think Ruby is probably gone and it won't be Kim's decision. It's unfortunate but more important she get her issues under control. Maybe she can come back next season.

I'm worried about Ruby's life path from here. If she is dismissed from the team, that discipline and structure that she desperately needs won't be there. She will have nothing in her life to fill her time which could lead to even more bad decisions or heaven forbid, more dire and drastic decisions. This next year could determine the direction of the rest of her life. We can only hope it's a wakeup call and she turns her life around and makes better decisions.

She seems to not care about the discipline and structure that's in place as it is. She's an adult, time to act like one.

Someone help me out here. I'm trying to figure out how Ruby could plead not guilty to the charge if the weed was found in her car and measured later. Would a "not guilty" plea be suggesting there was no weed and a huge mistake has been made because the police found and measured the 5.59 grams of Italian seasoning she was taking to a friend to make a giant cauldron of spaghetti sauce? (😉) Or that she didn't know the weed was in the car? Or that it wasn't hers?

Does it matter under the law whose car it is and who was driving it when the weed was found? I assume Ruby was driving but am not sure. I also hope her bestie Zee was safely in her own apartment at that hour getting some sleep and not with Ruby. In a traffic stop where weed is found inside the vehicle, are all occupants of the vehicle cited, or just the driver?

I am extremely ignorant of all this. And still struggling to believe this has happened. Again.Wednesday night at the game I was telling my group how happy I was that Ruby was going to end up being a tremendous success story, and today I'm worried she'll have to continue her life journey AFTER serving some time in jail. Ugh.

should we as well give baseball players a 4th strike,,,NBA'ers a 7th foul...Golfers an uncounted stroke (mulligan notwithstanding)?

..."Caldwell described the decision as difficult, requiring her to balance her duty to protect the team's brand with her role as a coach to young people who make mistakes. Whitehorn was given a severe penalty, and the team was prepared to move on without her if she had not been willing to meet the standards required for her return."

I just hope the decision comes from Kim and not Danny or anyone forcing her hand. . . I think back to my mom saying "just wait until your dad gets home"....I loved mom for this but was not intimidated by her in the least during those years

I see what you are getting at, but frankly, I'd rather avoid a situation where Kim could end up feeling guilty for having to make a decision to dismiss a player. As a young parent she really doesn't need the stress and guilt hanging over her. Obviously she SHOULDN'T feel guilty if she has to dismiss a player for clearly breaking team rules, but "shouldn't" doesn't always mean "won't" in reality.

I'd rather it not fall on Kim right now. She's got enough to worry about already.

I’m not sure how it works if someone else in the car claims possession. But if the weed wasn’t visible or wasnt smelled, or if Ruby wasn’t obviously impaired, they wouldn’t have gone looking for it. That means really big legal problems for her, no matter what Greg Isacson (the best criminal defense attorney in Knoxville) says.

I don’t think this is going to be in Kim’s hands. She may dismiss her to make a statement, but Im afraid Knox Co is going to be in charge of Ruby’s availability. She’ll at the very least be on some kind of monitoring that will forbid travel for breaking the felony probation deal.

Thought all the felony charges were dropped and replaced with lessor charges. Bad memory?

The university has rules on this and they can suspend her from school if not already, like they did on the other charges. Along with the university student rules and the police/courts I don't think Kim will be in the decision process for her future at UT unless suspending her from the team is just a formality.

Playing for one of the top teams in the country, nominated for prestigious award, fame, nil money , future with the game, wnba or overseas ,travel, no degree, and so much more. Retail or food service future now. Sad and such a waste.
