(RS) FR TE Julian Nixon enters the transfer portal

This is the time of year (during the latter days of and just after the end of spring camp) when lads who have been told they're pretty low in the pecking order for playing time go looking for a new place where their chances are better.

There's another window like this, in the latter days of fall camp (but before the fall semester mandatory sign-up day arrives).

Wish the lad well, hope he finds success at his next stop as long as it is outside the SEC.

Go Vols!

If he is low on the pecking order at Tennessee does this pretty much mean he will have to drop a level to find a team that will offer a spot ? Seems risky to me to give up a scholarship.

Yeah, from one perspective it is risky.

But from another perspective, maybe not. There are more variables in this equation than just good-bad. The lad's upbringing in the game of football may have given him skill sets that don't match well with the offensive approach Heupel & Co use. Or, it could have been a personality clash.

Neither of those reasons would indicate he has to drop to a lower tier of the sport to find success. Only get to a different team, with different players and coaches, and perhaps a different offensive philosophy.

We'll never know in detail what caused Nixon or the other lads seeking to transfer right now to believe their chances are better elsewhere. Just gotta acknowledge that they weren't likely to get meaningful playing time here, and wish them well at wherever they end up--as long as it's not one of our rivals, heh.

A little off topic, but, not completely - Can players enter the portal to look for NIL money? Can they get NIL money from their school to keep them from traneferring?

They can not get NIL money from their school, no. That's forbidden. Universities can not play any role in NIL deals.

But yes, players can look for NIL deals. They can do it at any time. Including when they're in the portal to transfer to another school.

And yes, they could conceivably get a new (or improved) NIL contract that would entice them not to leave their current location. From any third party.

But no, not from the school.

Yes.

I tend to think this is more about money than playing time.... but I'm not an insider or anything. I think this guy would get playing time (although, maybe not start next season), if he stayed.

Sometimes no matter how hard you work you just can't move up the depth chart but to a (RS) FR, I say patience grasshopper, put in the work.

Probably just testing the portal to see what type of interest he gets. They've reported that 50% of players end up staying at their current school. As long as the portal allows players to test free agency every year, why wouldn't you? I would expect in the future most players will enter the portal every year. It's in their best interest.

Not gonna act like it’s the end of the world because it isn’t. But I really like Nixon coming out of high school…. as a guy who’s favorite position to scout is WR/TE it just sucks that he never had a real opportunity at PT

"sux that he never had a real opportunity at PT." What am I missing? He's a redshirt freshman, correct? He's got four years to play.

Not surprised. He suffered a knee injury in high school and gained lot of weight. It was thought that he would fully recover and could play because , in high school, he had really good hands. I think he has lost some weight, but he has been dropping a lot of passes. He was never an outstanding blocker so I guess he was not going to see a lot of action.
