RPI Discussion.

I won't touch the Martin can't coach comment, all I'll say is this. If he couldn't coach he wouldn't have his team on pace to finish in the top 5 of a major conference for the 3rd year in a row. He may not be the best coach, but he's far from the worst, and that's evidenced by the last 3 years.

Now...as for tomorrow's game. It's a big opportunity game, not to the level of @kentucky or @ Florida, but as you mentioned it's technically a game they COULD lose and not be a season ender. However, this is a game they should win, a game that if they want to get ahead of the bubble need to win, and a game that quite frankly they ought to win.
He'll make a fine coach in a low or mid major program.
Unless you're happy with the drama every season.
This was an AP preseason #26 team. Should be ranked and waltzing into the dance.

Yes, they were. However, they're not right now. Considering there was a bigger meltdown on here than there was for Y2K, he's got this team in a good position. It all comes down to how they handle this position.

So now we've lowered the expectations to be a 'top 5 finish of a major conference' 3 years in a row? Is that how we define success around here??

I think it's just to make the dance.
That's why we don't want to play the Iowas or Novas at Atlantis or the UCLAs if we make it.
Can we get some more UTEPs. Oh wait.

The seasons far from over. They go on a February run similar to the 1st two seasons and they'll end up right around those preseason predictions.

What did the other poll have them at, because it wasn't 26th...

Is that what my post said?

You read what you want to read it seems, so I'm not sure why I'm even gonna attempt conversing with you, but here goes...

All I was saying was that he finished top 5 it would appear 3 years in a row in the SEC. Look at the other coaches in the SEC that haven't done that, and I think it says something. There's a lot of coaches who by their peers are considered "good coaches" who haven't finished top 5 each of the last 3 years.

Without looking I'm guessing the only are coaches to do it are Cal and Donovan. Most think Frank Martin is a good coach but he hasn't done it. Most thought Anthony Grant was a Homerun hire, he hasn't done it.

Coaches poll was #30.

My point is that we should not consider finishing in the top 5 of the conference as our barometer of success. I believe we all agree that making the tourney is what defines success for college bball coaches.
If along with the potential 3 straight top 5 finishes in the conference we had made the tourney a couple of times, then I would agree with you.
Bottom line...I have very little confidence in CCM's ability to get this program to the level where we're not talking about bubble or not, but instead talking about how high of a seed we're going to be.

I feel the same. He should've done better than what he has done so far.

I agree with all of this, but IMO that doesn't mean he's some horrible coach IMO. A horrible coach is one that can't make it in the profession, obviously you're a pretty decent coach if you can go toe to toe with the big bigs and can do pretty well.

Like I said, Zo may not work here, but I don't think he's nearly as horrible of a coach as many on here would lead you to believe.

I agree, he's not a horrible coach. Wade Houston he is not, thank goodness. However, I'm afraid at this point that he's closer to Buzz caliber than Bruce caliber. I hope I'm wrong and that he grows into the job sooner rather than later.

What's now time?
I don't get what you're saying?

We were preseason 26 according to a poll, and are currently 25th according to a poll.

No?
It's February.
Do or die.
Sitting at RPI 44. From here you can end up in the 50s or 60s or play to your potential and lock it in at the 30s.

I think he's somewhere in the middle, but agree with your general premise.

So in other words this team very well could end up around what the original predictions were?

No comment on the 25 ranking according to KP?

If you want to press it, you're admitting this team has the potential to finish as a 6 or 7 seed.
Coaching will determine whether they play to that expectation or continue to bounce around and end up chasing the bubble.

I've never wavered that this team has that potential have I?

And as of today they're off the bubble.

See, you talk always in coulds and shoulds.
Trying to pin you down.
Will 'not the worst coach' walk his team into the NCAA with heads up as a 6 or 7 seed, back them in off the bubble or miss it altogether.
If it's a top 25 team, what's going to happen?

If I had to bet, I say they get in as around a 10 seed and the grumblings for both side will continue.
