I still can't believe Heupel had this kid behind Turrentine last year and let him walk while giving Boo Carter more NIL money.

Then you play Merk in front of GMac all year knowing that Merk can't compete at this level and will transfer out.

Now no one knows what GMac is capable of. Remember the Milton/Hooker deal? Well Milton practiced better but Hooker ended up being better in game.

Now there's lots of of NIL tied up in Faizon and GMac and probably not enough for a high quality portal QB without hindering the needed defensive portal additions.
Nobody knows how much money we have. Calm down.

Months ago, Austin Price said Merklinger would not be at Tennessee in January.

The coaches already knew he couldn't play at this level.

Yet, they still wasted snaps on him while a paid QB sat on the bench.

In this era, you can't have a decent chunk of your NIL sitting on the bench. Now, Tennessee will have Faizon and GMac on the bench with the possibility of having to make a mediocre transfer portal addition at QB.

The era of letting kids physically mature is over. Brent or Austin (can't remember which) has alluded to the fact that GMac didn't put forth the effort to gain weight that he should have.

He is doing better now.
How do you know other teams don’t have chunks of NIL money in the bench? Oh yeah you don’t.

You're right, I'm not going through every teams roster.

However, that's not the point of this post.

Why are we wasting snaps on Merklinger when we have a prized QB sitting on the bench?

It's a message board meant for discussion. If you don't like it, you're more than welcome to not click the thread.

I am not a large donor booster although I do donate a decent amount.

Do you see no issue with the Merk and GMac situation?
It’s by design.

If GMAC were smart he would hit the transfer portal tomorrow.

Oh, I agree. To further your point, gave us an even better chance than the original QB that was supposed to have been here.
I mean Heupel always has been the best guy plays. Sometimes they pick the wrong guy like Milton over Hooker but he don’t care about a starter being a freshman. GMac was a unique situation; I’ve seen the height/weight arguments and bring bray up. Bray was much bigger physically than George, it’s not even close.

I imagine Bammer fans were yammering the same sentiments about Simpson. And considering how much better a QB he is compared to Millie? Whose head should be chopped? No, Simpson stuck to it and ignored the peanut gallery=NFL millions. A high speed connection is wasted on the experts. 😴

Why? Bc Heupel followed the plan the staff and Macintyre family agreed on before the season started?
Except that he did play some.
So why put Merklinger over him? We all saw it in the spring and fall that GMAC was way better. Even Austin Price mentioned that yesterday

You play Nico his true freshman season in the Bowl game but not GMAC? Was Nico so big and strong? Same deal- Aguilar last potential college game vs Milton. And Heupel decided to play Nico. But not GMAC.

I’ve been saying this the whole time. GMAC will never start a game a Tennessee. Faizon is his guy.

SMH. Again this was discussed before season. George never played any meaningful snaps. He was put in to get used to the environment but he never was going to run the offense against real competition period. He was better than Merk but getting him injuried before he was physically ready was the concern.

Nico wasn’t huge. He’s much bigger than George though.

It's not easy to manage a football roster especially when it's fully of 18+ year olds...but we also had the Banks incident which seemingly cost us the SC loss and likely a playoff game and apparently let Nico and his Dad hang around too long (Ohio St. was really good but our O-line played like Nico had gotten handsy with their gf's just before the game...no one seemed interested in really blocking for him).

I couldn't agree more, CJH seems to get caught up in who's been here the longest far more than I like. I agree he needs to gain weight but the coaching staff should have been pushing this everyday and insuring he maintained the diet necessary to achieve their goals. There is a long history of players playing at a weight people thought would cause injury but he needed to play THIS year when the opportunities presented themselves to assess whether he would be a true option next year or not. Merk had his chances and quickly proved he wasn't the future. He didn't need to play entire games but he did need to play and run the full offense. I like CJH but have never been happy with them giving the number 2's the opportunity to prove themselves thereby leaving us unprepared after the ones lost their availability due to being senior or entering the draft. You need to know the #2 will be capable or you have done a disservice to the team.

Next year is going to be a rough year. 9 conference games, new QB, installing new defense, etc.

Best thing we can do is just go in and expect it to be a retooling year.

That being said, I want us to determine who our QB is for the next 2-3 years and make that person the starter to learn the system so hopefully they will master the offense at the same time the defense starts to show top 10-20 stats.

We are not going to be successful long-term with the rent-a-QB strategy.
All players are rentals in NIL. That's why I'm not confident in Knowles. Any system that isn't plug and play and takes multiple seasons to fully grasp is now obsolete. Heup better understand this soon but getting a stubborn guy like Knowles tells me he and Danny can't see the direction the sport is quickly taking.

I said he left in the spring of 2025. Take you own advice.
I’m gonna type this slow so maybe you’ll understand, the original person that I had replied to was talking about them playing the best players and I ask who that would be, and you brought up Thomas and I said he wasn’t here but that they had made a mistake by not trying to keep him if they could. Where all this other crap that you’re talking about came fromI have no idea. There I hope that helps.

Just about every playoff team still in has a rent-a-quarterback
