Roster Construction 2026

Ariel Antigua is crushing the ball in the Appy League. He’s hitting .565 with an OPS 1.368 in 46 plate appearances with 5 doubles, a triple, and a HR. Only 3 Ks and a fielding % of 1.000 mostly at SS but with a couple of games at 2B. Extremely impressive and if he stays healthy, he will be TN’s starting SS in 26.

Nice.

Kiley McDaniel (ESPN) has Schoolcraft rated as the #29 MLB draft prospect and had this to say about him.

"The biggest risk to end up not signing in this group is Schoolcraft. There are a handful of teams that I think would pay him a bonus in line with slots in the twenties (which I think is the asking price), but there are also a number of teams that aren't close to that because of concerns about his breaking ball. The Padres and White Sox are his two most rumored landing spots."

About Appenzeller at #79.

"Some high schoolers known to be very tough signs are Brock Sell, Jayden Stroman, Marco Paz, Reagan Ricken, Brock Ketelsen and Nico Partida. Closer to 50/50 odds to sign are: Nick Becker, Jordan Yost, Jack Bauer, Ryan Mitchell, Alec Blair, Cam Appenzeller, Aiden Stillman, Parker Rhodes and Michael Winter. There are some others with $1 million to $1.5 million bonus demands that I think will be met, but there are always a handful of players with a smaller group of teams on them, and those teams just run out of money before they can pay all of their targets."

I found this quote pretty interesting considering our roster is still going to be pretty young next year compared to the teams Tony has had that were most successful. Guess its hard to be experienced when you have a lot of guys leaving for the draft every year and several of them draft eligible true sophomores.

Notes from Joe Doyle interview on Diamond Vols Pod:

1. Sounds like Appenzeller really had a dip in velo this spring and it’s making teams wary to maybe give him the number he’s looking for.
2. If Ford falls out of the 2nd round, Tennessee has a good shot to land him
3. Sounds like Chapman/Peebles/Bargo are all in the 7-10 round range
4. Interesting enough, said not to be completely surprised if Grimmer gets drafted and gets a high number to go pro. (Unlikely but wouldn’t be completely shocking)

I didn’t even know Grimmer was draft eligible

@taylorvol Would it make sense to remove the Portal Out players from the list?

Is the draft of the MLB network? Does YouTube stream it?
Found this on: How to Watch MLB Network Live Without Cable in 2025

“You can stream MLB Network with a live TV streaming service. No cable or satellite subscription needed. Start watching with a free trial.

You have 4 options to watch MLB Network online. You can watch with a 5-Day Free Trial of DIRECTV. You can also watch with Sling TV, Hulu Live TV, and Fubo. Unfortunately, you cannot stream MLB Network with Philo or YouTube TV.”

Just guessing but I feel pretty confident there will be YouTube Internet streams available…

Updated 7/11/25 removing MLB and portal entrants.
With 25 incoming freshman signees not included with the 28 currently on the roster, do we think that future signing classes will be smaller and rely on the portal more?

In short, yes to both. I think CTV acknowledged that the teams in Omaha were remarkably older and more experienced. According to D1 Baseball, TN had the youngest roster in SEC. With that said, proven players will be at a premium so I think he will pivot to be more portal centric. He will still recruit the top HS recruits but gone are the days of recruiting TN high school development players. They will be headed to JUCO or non P4 schools. Once they have proven themselves, TN will recruit them out of the portal.
