Rooting for SEC teams when they aren't playing Tennessee

Do you pull for other SEC football teams (when not playing UT)?

Today I was:

For Wisc
For USC
For UNC
For Southern Miss
For WVU
For La Tech
For UCLA
For Auburn
For UMass

What can I say? I'm pro Vol.

Same for me. And I'll pulling hard for Ole Miss tomorrow. I don't like them but I hate FSU.

Why is it common sense to pull for your conference? I hate all of those teams. Whether the SEC is up or down, if we win all our games or even go with one loss and an SEC title we go to the playoffs, and with bowl tie ins it doesn't matter that much for non-playoff bowls. So aside from bragging rights to other conference fans, why does it matter?

Why do you think the SEC got those tie ins? Why do you think the SEC is a P-5 conference. It has to do with winning - not one or two teams but what the conference has done as a whole historically.

If you stand at the top of not much, then you probably don't count for much. How many here have not used the argument about the winner of a conference only being the winner because of the lack of quality teams in the conference? Ever hear the frustration by teams like Memphis last year, Houston, Boise St and so on who feel like they could win it all and don't get a shot because the conference record holds them back. That's why you pull for SEC teams when they play OOC games.

A big reason to pull for the SEC. You young guys weren't around when the press and everyone in the sports world thought that the sun rose and set in the greatness of the big ten and the southwest i.e. Tx, Ok, Neb. After that seem to wear thin, came USC, and UCLA. Got very old over time. Now its the SEC. Pull for us (we UT) are part of a greater good!!!

Exactly that, and remember the old adage that every UT fan's second most favorite team was whoever was playing Notre Dame because ND was the media darling. You couldn't pick up a newspaper, and even with just three networks it seemed like ND was on TV. Sometimes historical perspective makes things so much clearer - like why UT has never had a Heisman winner, but ND had one from a losing team.

You guys do realize that when SEC teams lose to weak OOC opponents it affects our SOS don't you? That didn't matter when we had a crap team, it does now.

I also don't like taking the "SEC sucks" crap on the web, I guess that doesn't bother some people but its tiring.

SOS is real. If our opponents having losing records it's no help to us. Not sure why that's hard for people to get.

Let me ask you this. Say UF and UGA have losing records this year. Now lets say we beat all teams on our schedule except Alabama. We win and play Bama again for the SEC and win. We will go to the playoffs and will the SOS really matter that much? Also, like others have said, UF and UGA being worse helps us in recruiting.

I root against Florida but not the entire SEC. Imagine UT being dominant in the Big East. That's the world you are advocating for if you choose for the entire SEC to suck.

The flaw in your argument is that you ignore that UT gets recruits bc kids want to play in the SEC -a strong football conference that wouldn't be as such in your scenario.

SEC will always have the best athletes and most likely the best teams.

But I am not rooting for anyone but UT although I know the SEC will most likely be strong against other conferences.

News Flash: the SEC lost 6 games this weekend. Vols, Gators, Hogs, all looked like $hit against weak team.

The conference has always been topheavy, that problem may be as acute as ever.

Well, for clarity we should eliminate the word "root". Not cheering for any team outside of UT and an occasional non P5 underdog. But there's a lot to be said for maintaining a strong conference and that's dependent upon other SEC schools winning football games.

I cheer for one team and one team only and that's the Vols. I may check in on the Flames since I am an alumni but that's it. Watch the other games but could care who wins the game.

I can promise you that Alabama fans never pull for another Sec team. So, I don't pull for the SEC either! It didn't help Tennessee when the SEC was winning 7 straight NC, we were getting worse and worse! And no one in the SEC cared! We were the butt of every joke, so, you know what, I loved seeing Auburn flounder in one of the worst coaching performances I've ever seen. To Heck with Auburn, and every other team in the SEC, I'm from Tennessee!!

I can promise you most Alabama fans can't name the coach before Saban.

I want every team we play to win every game they play except against us. Strength of schedule is a real consideration in today's game and can be the one factor that screws you out of a playoff spot. If that means I have to hold my nose and hope the likes of Alabama or Georgia win, then so be it.

Anybody that claims to be all Vols should root for every other Tennessee opponent to have good seasons. The childish "I hate the other SEC teams just because they ain't Tennessee" is silly. It sounds like you'd rather Tennessee beat them and get nothing out of it other than bragging rights inside the conference. Great.

I'll gladly root for Florida, Bama, Georgia, LSU, and any other team to dominate out of conference if it means Tennessee gets a little extra bump at the end of the year.

I'm a SOUTHERN BOY.....plain and simple.....

I pull for EVERY SEC TEAM to win....when they play teams OUTSIDE of the SEC.....

I'm a VOLFAN all the way....ever since my first game in Neyland way back in '79 when we stomped Auburn....

But after that..... I like the teams who line up and play SMASH-MOUTH football without all the gimmicks...

I also will pull for the SEC champion to win the NC....

Within the SEC.....

I think Muschump is a punk
I hate UGA....dumbest fans in the SEC....
Vandy = PANSY......
KY is an afterthought.....

I hate the Gators--mainly because they've beaten us for so many years and I want them stomped back into their place beneath us.....

I have always liked LSU....all the way back to Charles Alexander and Bill Arnsparger's days as their HC....I was a Miami Dolphins fan growing up in the 70s...and Arnsparger was their DC...

And, yes, I was a Bama fan BEFORE I went to my first UT VOLS game....but ONLY because they were always on TV when there was just 3 channels...

But after attending my first game in '79....I was ALL-VOL! I can still remember listening to the radio in '79 when UT was up 17-0 on Bama in Birmingham at half-time and thought that was the year we were gonna break the streak...My favorite player was #93--Mike "STOP" Cofer...who played several years in the NFL for the Lions....

And don't expect me to apologize or be talked down from pulling for EVERY SOUTHERN TEAM as a Southern boy....I've lived up in W. Lafayette, Indiana for a while when working--and the belittlement and condescending attitude towards all things Southern up there was offensive...

To most Northerners--we're still a bunch of stupid, backwards-azz country idiots...and that's why I will NEVER pull for a team outside of our conference to beat a SEC team!!!

I can still remember the OBVIOUS media bias against any and everything from the South....and I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pull for Notre Dame or Penn State (I never liked that arrogant jerk Paterno anyway!) to win one dad-burned game!!!!

GO VOLS!! GO SEC!!

Florida and Georgia winning helps them in recruiting.

Not sure why that's hard for people to get....

Florida will always recruit well and really the absolute best we can hope to do is maybe grab 5 guys a year from FL. I don't think UF's on field success impacts our recruiting all that much.

I can assure you that's not the case. I was in the GA Dome in 2008 when Bama played Clemson; the Clemson fans were serenaded with chants of "SEC, SEC" for the last 5 minutes of the game.

All of my UF friends pull for us come OOC and bowl games. The SEC fandom amongst other fanbases in the conference is stronger than many want to perceive; that's why the rest of the country hates the SEC so bad.

This thread reminds me of how many goobers were on here last year cheering for UGA to beat Bama in Athens last season. "I ain't never going for Bama, I don't care" was very popular and very stupid last year.
